Your descriptions of cramps have helped me understand what is going on with my body. I have had the sharp leg cramps at night (calf and, worst of all, inner thigh) for 8 years now. Nothing seems to help - stretching or not, high fluid intake or not, lots of exercise or not. Daily electrolytes seem to help a bit but are not a cure. Recently I have been also getting spasms in my hamstring muscles, again at night, either in bed or just after getting up. To be honest, it’s ruining my quality of life, since I can never relax in bed and don’t get more than 5-6 hours of sleep before it gets too uncomfortable to stay in bed. A few days ago, I started taking magnesium glycilate as you recommend (280mg per day). For two nights I had just the calf cramps, and for the last three nights no cramps whatsoever. I’m much more comfy in bed and sleeping better. I hope I’m not in for a nasty shock, but the signs are good. Thank you for this video and for the recommendation. It’s made a big difference.

Update: a couple of weeks on the magnesium glycilate. Frequency of cramps much reduced. The severity and duration seem better, too. Half as bad, for half as long. All in all, a big improvement but not a cure so far. Time will tell, but I am hopeful. MG definitely an essential for me from now on. Thanks again.

@ Sadly, the cramps came back after a week or so. They seem to come in waves of a few weeks, and then I don’t get them (or very reduced) for a week or two. This makes it hard to isolate what is actually working. I stopped the magnesium in the end with no change. My doctor had put me on quinine bisulphate ages ago, and I was taking this at random times during the day. I’ve found if I take this as I actually get into bed it seems much better, as if the quinine only worked for a limited time. I’ve had over a month with only one bad night since I started doing this. I’m getting regular nights of 7 hours now, which I haven’t had for years. Thanks for asking.

I’ve been suffering with spasms in my lower back, and cramping in my right leg that usually starts at the back of my thigh. Last week I experienced spasms that escalated from my lower back to my entire body. This in turn triggered a 2 1/2 hours long panic attack. So frightening, and bizarre that I had to be transported to the ER. Blood pressure escalated to 170 / 90. I thought I was suffering a heart attack, but no chest pain. My PT recommended that next time I get a muscle spasm or cramps to do the stretching exercises before I get out of bed. Good advice. Also, my PT recommended a heating pad.

My left leg spasms started in mid April and was sent to see a PT. I did some stretches and massages and saw some improvement In May. Just last week cramps started again but not as severe as when it started. I walk 14,000 steps daily even with the pain (because I have no choice but walk my dog 2x daily). I have been taking potassium and magnesium both 250ml each. But, I’ve learned so much from your presentation and will increase magnesium to about 400m. I will also switch to bottle water. Thanks so much for taking time to share such valuable information. 🙏

I started getting night cramps in my legs, feet and thighs in my early 60,s. (I’m now in my early 70,s). Without doubt a single magnesium tablet taken at first, once every two days fixed it. I now need to take one tablet every night before bed which guarantees relief. Wow! What a huge relief it was to eventually find this simple yet relatively cheap solution to an extremely painful experience.

I take m.glacinate.However it did not do the trick until i combined it with calcium. How strange not only that. My teeth really suffered without calcium. When I lived in Africa I used to take calcium daily because of my limited diet. I was just fine there. i had no issues for 27 years. As soon as I returned to USA I have stopped taking calcium and then all cramps and dental issues started. I have read somewhere how bad calcium is. In the same time there are plenty of articles about taking magnesium and calcium together because one without the other does not work.

Lately, an evening after work, I have experienced very unusual bad muscles cramps. It happened on both legs at the same time, at differents places. They were gone and came back, back and forth. It was very painful. And I was thinking if it was possible that could be blood clots, then I have thought to thinner my blood with water and cayenne pepper powder and mixed some spices like curcurma, black pepper, cloves powder etc. Then the cramps went away but I was very scared.

I have severe thigh and groin cramps that last about 5 to 10 minutes. After watching this video, I have been taking the recommended dose of magnesium glycinate. It definitely has made a difference in frequency. But after having a MRI, it was discovered I have all kinds of spine, and lower back problems such as critical narrowing and compression of nerve roots and canals. Also a build up of scar tissue after 5 full term pregnancies. Our water source is hard as well so I’m switching to bottled water. So my muscle spasms are caused on a multi level of conditions. He’s a mechanic who still works at his shop. But this has been happening for the past year. We consulted his doc who did a few in office muscular tests and she noted his upper arms are quite slim to skinny perhaps he is losing muscle mass I asked him to be sent to a neurologist to rule out anything more serious like MS or even ALS. But thanks for this info we shall read the other comments.

Going on 40 ish years now I have a shadow lump in my left calf. It can be felt but can’t be seen via x-ray or ultrasound. My cramps seem to radiate from it. It cramps first and then it could either go down and contort my foot or go up and under my knee. On very rare occasions it does both. All of it sneaks up on me and is very painful. Most often it happens at night when my legs are horizontal with my body. Sometimes before sleep, sometimes wakes me from sleep or it could be as I am waking up for the day. Very hard to walk after it happens. I have found excessive coffee drinking will cause flair ups. Which also means my water intake is low. Hydration is a key to keeping the cramps at bay but there have been times when a mini cramp will sneak up and cause me to stop everything.
Massage, stretching and hydration must remain constant in an effort to not have them. But life gets busy.

I used to get a lot of mosquito bites as a kid (I lived in Florida at the time) and I would scratch and scratch and pick at the scabs. I also played soccer and I sprained my legs like in 3 or more occasions. Maybe that’s why my legs are messed up now? (Im 27) I notice my balance is very bad if I stand on one foot, and one time I was running and I felt my leg janky and wobbly if that makes sense. When I used to run in the gym I would also feel cramping sensations and that would make me stop. Right now I work a desk job and my legs been actin up on me. Really scary cramps. I was told by a friend to see a rheumatologist that might do the trick?

WOW! I wouldn’t have thought of my water. This house I’m in now has very hard water. I get terrible leg cramps or muscle spasms. Especially when I am in bed and stretch my legs. Such as when I wake up.
I have tried everything. I’m on electrolytes daily and drink lots of water. My water is filtered, but very hard. I take magnesium and many other supplements.
I’m older (63) and I walk a lot for work. About 6000 to 10000 steps per day during the week. I’m on my feet most of the day. Very little time to sit. Even at home on the weekends.
I think it is worth a shot for me to go on bottled water for a short time to see if it helps.

I have a problem with muscle spasms in right buttock near the sacrum and coccyx when I walk. 42 years now, it had eased up for a few years but is back again the past year. You have me thinking that it may be from the hard water where I’ve just moved to. The only thing that seems to work for me is if I stay fit enough to jog close to 2 miles every couple of days! Has something to do with the way I’m built. So I’m working on it but it’s taking me forever to get there this time around. Taking Mg but don’t notice any difference maybe I need a bit more. After a 2-3 hour squash training session I will cramp in both legs, quads and hamstrings. Difficult to stretch both and it is agonising. This only happens when I don't stretch immediately after exercise. So make sure you stretch every night and after exercise.

I’ve only suffered severe muscle cramps under my left thigh, with my muscle tightening hard and this last 3-5 mins with sureness next 24 hours. Why predominantly left thigh as your vid picture depicts? I’m active and fit yet have type 2 diabetes. I’ve had a frightening episode of finger cramps while riding on a cold winter morning. I had to pull my fingers back to straighten. That’s when I started benefitting with magnesium tabs a night prior to any expected next day physical activity. Stretch exercises have now become a routine.

I have to have a heating pad handy for muscle spasms. I get them in my legs, hands, rib cage, diaphram, bladder. Heat w😮orks faster than any medication.
    Water, calcium? Really?
Any idea what exercise intolerance is? Cause? Diagnosed in my 20's, I'm in my 50's. Magnesium glycinate, I take daily, potassium (avocados) and celtic salt really, really help those spasms.
However, I'm now dealing with a torn meniscus (left knee), 9 yrs old. And muscle tightness from the ankles up. Exercising only seems to make it tighter. I even tore my achilles tendon at the heel (left side). I try to continue walking, at least some every day but its getting worse. I'm disabled because of the knee injury/severe arthritis, I drive a bus from 7am-10 and 1pm-4. It's the only job I can do as I can't stand for longer than a few minutes without support/or walk. Can't sit for long periods either.

I have a disruption from taking SSRI for 5 years. After stopping, I have chronic benign muscle fasciculations syndrome. It's been going on 24/7 every body part for 2 years. It won't stop. So, if anyone knows what to do, I'll pay you my life savings. Ugh, can't take it. There are neurotransmitter tests, but idk how I feel about them. Just not sure what to do because my minerals levels are not the problem. Magnesium and electrolytes don't help. I think it's def a receptor or actual electrical imbalance. So if you're reading this, don't take SSRI for long periods because it will ruin your life

They have actually found out that the source cramps and spasms are actually hematomas, or bleeding within the muscle itself. This can happen when muscles are exercised or stretched.
We all know that when we exercise we are tearing muscle fibers and healing, so it seems logical that there can be bleeding within the muscle.
Magnesium has bever helped me with my cramps. I get cramps, even when I am fully hydrated.
I typically get cramps in my calves between 2 and 5 am on days after I have exercised. I have noticed that the frequency of cramps is increasing with my age. I used to get a cramp or "Charlie horse" maybe once or twice a year. Sometime in my 30s or 40s that increased to once every 3 to 6 months. Now that I am over fifty it is more like one cramp every other month.
I have found the best way FOR ME to relieve a cramp in the calf muscle is to stand up and put weight on it. Usually by tge time I can do this however the damage is already done and my muscle has a knot in it that feels like a bruise (because it is a bruise) for several days or even up to 2 weeks! The best way I have found to alieveate the bruised knot is the application of heat and massage or the massage and then the application of heat.
I recommend having a girlfriend and/or a wife, who likes to massage you. 😊

Really interesting I'm 44 and recently started getting leg spasm in my right thigh. They are particularly bad a night but are also present during the day. I am a delivery driver and am behind the wheel of a van for 9 hours a day. The longer the driving the worse the spasm. The spasms started about the same time as I had the chicken pox this February. I recently covered for another driver on a much shorter delivery run with a lot more deliverys but for less driving and my night spasms where far less severe. Am taking calcium and magnesium. Would love any advice please.

I am in the middle of a double thigh cramp! It's easing a bit now with 2 hot wheat bags. It happened today as I was getting out of a friend's car. If I get this kind of cramp then it's usually in my calves or feet and nocturnal, often waking me early morning. When I say the pain is off the scale...that is no exaggeration 😒! I started magnesium about 3.5 years ago when after a fall, I began getting these sort of cramps and muscle spasms in my back. It definitely helped! However, now I'm wondering whether I need a different type or a larger dose perhaps...I currently take a combination of glycinate, citrate, taurate and malate. The elemental Mg is 345mg in 3 capsules...although I take 2 as consider that I'm getting enough as through diet also. The glycinate is the larger amount in the combo. I also drink a cupful of coconut water just before bed as it's rich in potassium. Hmmm...I think I'll order some Mg glycinate...anyone have any insight please? Thank you for your very informative video. ❤
