Terrific interview. I was fascinated from start to finish. Looking forward to seeing Donn and Ted. How about getting Al Van Halen and Mike Anthony to join? Is that too big of a dream?
How about DLR….. maybe not, no one else would get a chance to talk.😄
There are no words to describe Lee's importance to the music world. He's a superb bass player!
Lee Sklar is a living legend! Tremendous talent and extremely humble! 🎸
Also, Sunset Sound RULES!!! 🎹
I'm a drummer, but Lee Sklar's posts I watch every day...Very inspiring.
same...love the drum nuggets...
Leland... You're the best!
What a bastion of history in both Leland Sklar and Sunset Sound Recorders thank you all. ☮
This was fun!
@@slipperynoodle20
The detail Leland provided was outstanding; I enjoyed the what Leland ssid about fret wires ☮
Lee's youtube channel helped me get through the pandemic years. It was intimate and educational, and I felt like it was just "us" sitting and listening. Sunset Sound Roundtable feels the same way. I love extended interviews and music history. I grew up within the heyday of this legendary studio. I'd rather be in a studio than stage. Magical!
💜🙏
It always seems to be rags to riches somehow everyone seems to pull it off if they love the music thanks so much for my like it means a lot to me
You mean the fake pandemic, right the plan Demic
Lee is such a great bass player and a great guy.. The more I listen to him the more I appreciate him.
Cant wait! What a great guy! Met him two times. Most humble person i’ve ever met! Even with his resume!
Humble?
Living legend who absolutely tells it like it is and is just a wonderful storyteller who i could listen to all day..such an interesting guy❤
I could listen to 12 more hours of Lee talking shop. Thanks for this SSR!
Our pleasure!
Lee Sklar is a great antidepressant, take liberally!@@rickbroderick9146
That is easy. Look up his channel! He posts daily.
What a great interview Drew! Lee has one of my favorite UA-cam channels and I watch him a lot. Lee should do a book on all of the records he has played on. Or at least most of them. His knowledge of the music world is absolutly a treasure to listen to. Andy Griffith…..
.
I could listen to him talk all day. He is a musical treasure
Thank you for documenting this very important piece of history. The value of this series is immeasurable. Lee is just incredible and an amazing historian for that golden era of music. You are doing the world a great service. Excelsior!
Endless respect for Lee and what he has done in the music world......
Lee is total class.
LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND Leland Sklar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
20:41
He just said the essence of how I feel about every music I listen to❤️🔥
James Taylor had such a knack for good tunes that Touch listeners. one of the very superlative singer/ songwriters ever.
Two and a half hours with Lee Sklar? I'm perfectly happy to hear this history of my lifetime which deserves to be remembered.
100% in agreement with Lee - today's music experience is a phone and earbuds. Many young people have never heard ANY stereo system, much less a studio monitor
The King of Bass 🔊 😊
Stevie never stops
Lee is a badass mofo!!! Such an inspiration, huge influence on me. Never underestimate the power of the bass. Get the book folks! Good sir, I give you "the finger"!
Thank you for doing these interviews...I am overjoyed to be able to listen in on the storytelling of the legends that have graced that studio...
YESSSSSSS!!!!!❤❤
MGM Recording Studio (big room) was the best sounding studio I've ever been in. So sad when it closed (Cherokee). So many great LA studios gone forever.
What an amazing interview session!
Given the chronology, the Brian Hyland recording would likely be “Gypsy Woman” that Leland played on. Love Leland’s UA-cam channel.
Leland sklar is the greatest of the great bass players. I would love ro jam with him.
Leland was so right on the money about the micromanaging of “modern production” in the music industry.
He truly is a musician’s musician and a great storyteller
EPIC INTERVIEW!!! BEST LEE ONE EVER!
Obviously, by my UA-cam name, I'm of Irish descent, lol. A little bit of German and French, too. However, I'm like an alligator! I'm from Wisconsin, but moved here to Florida 23 years ago. Great interview. Thanks!
Lee has an amazing ability to remember details so clearly as to be unquestionable. Maybe the clean living over the years or whatever, his story telling is priceless. Articulate, humorous, real, and he's also a passable musician.
The best present is the presence. Like most people, over my many years of existence there are the songs that trigger memories so clear as to be almost transcendent. The same goes for scents. Triggers, weird.
Great interview, thanks.
I know!!!! So good hearing the music u just made back in there ❤
Yes - get Ted Templeman and Donn Landee on here! That would be so amazing! Love the interview with Lee Sklar. What a great musician and human being.
Not stopping till Landee and Templeman
@@Roundtablewithdrew Can hardly wait until you pull that off!
@@Roundtablewithdrewted be great when it happens 👍🏼
Montrose, Van Halen, of course before VH he was producing all those great early Doobie Brothers albums, Little Feat the classic sailing shoes.
Thanks for this! I love Lee’s personality as much as his playing.
Great interview 10/10!
Lee Sklar is so talented as a musician. He is also such a mellow dude and seems so kind and humble.
The secret to success.
Oh my! Pure gold!!
All "Legends"!
Wonderful interview Thank you. Happy New Year. ❤
I was 18 the first time I ever recorded in a studio. Although I never stuck with music as a career path, I recorded, worked and hung out in studios that now live on only in memories. Heart's first two albums, Steve Miller's Fly Like an Eagle in Kaye-Smith studios (gone) and all the early Northwest sound albums from he Sonics, the the Wailers, the Kingsmen, and so many more that came out of Audio Recordings, or Wylie/Griffith (both long gone). I can only imagine having recorded in or been a part of all those LA Studios.
Downloaded this fabulous interview. Thank you both so so much. My mind was trying to picture all these people
I posted before I saw Leeland's book. I'm trying to find it now.
What an outstanding interview. Lee Sklar is not only a legend, he is the reason (IMO) that bassists in the industry are respected to the degree they are. At 77 years old Lee works like 20 year old. May GOD bless you and I pray you will have many more years of enjoyment and success.
Love me some Lee Sklar. Best bass player ever! This channel rocks!
The awesome thing I love about Lee is the fact that he’s played on all of these albums with all of the most popular artists for all of this time and he is the most down-to-earth guy you could ever meet. Like he’s never done any of that stuff. Very few Musicians at his level. Keep the kid inside and the excitement alive like he does. Drew, as I always tell you, thank you. I always over emphasize how important it is to document the experiences and the knowledge from all of these great musicians from over the years who’ve been through analog and digital, and understand the business the way they do.
What you do, to me, is one of the most significant historical documentations of music that has ever been done.
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year.
Again, thank you for the wonderful series!
You can tell during Leland's you tube videos when hes playing or grooving with his eyes closed, that he is transported to those places, studios , live shows...and wherever he was...it inspires the listeners to tap in and imagine it all with him. Its like walking into a good friends warm kitchen , a warm cozy feeling , he us so gracious and down to earth. After seeing the Immediate Family movie twice , once in Woodstock and once in Maui, everytime i hear a classic song , i am literally stopped in my tracks now to listen to the intricacies and the magic mix of the musicianship .....wonderful to see the inside of sunset sound studios...and to hear the history. Music medicine 💜 🎵
There is something special about a good studio. As soon as you walk in and unpack your instrument, you are twice as good at playing. There is something in the environment that does that. I don't know if I'm wrong, but I got that feeling. Don't know if it applies to Lee Sklar.. then he would be ridiculously good. Wonderful interview that you get to take a little at a time. It is long.
⭐️💜🤘
"They want me to sound like I just went to a pawn shop and bought a bass."--LOL!!!! Sklar wit and humor is the best, second only to the great bass playing. Well done, sir. Saw you in Sun Valley with Lyle Lovett. Great show.
And Carol is the Queen of Bass 🔊
Some kid 100 years from now will be inspired from watching this video. #Legend. Thank you for sharing Leland. 🙂
I've heard that sounds are what emotions sound like, no place more than with music. Outstanding interview, thank you.
Yes! Everyone loves Lee!!!!!
Can’t wait to see a Don & Ted interview. I’ll never forget my mom turned me on to Wolfman Jack. I remember when she told me his name was Robert Smith. As a little kid I thought that was so cool lol
Love Leland! So talented!! Great interviews. Such great stories. Thank you!❤🇨🇦✌️
Yep, Lee has a stellar memory, and he is so much fun to listen to. Thanks, Leland.😀🌻
Great Stories. What a perfect memory he has!! After that many sessions, he still remembers things like it was yesterday. Thank you ....
I love hearing Leeland talk.
Thank you both. What a wonderful service to create and share this conversation. Let’s please become close personal friends, though I will settle for distant showbiz friends if necessary.
Nice. Ive been waiting on this. I know what im doing for the next 3 hrs!! Go Time!!
He is an absolute national treasure. Great interview.
The Ghosts of the past haunt the place! Leland Sklar is magic and is so damned humble it just amazing!
I mean if I successfully screw in a lightbulb my head swells beyond measure yet Leland has no such reaction to being the stud bass player of the universe!
Regarding the bit at 42:40: On the original recording of "Sealed with a kiss" by Brian Hyland in 1962 there was no Russ and no Leland (who was only 15 at that time). It was Mundell Lowe and Al Caiola on guitar, Gary Geld on piano, George Duvivier on bass, Blackie Shackner on harmonica, Gary Chester on drums, and Sticks Evans and Al Rogers on percussion. Producers were the authors/composers Gary Geld and Peter Udell. Del Shannon had its own hits at that time. Did Lee speak of another recording session?
#TheMan #TheMyth #TheLEGEND!! He is definitely IRREPLACEABLE!! His music is weaved into the fabric of our lives!! 🖕🏼
Interviewer was excellent...REAL...not trying to get Likes for himself...lost art friend, well done...Lee is as down to earth as it gets...must get to his wisdom and that requires wisdom.
Man Leland is so right on about music being triggers. Some things come on and it just transports you to another time and place...💯
Yet another great interview! Lee is perfect for this stuff with his long list of recording credits.
What Lee says at 48:17 is something that should be played over and over for the many "artists" that wound up with a hit because of what the session guys brought to the track. So much of what those studio cats did was the stuff that made hit records. These were cases where some hits would NOT have become hits if it wasn't for the song ideas session players contributed. You'd think the decent thing to do was even a small percentage point for such contributions.
This conversation was sublime
Great interview! I grew up in LA, still have good memories of it. But in ‘97 I had to get away to the mountains of Colorado. My nearest neighbor is 1/2 a mile away. I miss the music scene but I love the open space here and there’s no freeway anywhere near me.
I started watching this video with the intention of just hanging around for 5 minutes. I’m still watching 2 hours later.
Awesome interview and visit
I took my time---4 days---to watch this through, mainly because I didn't want it to end. I've been subbed to Lee's channel for quite a while now, he really and truly shines in this format. What a hand! Whadda guy! Certainly a part of my 1960s through now. Thanks a million, Don.
🙏
Doesn’t that make you wonder about deeper stuff? When you see, hear, smell, taste something and you’re transported somewhere.
I’m just in the airport in Newark, NJ returning from the funeral of a lifelong friend who was killed in a hit & run accident.
So much of what you and Lee describe has happened to me over the last week.
I’m sorry. 🙏
There’s certainly a lot of history attached to Sunset Sound and Leland Sklar is the consummate interviewee so this was an engaging video albeit very long!
Regarding Jaco, he rewrote the book of Bass Guitar so it’s natural for a student of Bass to study and copy his techniques as well as studying Lee Sklar and Carol Kaye!
Love Leland's observation around 22:00 about the opening of the memory channels when listening to the music of your life. Research scientists on dementia have confirmed the same theory with studies. He's a musical genius, inspired greatly by Sir Paul's innovative compositions on the bass guitar in The Beatles.
Praise be to Leland, got me thru lockdown and won my admiration 50+ years ago, when i pledged my life to the cause of transcendent musical expression. 5150, maybe… here for it
Priceless 🙂
Love the shot of both giving the bird
That's rock n roll baby!
Proper, thankful gentleman. Font of wisdom.
I call Lee Sklar The Wizard. ❤ At the one hour mark, he's so right about losing that thang-that magic from the fresh approach- that initial attempt.
Brilliant . Riveting and entertaining .
Great interview. Such great stories and so relatable. I listen to Leland's UA-cam page, it's really easy-going a little talk a little music (cut's/songs/tracks he did bass on). I also believe that that pic of the cover on Time Magazine with James Taylor was the art of Peter Max. Hearing about Boss Scaggs, Joni, David Crosby, Joan Baez, Dino Palladino, The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl, everything. This was great, thank you both!
I dont know about you guys but I think Lee Sklar is just the coolest guy ever. I love his youtube channel! @SunsetSound I love the mic's you pull out for these little interviews!
What a wonderful interview Mr Sklar . When you were reminiscing about your incredible career ...I was there with you almost ,you were so vivid in your description of the times gone by . Amazing ! Regarding the rehearsals , what was it Jackie Gleason' ( The Great One ) said about rehearsing ? There's no point going over what you already know ! He despised rehearsals ... it did not do him any harm ,whatsoever . Take good care .
🙏🙏
Thank you.
This channel is sooooooo good!!!
What an amazing interview, thank you for sharing with us!
Not just a great player, but a really genuine, kind person.
WoW. Great interview. Loved every minute of it.
Lee is my favorite bass player. Also a very cool guy.
Great stuff Drew. Love your work, Kere.
this is a treasure!
I am beginning to LIVE for these mini-docs. What a channel!!
Fantastic video with Lee who is a true legend and a great guy as well. I am so happy that you are doing these interviews as well as keeping the legacy of Sunset Sound going for future generations, thank you.
Like many others, for nearly 4 years I've spent time with Lee nearly every day plus Clubhouse hours. You were able to draw out fresh stories and memories. So, good on you, Drew. I'll be spending more time on this channel, too.
Inspiration! Lee, Drew, this channel, the studio!
🙏
These are the times of our life.
All that knowledge and personal experiences that Mr Sklar has is incredible. Great interview. Ty.
the thumbnail of this video is so epic 😂😂thanks you two for sharing your stories with us 👍
Everyone thinks we’re just being assholes. It’s for the book!!
Have been hoping you'd get Lee on. Wonderful conversation. Thank you. Best wishes from England.
