  • Welcome to a sensational new episode of The Kenny Aronoff Sessions, where this week our host sits down for a chat with fellow legendary musician, internationally renowned bass player, Leland (Lee) Sklar. With a career spanning over five awe-inspiring decades, Lee has solidified his position as one of the most accomplished and most heavily in-demand bass players in history, and his extensive discography and collaborations with iconic artists such as Phil Collins, James Taylor, and Lyle Lovett are a testament to his unparalleled talent. Today, he and Kenny review his extraordinary personal and professional journey, and explore his unique approach to music, his unwavering dedication, and his practice of maintaining a positive attitude and strong work ethic in the industry.
Together, they emphasize the importance of hard work, self-discipline, and perseverance - qualities that have propelled them both to the top - and highlight the significance of continuous growth, self-validation, and the unwavering commitment to deliver their absolute best in every performance. Lee goes on to recount his work with Phil Collins, underscoring his exceptional talent, versatility, and artistry as a drummer, singer, and songwriter. The commitment that he shares with Kenny to adapt to changes in the industry as a strategy to ensure success is also examined, and Lee even reveals what may be lingering in his iconic beard!. "I really try to maintain an enthusiasm during the course of the project - a certain amount of levity and joking around and stuff to keep the atmosphere light."
"You have two options… you can say 'Yes' or you can say 'No'. And if you say 'Yes', it comes with an obligation and you show up and you give the best you can give."
"Your life is like all these roads that suddenly splay out and there's different roads and you hope that you're following the right path that day, but none of them necessarily are wrong.”
"I don't care if I get called for hip-hop or anything. You go in, you make your ears available to all of this."
"I'll never be as great as I want to be, but I'm willing to spend my entire life trying to be as great as I can be.”
"The first audience deserves as good a show as the last audience."
"If you do something and you've proven over and over again, if you just do what you're feeling, you will get results."

I’ll never understand why today’s artist don’t learn from guys like Kenny, Leland, Luke, etc. These cats know how to get it done. They practice their art. They go in…collaborate, contribute, learn and apply it, and keep learning and practicing. They are a true gift to the music world. Sadly, guys like these are so rare. Blessed to have met them both. Amazing artists and such humble people. Thanks for sharing Kenny.

Aside from being a great drummer, I remember watching an instruction video you had (even though I'm not a drummer) some years back and I also think you are a gifted teacher.

Listening to Lee is a master class on how to be a professional. He is totally committed to all aspects of the job.. the music part.. the hang.. providing input but accepting what the producer and artist wants. And I understand he is not a druggy or alcoholic which I find might be difficult at times dealing with some of the other musicians. Drummer Louis Bellson is another musician I understand lived a dedicated clean life and who was respected for being a professional.

On thing about Kenny that's apparent and beautiful, still on his latest (Irsay, Bukavoc band) work I've heard here, is the gravitas of his left hand on the snare. "Just right" from song to different song, deep with all the atmosphere inherent in each song. There's an energy around each note that sounds magical - artistry at the highest level. Thx Kenny!!

The first 7 minutes of this reminds me of why I not only have unlimited respect for you as a craftsman but truly dig your vibe. By the way, I am including the first 3 minutes of Ken rattling off your unprecedented credits.

So interesting. You both have fascinating life’s. Many can learn from your experiences, good work ethics and not being afraid to go outside one’s comfort zone. I have never been in the music industry but had a great career along with adapting to many changes along the way.

Two amazing musicians and gentlemen! Kenny I knew your Uncle (I believe that's right) when I lived in Bloomington. Also lived on the same lake as John did. Kudos!

Hi Kenny! What a great interview. I had the pleasure of sharing drumming duties with you on a Drive She Said project back in 2015-16 :) . All the best.

Great convo. That list is amazing. I suppose in that business being reliable and always rearing to go with all your ducks in a row is a huge part of success and having such an impressive history. And Lee strikes me as having that kind of work ethic and dependability to where the guys hiring are like yeah, call him up.
