- This was definitely a "Dear Diary" day, for local angler Michael. There are many many learning points in this video, but the one that I'd like to point out is the most obvious and the simplest one, the one that every ghillie will tell you. "No matter how disturbed a pool gets during the playing of a fish, once that fish is landed, the very next cast to be made is directly into the exact same spot in which the first fish was hooked.". Such was the case here. After playing and landing an 18lb hen fish, the angler makes a cast into the same spot that he hooked the first fish. You can see me videoing that fish from above the net in which it had recovered. If you listen carefully you can hear the 16lb cock fish taking the fly and the angler's reel alerting me to that fact! The opening scene contains images of the fly that caught both of these salmon and many many others throughout the past three seasons. My advice to anyone intending to fish the Ness in the future, is to give one of those flies a try - spring, summer and back end......... Incidentally, Michael was not meant to be fishing at Dochfour that day but an invitation to fish from another angler was received and accepted. So, in the future, if you get the opportunity to go fishing, my advice would be to grab it with both hands, especially if it's to go fishing on the Scottish Highland River Ness, in July, where summer fish run big! Happy happy days :)
Waw!!!! Two beautiful clunkers. A pair of lovely salmon. They must have been swimming together. A red-letter day for sure for Michael. and once again as fresh as paint. Well done. I have a photograph of the old gillie on the river Garry with four beautiful salmon he caught in one day, 18lb. 24lb. 28lb and a 32lb. wish I could show you it, It's a lovely picture.
Cheers Brian, I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been told that the Garry produced the biggest of all the fish on the Ness system. Funnily enough, there was a 32.5lber caught this season not far from there, so the genetics are still there. One of my anglers played a huge fish this season for 8 minutes and 30 seconds before the hook came out. We both saw it and it was way over 30lb and more likely around 40lb. Maybe next year!!

That’s a bucket list trip for me to fish over there. I live in Newfoundland and we get amazing fun’s of Atlantic salmon. Here we are given tags with our licence that allows us to keep some grilts. Is it all hook and release in that area
Hey Glen, thanks very much for your comments. In Scotland we have a grading system that reflects the health of the river and the number of adult salmon that return to it each year. The river Ness is a grade 1 river which means we are legally entitled to catch and kill salmon if we wish. Generally that fish would be a male Grilse under 8lb. At Dochfour, the owner has asked anglers to return all fish landed and no one has objected to that request. So despite the fact that anglers are entitled to take a fish, they have agreed to return them all. Do you catch Atlantics on bombers or other floating flies at all?

Couldn’t agree more Andrew. Our season ended on 15/10, I’m only just catching up with the videos now and there’s a few more to go. We had a very good season and from opening day up until September, everything is straight from the sea. Then with the volume of water contained in Loch Ness, we are never too short of water. How has your season gone and what was your most successful pattern?
@@CameronChapman good stuff Cameron and sounds like you had a good season, and you’re lucky being Loch fed as it compensates from the mercy of the weather! 😄🎣👍. Season wasn’t too bad considering the drought we had for long periods. Calvin’s and Rose Shrimp my best patterns, great for our mostly peaty spate rivers. Looks forward to seeing your future vids 😄👍👍
Spot on @@AndrewMcGall we’re extremely fortunate to be Loch fed by such a large body of water. Sounds like you did well in difficult conditions. The secret to success on the Ness, is to dress your flies very sparsely, as the water is very clear. All patterns work well but the most effective flies are sparsely tied 🙏🏼❤️👍🏼

Thanks for your kind comments, they are much appreciated. It’s a classic case of an angler who dresses his own flies, right down to dyeing his own feathers I’m afraid. The barred Cree feather you mention was dyed ‘chartreuse’ and you can see the green accents in the body material, to match. A deadly pattern on the Ness, at the end of that angler’s fly line, for sure! I hope that all makes sense.

No he doesn’t Dug but he does very very well. If I did own the beat, I’d definitely be paying him but unfortunately, I don’t.
