Patrick Ewing was never on a team I liked but that doesn't mean I will ever have any dislike for him. He was a force to be reckoned with in an era overflowing with talent.

I'm a HUUUGE Celtics/Bird fan, and I was a young kid growing up during that era. But, Patrick Ewing also grew up around that same period (Cambridge Rindge & Latin HS), and Ewing was a HUUUUUUGE legend then, because as great a career as he had as a pro, the hype surrounding Ewing prior to going to Georgetown was even greater. Back then they had a tournament called "The Boston Shootout" and one of the times the Cambridge squad came and played at the Arlington Boys & Girls club court against the Boston Titans, and it was like Elvis had walked into the gym.
+donmegace Yeah it was something. Those R&L teams were stacked, as they featured top teammates like Ladon Adair, who went on to play starting PG for UConn. They were treated like rock stars, and when Ewing entered the bball court (Arlington Boys Club), he was the only guy who had to duck to enter the doorway to the gym. I had a cousin that was in Ewing's grade in HS, and the combination of Ewing's height, his Jamaican accent, and his being black exposed him to a lot of ridicule, which caused him to develop a hardened attitude for anything Boston, which is sad. I'm not a fan of all the race-baiting out there nowadays, but back in the mid 70s-to-early 80s, most of Pat went through was legit. The irony is it was the (unlikely) friendship between Pat and Larry Bird developed MANY years later that has helped Ewing get past what he went through growing up in Cambridge/Boston, and that's cool to see, because Pat's a good dude :)
Mike S Thanks for the thorough explanation! I am Jamaican so I felt an automatic connection to Pat Ewing. I had heard about the abuse that he endured in various high school gyms but I didn't know how bad it was. Neither did I know that he resented all things Boston as a result. It's cool that he and Larry Bird became friends :) I always remembered Ewing's tough game face when he played for the Knicks. But I also heard that he was a really cool guy off the court.

Reports said that they clicked so well that they were often inseparable while there (hanging out together on the sidelines, in the locker room, going out to dinner together, etc.). Even during the ceremony receiving their gold medals, you'll see Pat and Larry standing next to one another. Whatever the reasons, I'm glad it happened, and especially glad it was therapeutic for Pat. God works in mysterious ways! Peace :)
People forget that Larry Legend was 6'91/2", is one of then greatest shooters of all-time, one of the greatest passers ever, and one of the best rebounding fowards ever. No wonder he talked so much trash cause he could back it up! 💯💪

Shiz ,he did in his era, very underrated. He wasn't as strong as shaq, but was better than him on 90% of basketball, and ball i.q. He was the 1st rim protector since wilt. That was long time. He made more guys change their shot than any. He had jumper, real hook, good footwork, defense, passing, ball handling, free throws, he had kobe, are Jordan, he wins lots of championships. He has bird, unstoppable.
You listen to everyone who played with or against Bird and they will tell you how great he was and how much trash he talked. And they will tell you he backed up all his trash-talking, too.

Most former Bird opponents have good things to say about him because he was genuine. If you could ball, he wanted to play against you to see if he could beat you. Seems like most of the guys from the '80's and '90's came out as good folk. They respected each other, not ALL ABOUT ME!!!! Just a different era, I guess.

The beauty of youtube is that you don't have to rely on "back in the day" stories when legends are mentioned...just go and watch Bird's games from his prime Celtics days of '79 - '85 before his back problems. No one could stop Bird. The Bad Boy Pistons were pure defense and still Bird with his bad back destroyed them with 27 ppg in the '87 ECF, even with Hall of Fame defensive guy Rodman draped all over him.
gullyroad I’m a Celtics fan, and I will absolutely give the Pistons their respect. They were tough as nails. However, I think time, injuries and the death of Lenny Bias are what derailed the Celtics more than anything. Had Bird and McHale remained healthy, and had Lenny Bias been there, I think the Celtics win at least two more titles.

Bird has a great story about how dirty Laimbeer (yep surprise surprise) played. Apparently when defending someone, Laimbeer would slide his foot under his opponent's foot when they jumped for a shot. They would land awkwardly with a strong possibility of twisting an ankle or worse. Allegedly he did this to Robert Parrish on more than one occasion. Bird went on to say that Laimbeer tried it on Bird once and when Bird did it back to him, Laimbeer never did it to Bird again. Kinda funny...
They really attributed Larrys 'lack of hops' because he didn't fly like a Dr. J. It was just never Larry's game to incorporate athleticism because he wasn't like a Dr.J.

Many others probably talked trash because they were getting frustrated. Larry was doing it to get you frustrated. IMO He said that telling people where he was going, he was getting the ball & what he was going to do. That gave him a rush & was the dagger in the heart for players. He got a rush off of it. Especially in clutch situations. And statistically, it made sense too.

They have another 4star kid starting at 1. Mac is an undersized 2 guard. But he's strong as hell for his height. If he stays for 3+ years and stays in that weight room he's gonna be a PROBLEM for opponents and may lead the NCAA in scoring at some point. The charge that Bird couldn't jump is silly. The guy was 6'-9." Standing with his arms outstretched he could almost reach the rim. Yeah, there are guys who can jump up and touch the top of the backboard, but what good is that? Most rebounds don't go nearly that high. Bird was as quick jumping and getting to the ball as anyone, and if you don't believe me, check out his rebound totals. He regularly achieved triple doubles on a team with guys like Walton, Parrish and McHale. He also had the uncanny ability to sense which direction the ball was going to rebound. It was like he knew when his shots were going in and when they were not. When they were not, he often knew where to be when the ball rebounded. In general, he was one of the most instinctive players who ever played along with Oscar Robertson, Magic Johnson and Jerry West. Add to that, his passing game was as good as there ever was.
I remember Patrick Ewing as a freshman at Cambridge Ridge and Latin High School. He wasn't filled out but even then you could see he was he was destined for great things. His high school. and mine North Quincy played the most exciting basketball game I ever witnessed. Patrick was coached by Mike Jarvis. Patrick's team won by one point with no time left on a beautiful shot by their guard I believe Kevin Moore. Only the 1981 ECF Celts vs Sixers game7 and Patrick playing for Georgetown lost a heartbreaker to North Carolina in NCAA FInals rabk anywhere near that high school game.
John Lothrop I first heard of him after reading a feature about him in Esquire during his senior year at Ringe and Latin. I was aged 10-11 and my dad had a subscription then. Fast forward to the 1981-82 school year and I found a Georgetown game on the telly and remembered him from the Esquire article. Was hooked on Hoyas for the rest of the decade.
John Lothrop I was able to meet Pat when I was 12 in San Diego when he was practicing with the dream team before going to Barcelona. He was my favorite basketball player at the time I came up to him in the lobby of his hotel to ask him for an autograph he was a total asshole about it. After that day I stopped watching basketball and became an mma fan instead.....

Well I wouldn't call the Bad Boy Pistons "pure" defense. They played dirty as hell, clotheslining people and so forth.

Actually Larry was a descent jumper , most people just remember him towards the end of his career when he had severe back and ankle problems

They have another 4star kid starting at 1. Mac is an undersized 2 guard. But he's strong as hell for his height. If he stays for 3+ years and stays in that weight room he's gonna be a PROBLEM for opponents and may lead the NCAA in scoring at some point. He played a lot like Russ on the offensive end in high school

The charge that Bird couldn't jump is silly. The guy was 6'-9." Standing with his arms outstretched he could almost reach the rim. Yeah, there are guys who can jump up and touch the top of the backboard, but what good is that? Most rebounds don't go nearly that high. Bird was as quick jumping and getting to the ball as anyone, and if you don't believe me, check out his rebound totals. He regularly achieved triple doubles on a team with guys like Walton, Parrish and McHale. He also had the uncanny ability to sense which direction the ball was going to rebound. It was like he knew when his shots were going in and when they were not. When they were not, he often knew where to be when the ball rebounded. In general, he was one of the most instinctive players who ever played along with Oscar Robertson, Magic Johnson and Jerry West. Add to that, his passing game was as good as there ever was.

I remember Patrick Ewing as a freshman at Cambridge Ridge and Latin High School. He wasn't filled out but even then you could see he was he was destined for great things. His high school. and mine North Quincy played the most exciting basketball game I ever witnessed. Patrick was coached by Mike Jarvis. Patrick's team won by one point with no time left on a beautiful shot by their guard I believe Kevin Moore. Only the 1981 ECF Celts vs Sixers game7 and Patrick playing for Georgetown lost a heartbreaker to North Carolina in NCAA FInals rabk anywhere near that high school game.

Fast forward to the 1981-82 school year and I found a Georgetown game on the telly and remembered him from the Esquire article. Was hooked on Hoyas for the rest of the decade.
John Lothrop I was able to meet Pat when I was 12 in San Diego when he was practicing with the dream team before going to Barcelona. He was my favorite basketball player at the time I came up to him in the lobby of his hotel to ask him for an autograph he was a total asshole about it. After that day I stopped watching basketball and became an mma fan instead.....
