I'm a Knicks fan, but lived in Boston for my college years and a couple thereafter when Larry came to town. He's made some of the most incredible plays I've ever seen. His passing vision was unbelievable.
As a Bostonian did you know Bird mangled his finger in the 84-85 season just before the playoffs? He was at Chelsea’s bar on Merchant’s Row right off of State St. He was there with his drinking buddy Quinn Buckner when he got into a bar fight with a patron. Analysts looking at Bird’s shooting stats showed he was markedly a poorer shooter than prior to the fight. This means we probably would have won the 84-85 season and further ore that would have been a three-peat. 84,85 and 86. If you lookup this fight it was settled out of court and to this day remains sealed as far as ai know. It may have been O’Shaunessy (spelling) that wrote the article. So somewhere out there is a guy that caused us back to back Championships. Injuring what may have been one of the top three players of all time.

Larry Legend. It's amazing that those Celtics "only" won 3 NBA titles. But think about their competition: the early 80s Dr-J Sixers, the late 80s Isaiah Thomas Pistons, the Magic-lead Lakers, and the early 90s Bulls with the greatest ever. The 80s and early 90s was the NBA's golden age.
Bird soared when the NBA became a full fledged major professional sports league. Three titles for his team is an astounding feat. And he could rebound. I joined the fan club when I noticed ed his skill at defensive rebounding. He ended offensive possessions for the opposition. And then he might pop a three pointer at the other end after dribbling the ball upper. He's one of the greatest athletes all time among all English-speaking. Said another way he's among a large number of American athletes without a peer in any athletic part-time among the English, Irish or Scottish.
Bird was pretty broken down by the time the Pistons emerged with a very energetic team. Up through 87 though, the Pistons always got schooled by Boston. All dynasties end.

I was at the Trailblazer game where he hit that "famous game winner"...I will never forget that...The shot went up and was too young and short to witness it firsthand...The "old " Garden went absolutely Nutzo...it was so Insane!!!! walking down the streets of Boston, I remember families chattering to their young about the "moment...like,," hey,,"that was Larry Bird,,"best ever!..Stuff like that...It was so incredible...He made that shot from beyond the backboard fading...Bird was CLUTCH

Today we have Whiners and Epic Excuse Makers. I love Basketball BUT, the more Old SCHOOL STUFF I watch the more I realize the game has changed for the worse.
@@amandaford2231 My comment above was a response to a continuous spammer who has since had his post deleted. As for Bird, one of the greatest ever and I agree with your assessment of the players of 30-40 years ago. Cheers!
Sort of a "You come at the king, you best not miss." situation. What was Laimbeer hoping to accomplish? Everyone knew that it was a bad idea to get Bird angry.
I'm a longtime Lakers fan... I give Bird all the props, gritty, fighter, shooter, rebounder etc. Bird would have made any team great. He is in my top 5!
Well sir, this conversation wasnt about Larry Bird, it was about Bill Laimbeer. Bill would take a basketball and rub it in the opponents face and he was a dirty player, even his old teamates say that.
It's not really fair to compare those two. In their primes the main rivalry was Magic vs Bird. Jordan didnt really have a match in his prime. It wouldve been cool to see Jordan vs Olajuwon though. He was probably the closest talent in the Jordan era.
Pre-88 Bird also had that defensive play where he’d let the opponent do their thing then swipe the ball from over the too as the offensive player was driving to the hoop. He got multiple blocks on Jordan in this manner.
Notice Bird after getting hit the 2nd time in the face by laimbeer, said absolutely nothing. Didn't bitch to ref, nothing..Just went out and dominated the rest of the game. That's what legends like Bird did. In today's game that ain't never gonna happen
This is a perfect example of why Lebron will NEVER match Larry. He may be bigger and stronger, but it's toughness at the end of the day, big and strong don't mean anything without toughness.
Um, no. Bird outplayed all of the best during his era. He outsmarted them and beat them. He outplayed the greatest. If he could beat MJ thee he would easily have beaten Labron. He would have analyzed his game and then made him play the way he wanted him to play. Labron might score more points, as many players did against Bird, but he would lose the game. With the pressure on, Bird's skill set would crush Labron's spirit. Larry was one of the toughest to ever play the game. And he wasn't puny. He was 6'9" and 220-230 pounds. Labron is 6'8" and 250 pounds. Bird outsmarted and outmaneuvered many players that were bigger than him. He played in an era when everyone was strong and hit hard. Labron is not used to that level of physicality and he would crumble.
Bird is one of the best to ever step on the court, period.
Lets never forget mullie dude

That was Larry Bird in microcosm
tenacious and fearless and willful
Totally agree.
Man, so much hand-checking... They'd foul out by half-time if playing today. Awesome.
Ainge is like let me pass it
Bird was the best player ever
Larry Bird. What a player. I hope he is well.
I love watching these Old School videos. The Heart. The Soul. The Violent Fouls. The Epic Determination are ALL missing from the game today. This Bird guy is one hell of a competitor. Today we have Whiners and Epic Excuse Makers. I love Basketball BUT, the more Old SCHOOL STUFF I watch the more I realize the game has changed for the worse.
Love the old days of the NBA!
Man, I loved that era of basketball.
Larry Bird one of the best if all time! Loved this era of the Celtics!
Bird actually scored 43 points in this game and it was the most points Bird would ever score in a playoff game.
@Landyn Jeffrey This is about the 20th time I’ve seen you post the same garbage over the last few months.
Awesome 👌
@@toddlevine9377 Look. The game today is not the same as the 80s and 90s. You can say whatever you want. Those players were committed.
@@amandaford2231 My comment above was a response to a continuous spammer who has since had his post deleted. As for Bird, one of the greatest ever and I agree with your assessment of the players of 30-40 years ago. Cheers!
@@toddlevine9377 I was Courtside the night Bird scored his career high. 18th birthday present.
It was at this point the Pistons knew they had fucked up.
Sort of a "You come at the king, you best not miss." situation. What was Laimbeer hoping to accomplish? Everyone knew that it was a bad idea to get Bird angry.
Awesome competitor, my pick for the best ever!
That was cool, he let his game do the talkin.
Wow. It's been a long time since I've seen Bird at his best. That was one cagey dude.
"The Bird Man"!
Oh yeah, you messed with him, he'd make you pay!
Legend👍🏀💯👊💣💥🏆🏆🏆...
I'm a longtime Lakers fan... I give Bird all the props, gritty, fighter, shooter, rebounder etc. Bird would have made any team great. He is in my top 5!
We miss seeing you play, Larry Bird!
Larry Bird is so much more amazing than anyone today.
The best revenge is ultimate success. Bill Laimbeer was an asshole on the court and when Barkley decked him that time, I loved it!
Yep, and he has 2 NBA titles to show for being an asshole. I think he wins.
Him having 2 NBA titles had everything to do with his team, and nothing to do with him being an asshole.
Well sir, this conversation wasnt about Larry Bird, it was about Bill Laimbeer. Bill would take a basketball and rub it in the opponents face and he was a dirty player, even his old teamates say that.
Larry Bird the best all around player in NBA history! Laimbeer was a punk
Sorry, there was this guy named wilt chamberlain...
@@sludge4125 and spelled J O R D A N
Larry Bird is my favorite all time and I live in Chicago!
I miss those days.
Ohhh, how I miss the days of Bird & Magic!
Larry Bird is the GOAT!! Period!
Wow simply the greatest all time....
He was a Beast
Bird was smart enough to never try to guard MJ, MJ not so much...
@艾略特 too much size and experience on Bird's end
Perhaps you can show a video clip of Jordan getting past Bird cuz I can show one of Jordan NOT getting by Bird.
Larry Bird-best basketball player ever in the world
Oh, have you not heard? It was my understanding that everyone had heard....
BBBBBBBB Bird Bird Bird... Ba Ba Ba Bird is the word!
I’m a life-long Pistons fan, but Bird was amazing.
When the chips are on the table, Larry Bird's the man!
Amazing player. He played most of his career with back problems and he always performed great
Notice Bird after getting hit the 2nd time in the face by laimbeer, said absolutely nothing. Didn't bitch to ref, nothing..Just went out and dominated the rest of the game. That's what legends like Bird did. In today's game that ain't never gonna happen
i came to boston the same year as larry. i watched all the games, and i cant't remember him ever missing a free throw in the 4th quarter.
no of course not (but imagine if i could).i'm just sayin he's all-time clutch.
you did a great job of being his lucky charm / good omen. thanks for being there !
Bird was a beast !!! Coming from a lakers fan !!
+trha2222 blah blah blah
+trha2222 lol
Great to see Lawrence Bird kicking ass
An all time great and legend
80s basketball. What a show.
Even the cop at the end showed respect!
This is a perfect example of why Lebron will NEVER match Larry. He may be bigger and stronger, but it's toughness at the end of the day, big and strong don't mean anything without toughness.
+Joe Cap Also, I doubt he has Bird's heart and desire.
+tangiers59 WORD
well, that and intelligence, passing, shooting, playmaking, and clutch performance.
+Doug in San Diego real talk
