The first time I heard/seen Richard Pryor sing, I was blown away. Til this day, I am still blown away. This MAN had such incredible talent...I just wonder if he felt he did all could do to express himself the way he needed to. This is such a great performance!!!😀
My goodness, what a voice he had, the man could sing, so if he had not made it in comedy and acting, he could have killed it in music and what else?!!! He was not one-dimensional; he was well-rounded; wow!
I didn't expect for him to sing like THAT. I thought it was going to be like a mediocre sounding, singing voice. Rich pulling out the extra "RICH" qualities in Richard. His voice was powerful and phenomenal. A diverse talent indeed. R.I.P. Richard Pryor.
This is awesome. I love Richard Pryor. I bought his comedy albums when I was too young to listen to them and had memorized them and performed for my friends. I was 13. I wish Richard were still here. 😇💜 RIP
I knew he could sing from his toned down rendition of “There’s No Business Like Show Business” from the end of his classic 1977 special. But THIS is something else.
I had know idea that this, talented man could could sing , let alone like that. I never heard any one mention that he could. I guess that's where his daughter gets her voice from. WOW
I remember going to Cafe Wha a basement bar in the Village in NYC they have all his photos up he started singing his first gigs there before comedy amazing.
I've seen this clip a few years ago on YT. Was a game show I think where celebs could do other things they weren't known for like sing , stand up etc. that he did this song for. Richard Pryor actually started out his career as a comedian/singer/entertainer in the clubs in Peoria IL but was told he didn't sing well so he stayed with the jokes. He talked about it too in a biography. If he didn't chain smoke & wasn't told no I think he could've done both sing & jokes. His singing was really good!
Not surprised, many comedians can sing because they have such great vocal range and control. Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey, Seth McFarland, Kevin Murphy from MST3K, Ricky Gervais, Maya Rudolph...
In western society that would make him your grand-uncle but in large parts of Africa where I’m from, he would still be classified as your Grand-father. Even your dad’s older brother would get the classification of grand-father (big daddy when directly translated) and your dad’s younger brother your “small father.” Never mind me, I like sharing trival information 👀
Woooow!!!! Thank you for this! I'm blown away by this! A TALENTED Brotha he was!! I'm glad that I got at least on chance to see him before he transitioned. He was getting a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame. That was a really nice star studded turn out. Debbie Allen (and her well known singer side piece), Whoopie ( hater of light skinned Black men ) Goldberg, Ms Arsenio Hall, Rain Pryor & super model Veronica Webb, Louis Gossett Jr, and the list goes on and on! Well loved man even to this day! Rest in Power, Brotha Richard! ❤🖤💚
Truth be told, if you research Pryor's early days on the comedy circuit, this performance shouldn't be too much of a surprise. He did spend some time performing at the Cafe Wha?, a famous Greenwich Village club that also hosted a young Jimi Hendrix. I'm sure being surrounded by some great talent stoked those passionate flames in Pryor. JO JO DANCER, YOU'RE LIFE IS CALLING is another great peak into his storied career!
@@djtrakakadrunkpoet8598 Another surprise well for some was him saying he was gay for a week. But wife tolerated his being bi, but couldn't compete with freebasing.
Wow I've always been a fan of Richard Pryor since the seventies I didn't know anything like this thanks for posting it. Also what do you get all of these videos Man you have the best collection of black history I've ever seen.
The jazz phrasing and the power. Damn.
This man could have had a solid music career. I am genuinely SHOCKED.

Yes, why? Why did he hide his light under a bushel?
They say all comedians want to be singers.
But Richard Pryor WAS a singer!

Wow 😳 I didn't know he could sing. He sounds great. If only Berry Gordy of Motown would hire him.
I'm sure Berry knew Richard could sing, but for some reason, he was just interested in him as an actor.
@@monilaninetynine3811 I dig that.
He was in The Wiz movie idk why they didn’t have him sing his part in the movie since in the Broadway play the wiz sings
Being hired as a singer by Berry Gordy didn't work out well for everyone
WOW

Incredible! I wish he had included singing in his comedy!
I love listening to this again and again. The smooth smooth beginning. Didn't have a friend no place to go is just so perfect.
