Mary Harrington has worked hard to organize the many threads of modern human decay into governing principles that are simple enough for us to all get our heads around. I'm with her on the self defeating technology principle. As a medical doctor for over 40 years, I sadly retire to see that the general health of most humans has plumited. It feels like all my efforts to help humans have been in the face of a more powerful negative trend. Infact most humans seem to be self distructive and have no empathy for others. Mary has increadible powers of insight into the collective human condition, and has the gift of english language expression for our delight. Many thanks.

Excellent point. Conspiratorial behavior shouldn't be treated as outlandish or unlikely simply on the basis that it remains opaque to outsiders.

0:51 plundered colonized an enslaved peoples is not how ‘we’ became rich . Slavery hold back the economic growth of a country because there is no pressure to improve efficiency because workers are trapped. This is detailed in Sowells analysis of why the Industrial Revolution happened in Europe not America. Humans have been slaving for all history yet this growth of material wealth happened in the last 300 years, when slavery was abolished in 1836! So for more than half of that last 300 years the world under the British empire was not slaving, it was expending resources to stop slavery. Finally, look at any post colonial country and you’ll see they are intimately better off materially post colonisation than before

Mary has built this entire intellectual shell for why she wants to be a stay at home mum. I read her book "Feminism against progress" and it was very profound and her perspective new, it was all about her. Her inability to keep a job, her feeling left out of socialization (her autism), her obsession with (biological) sex. Love Mary- just a personal experience of what she talks about around 1:19 my friends and I (grammar school girls late 90's) weren't put on the pill by our parents we took ourselves to family planning clinics and didn't even tell them. Teen magazines and sex education, then called PSHE, told us we could, so we did. We felt empowered and grown up at the time. This was in one sense our own choice but actually it also wasn't- it was just definitely the 'done thing' at the time. We never questioned the sensibility of pumping ourselves with hormones for the next 15 years or so. Most of my peers (now 40) choose non hormonal or barrier methods of contraception.

Which shows how this whole big polarization thing is bullshit. The left complains about being labelled far-left, the right complains about being labelled far-right, those words are nothing more than insults today, they serve no bigger vision of the differences in point of view or the different tendencies in society (which are nothing bad or surprising). What you are asking is : why is Mary on the side of the bad guys ? Because she thinks beyond this useless polarization of ideas. She doesn’t care being labelled a conservative, because it’s not an insult, it’s more complex than it is pictured, and it has a variety of aspects (economical, cultural, historical, anthropological…). And so does the left. I personally don’t understand how it is not natural to people to go listen to « the other side » of one’s point of view. To spontaneously take input from other standing points in society to wrap your mind around some phenomenons. It should be completely normal and sane.

I don't think those young boys hate women all that much (though I imagine some do), they just respect that the Tates have shown them that it's possible to live a life that involves adventure, risk and danger instead of being stuck in an office all day. And people who have no interest in risk/adventure/danger/etc have such a hard time understanding those who do. The issue modern humans face when encased in a fiscal system,
of 'forced' continued growth. Is population numbers.
Most entrepreneurs are bemoaning the decrease in youth population size,
of most western styled countries. With the 'disaster' of an ageing society.
"It is the defining and most important factor in society today" ...they all decry.
This is because their fiscal model must have new consumers buying,
new iterations of old products. In order to continue manufacturing limitless profit.
The US has open boarders to swell the amount of people buying stuff.
Europe would prefer the same system... their livelihood is based,
on an ever-growing, unstoppable amount of consumers.
The main issue with population size is freedom. The more there are,
the less human everyone becomes. There is no upside to this demographic.
The amount of freedom you enjoy, is directly linked to population size.
Take the food industry. Food is no longer made by 'traditional' methods.
It has been completely taken over by 'science'.
Who's main job requirement is to reduce cost.
To use a 'waste food product' instead of an expensive ingredient.
Also to keep foods shelf-life optimal, so they fill it with stuff,
from their fun box of chemicals : Fillers, Binders, Flowing agents,
anti-caking agents, carriers, artificial sweeteners, preservatives,
    colourings and emulsifiers.
This has led to all processed food being detrimental to your health.
Never... has there been less hunger in the world, but processed foods,
are causing enormous health issues with those that are now not going hungry.
Even the non-processed variety of food-stuffs is heavily treated,
with chemicals 'from seed to plant' and then frozen for years in storage facilities.
Modern food is an alien species that no ancestor of ours has ever consumed.
This is directly related to feeding so many... through the only important factor,
the continued accumulation of wealth at all costs.
It is not hyperbole to say... that all of the food you purchase at your supermarket,
is ( albeit slowly ) killing you.
In the West, the future is organised and run with fiscal growth,
as the only measure of success. There're no mandates or societal goals.
Everyone that lives in the West feels this lack of a purpose,
lack of a reason to live... except to consume.
Sanctified individual greed to maximise consumption -
Which is the only principle Western society is set up for.

Then again keeping the question broadly open like that does make it kind of hard to find an answer. Longer life spans, lower child mortality, cure for and eradication of many infectious diseases that killed millions until last century, significant lowering the number of people living under poverty line in the last 30 years. These are global indicators, not western only. These are objective non-partisan themes that suggest there is some progress in some things.

    • @ickster23
      @ickster23 6 місяців тому +1

@@andredemony I agree with all that you say. I refer to the capture of the word by one ideology. This has the effect of making ones opponent "regressive" by default. It's a brilliant play.
Another point to note is that we have made excellent progress in all those areas, so the question now concerns the desired end state for each issue when balanced against other trade offs. For example, equality of outcome. One cannot have freedom of choice and have everyone be equal in all things. Such a goal requires a Totaltarian system which severely impacts the progressive goal of increased freedom. As Sowell once said, and I paraphrase here, there are no solutions, only trade offs.
As a disclaimer, I am apolitical. I just work through these things in my mind for my own entertainment.

I enjoy Mary's broader perspective but she starts out rough in this one. From about 0:43 to 1:05 she enunciates a set of contrasts that are absurd; yes, there is still war and torture, but in absolute and relative terms they are vastly diminished. To compare without noting the global reductions in hunger, poverty, violence, and war is misleading at best. I would refer her to Ola Rosling and his family's excellent work at Gapminder foundation. Many of the statements are patent nonsense....We (the british? or the english-speaking peoples?) has been built on the backs of plundered, colonized and enslaved peoples. I'm British Canadian. My ancestors were evicted from their lands in scotland...they then practiced subsistence farming in Canada, settling in a sparsely populated part of the country..as the country developed we migrated to the cities, got a modern education and joined an industrial society. The narrator of this piece is an over-confident, strident simplifier who thinks that all of western civilization can be reduced to the plunder and oppression of others. The history is much more complex and multi-faceted. Take India for example. Explain why the Indians have chosen to retain much of which the British created there....a parliamentary, multiparty system of government...th abolition of sati and other forms of female oppression...roads and railways....hospitals....factories...telegraphs...a system of schools and colleges...a military capable of defening the country...an impartial civil service...does that fit neatly into her characterization of a society built purely on pure oppression?? Did post 1948 India demolish all these institutions? No, it kept all of them.

'Necessary Violence' is a deeply politically incorrect idea today, but as you two discussed, it was a dynamic that brought order and cemented healthy forms of gendered identity and expression. Without violence, life does tend towards a totalising femininity, which is more harmful in many respects.

If you look at it mathematically, the PERCENTAGE of humans who live in relative comfort and safety with longer lifespans is vastly higher now than it was in centuries and millenia past. There are over 8 billion of us now. Long ago when the population was a fraction of that, nearly everyone who wasn't royalty or in some way elite barely eeked out a living or lived in abject poverty, and died young. I do qualify that as at least one valid metric of progress despite some of the legitimate arguments made here about tradeoffs.

I’ve moved beyond middle age. I don’t know very many people in my generation, siblings, friends, myself, current partner, who haven’t had failed marriages and some even failed second marriages. And these failed relationships have impacted children. I don’t think the marriages of previous generations were any happier, they just were trapped in their misery by social convention.
Children need the security of healthy adult relationships to underpin their development. But the answer isn’t marriage. The answer is coherent and secure communities. The nuclear family is not protected by conservation of traditional values in a re-vamping of fusty old Victorian values, as if they ever brought us social stability and healthy lives for anyone. The solution lies in going much more radically back into what grass roots communities have always achieved by being faithful to the needs of children and adults alike in a more communal way.
I think it’s within these kinds of radically committed communities that the kinds of social pressures could operate that would allow for a more healthy relationship between the sexes. There’s a lot of thinking to be done to integrate social ethics with radically different ways of being a physical community

China has similar problems, but in each culture some of the variables are unique to that culture. Females moving to bigger cities and males at farms, both shopping in other countries if they can. Similar to passport bros in America, and UK has similar. China has a few compounding factors going on.
As far as transhumanism. 40% of men throughout history never had kids. 60%+ of young males not even dating today. Bioengineering and artificial wombs will help part of that for them. A.I. companions and robotics another part. Males might be the first/faster adapter to the tech due to statistics and things will start to change as females adapt also. The irony though is the sexual devide will grow. With luck A.I. might be able to help match people in interests and such. Genetic engineering helping to create desired qualities. Though a lot of the technology will only be available to the rich and upper classes. And the disaffected lower class or throw away population will still be stuck at the bottom. Upward mobility has shrunk.
As far as population decline and replacement. Hypergomy is not 100%. It looks like infertility rates may bottom out around 20% from what I am guessing looking at statistics. But to that and what is being selected for looks like 2 main types to me. Population will not totally crash unless a E.L.E. happens. But I think humanity may be seeing a bottle neck ( gene pool )event soon. Again just my guess. Multiple countries have population and birth rate problems. The silent crisises going on with parts compounding.
As far as social media and social imprinting with toys. Females or more specific female products out spend males 10 to 1. So the change in female toys due to female likes is driven by female statistics. Social media rotting brains and forming narcissist and such. Feeding ego silos and creating or strengthening biases. Dopamine and ego traps. Manipulation and delusions Feeding naritaves. It doesn't look good what social media and things like hookup culture have done to people.

Bring a country out of the dark ages, lifting poverty like in say China and investments there, or colonialism and all the felt draconianism.
