Very rare. 1982 Keke Rosberg won the title with 4th or even 5th best car. Keke's Williams FW08 was way slower than Ferrari, Brabham and Renault. Arguably it was even worse than the Cosworth McLaren. According to old Derek Daly interview it had 150-200 hp deficit in qualifying. Keke won the title with consistency and (relative) reliability... although not a single driver completed 11 races that year. Had Senna won the title with that car, they'd still be talking about it. But Keke was not a media favorite and came from a small country. 1986 Prost won the title with an inferior car 2007 Kimi Raikkonen won the title with 2nd best car Those come to mind.
On the Keke note I fully agree he was in the 4th (at best) fastest car but best has to factor in reliability and well Renault and Brabham had massive let's say explosive issues.
@@Meodread Sure. It was still an incredible feat to win the title with that car. His teammate Daly achieved NOTHING with that FW08. Great example is the battle between Keke and Villeneuve at Long Beach. Villeneuve overtook him on the straights like it was nothing but Keke took him in the corners. Great stuff.
@@detonator2112 For sure. I'm not in anyway taking anything away from Keke Rosberg. That Williams is if not the worst car to win a WDC it's the second worst (1994 Benetton being imo the only other candidate and I suppose the 1981 Brabham is just hard to put a finger on because of the second seat being filled by such scrubs). I'm just saying that fastest and best are 2 separate calculations. The Williams was on pure Q speed the 5th maybe even 6th fastest car (Behind Ferrari, Renault, McLaren, Brabham and possibly Lotus) but when factoring in reliability and driveability it's ranking does have to increase. Still not the best, that was Ferrari almost for sure and probably even below McLaren still.
@@Meodread Prost's 1985 McLaren wasn't the fastest car, either. But it was reliable (for Prost). 1985 was a disaster for Lauda because of reliability issues. Somehow Prost made the cars to last. He wasn't nicknamed "professor" for nothing.
I'd argue the Williams in 91 was the faster car but that Senna was the faster driver outside of the early season reliability issues that car was immense. I may give Mansell the benefit of the doubt in that he was returning to the team so was less familiar with the car.
I've been trying to gather data via AI on this topic, taking all sorts of different factors into account and of course whole seasons into account. I'll put the 11 season's I've done in simple terms based on the info I and the AI have gathered. Fastest Car and Drivers Champions Car and constructors if applicable 1992 Williams 1993 Williams 1994 Williams, Schumacher Benetton Drivers Champion. (Without Schumacher both the 94 and 95 Benetton go down to 3rd quickest car) 1995 Williams, Schumacher Benetton, Benetton Constructors Champions. 1996 Williams 1997 Williams 1998 McLaren 1999 McLaren, Ferrari Constructors Champions 2000 McLaren, Schumacher Ferrari, Ferrari Constructors Champions 2001 Ferrari 2002 Ferrari I'll continue gathering this up as much as possible eventually sharing out the inner details and variables, but for now, I am gonna keep trying to gather as much data as I can with the help of the AI for earlier and later seasons. But This is the basics of what I've gathered so far and of course there is a margin of error but this about as accurate as i can get at the moment.
Verstappen was already winning with under powered Red Bull Renault against mighty Mercedes of previous years, even with tricky handling or broken car (Hungaroring '21 and Silverstone '22), he still delivered decent results. If that doesn't tell the quality of his drive, I don't know what does.
He did get good individual results in the second and third fastest cars, but whether he can sustain that over the remaining races this season is a whole different question
The Ferrari was clearly faster than the McLaren in both 2007 and 2008. Alonso later partnered both Kimi and Massa and didn't just beat them, he wiped the floor with them. The fact that Kimi and Massa were going toe to toe with Fernando and Lewis very much indicates Ferrari had a faster car. The Ferrari had more poles, wins and fastest laps in both years, except poles in 08 where they had 8 each. FL in 08 Ferrari swept 13-3 though.
@@jonahehlers1673 I reckon so, would of cemented his legacy in a very definitive way if he had carried on the extra couple of years, while he was starting to lose speed, he had enough to beat a prime Massa by 3 or 4 race wins worth of points.
The 2007 McLaren was arguably a bit slower, but better. Alonso and Hamilton were the first drivers ever to have a season with McLaren with 0 retirements due to car breaking down; the closest was Hamilton's gear box malfunctioning in Brazil. Meanwhile, Raikkonen retired twice and Massa once, due to hydraulics, electrics, and suspension issues, all from top-3 positions.
not sure what metric youre using here the mclaren is currently on track to get the constructors while lil maxy looks like he could possibly get bounced for the drivers. I dont necessarily believe Norris is a shoe in by any means and i think McLaren and McLaren fans whining about 'if x does y then norris wont win the drivers' - i put it to you no one expected them to be anywhere near the position they are now, and for Norris to get the Drivers he needs to pull a Verstappen himself and utterly dominate the rest of the season.... remember how many different cars have been on the podium this year... This wasnt a whinge about your subject by the way, i just dont see it being as the thumbnail pic implies right now. Papaya is winning, Red Bull currently isnt. Especially not with Perez and Ricciardo not being swapped around a la Kvyat and Verstappen given that Danny Ric has a better chance of getting more points in the RBR than Perez due to being a currently active driver who already knows that car like the back of his hand.
McLaren currently have comfortably the fastest car so technically anything other than winning all races till the end of the season would be a let down for them. IMO Ricciardo wouldn’t do much better, he’s not even got an upper hand on tsunoda
The McLaren is clearly faster and has been for the majority of the season so yes it is pretty clear. Norris has continued to bottle opportunities and all we get for him are excuses even though he got the upgrades first when they couldn't fit them for both cars. Spain, Miami, Silverstone, Canada, Monza, imola if we're being generous, Monaco, Hungary, Spa that's 9 races out of what 16 where he was in for a win. Its shocking. Yes other cars have been on the podium however the one constant has been the McLarens speed.
Also on your point of expectations that's irrelevant targets change and in McLarens case they knew from the start if the year that there would be upgrades, I believe it was Stella who said that they hadn't been able to complete their car in time so yh that's not an excuse for the team or the drivers.
Schumuncher rolled a wrecked car out onto the race track in front of a car he knew was coming. there is no 'damon shouldnt have been there' - if Schumacher hadnt been there in a wrecked car, Damon wouldnt HAVE to have 'shouldnt been there' to begin with. His behaviour was atrocious, so was the FIA and same happened with Vettel. Why? Because Germans dont watch F1 when Germans arent winning. "Buhbuh y no german gp now?" Last German Speed Demon was Rosberg.
Are you saying that Schumacher shouldn’t have been allowed to drive on a circuit because he had damage? There’s no way he could’ve known the full extent of his car’s condition. Damon sent a lunge on an ailing car when the primary focus of the recovering driver in front would not have been to check the mirrors and see if someone was diving up the inside from a big distance
