As a gay man who came out in 1976, I watched my near entire friend group die young. By 92 they were all gone, save me and my monogamous boyfriend. If the young guys think that hell is not something that can reoccur, they are not only blind but stupid. Thanks for your content and focus MC. 💜🌈💜💋

🙌 Preach. I was a kiddo who lost many a family friend living in SF. I talk to the younger queer generation now, and they’re mostly oblivious/ignorant to our traumatic history. Not all, but most. It needs to be taught to all of our youth.

I came out in 1981, right as HIV/AIDS began picking up speed. By 1991 the disease had taken out at least half my friend group. By 2006 they were all gone. I understand your pain and loss, but it's hard for those that didn't live through it to understand the anger, fear, pain, and loss thee community experienced.

Thank you SO MUCH for spending time talking about the AIDS crisis. I was a little girl in the 90’s living in SF when it happened, and I can’t tell you how many (GROUP) funerals/memorials I went to for my parents’ friends who were robbed of their lives. The new generation needs to be aware so we don’t repeat the same mistakes.

@@zzizahacallar It was scary. It really was. I was lucky to have a family that was so supportive of the queer community- a lot of men my dad worked with were friends of our family. One of them lived around the corner from us and died in that home with his partner. I remember when he started to really deteriorate and couldn’t stop by for dinner parties anymore. We would drive past their house to go to school everyday, always wondering and worried about his last days. RIP to my beloved’s, Donny and Marty- Castro legends.

FACTS. Just for context, I’m a straight woman from Long Beach and in 1989, just after my 18th birthday I began volunteering at what’s was coined as an “AIDS house”. Men who we’re literally dying of AIDS were housed in extremely cramped conditions in houses that were barely habitable. There were several very sick men in a small shared space. They were tossed aside and cast from society where no one “had” to be near them for fear of contracting HIV. These men desperately needed food and toiletries and medicine and love and compassion. We brought them every thing we could and hung out and talked and read to them and they were so extremely appreciative. I felt more love from those men. ❤

AIDS took so many I loved. It felt all we did was go to funerals. I was a Buddy for the Inland AIDS Project and it broke my heart to see some of the guys pass without anyone in their family present. For those considering having kids and parents that may be watching, love your children unconditionally and if you can't do that, you shouldn't be having children! Don't have them or realize that kiddo you have is the same baby you had from the second you are born. My daughter is a trans woman and she is my joy. I am so damn proud of her and she's the best person I know. Since she might see this, I love you Rose! I send out free mom hugs.

Thank you Matt for highlighting the AIDS epidemic in this video. I am 61 and still feeling survivors guilt from that time. I lost most of my friends and, because of prep and more social acceptance most people these days don’t even know, or maybe even care, about what we went through. It was very scary. Not just the act of coming out, because of the judgment and fear of discrimination, but the fear of death in acting out on our feelings. It was a dark time and people my age are still traumatized by that period of time.

What a fascinating video about Mr. Kristofer, and I look forward to your follow-up with Amp Pup. Personally, I am as vanilla as it comes regarding to my proclivities. What Mr. Kristofer engages in is definitely outside my personal taste and realm. But I respect others’ kinks and likes, and it’s always interesting to hear their insights and perspectives. I’m a year younger than Mr. Kristofer and have lived that San Francisco life since the 1990’s, too, having come out back then. It was quite an interesting period as the gay community adjusted from the AIDS crisis to becoming educationally aware and sexually safe within the community. In that aspect, guys like Mr. Kristofer and I have witnessed and learned from a lot (even though I don’t know him) within the community. Also, what a sweet picture of your sister and you! So glad you got out to the city of my birth and enjoyed it!

Amp keeps a good balance on their videos because Daddy gets naughty. He likes having fun and making people laugh. I'm not the BDSM or Kink type, but still find the things they talk about fascinating. I feel that you should make separate video from 6:06 to around 11:00. The conversation in that one section is so powerful, and I genuinely want to share it because of its power

Rights are given and can more easily be taken away. They are so hard fought for, but they can be lost in a moment.

Right now trans rights are the thin edge of a political wedge. If the community doesn't protect trans rights, the rest will be on the chopping block next.

In the 80's in SF, there was a saying No Glove, No Love. This city had SO many gay men from financial district to Union Square---all gone. Most of my friends died or moved away.

So glad that you made it to SF! I've lived here for 40 years (from NYC) and the great majority of that time lived right in the middle of the Castro. So happy to see two of our handsome community members on your channel! I am also very grateful for any content that can shed light on the reality of the leather/BDSM/kink community as that is where I usually gravitated when I was going out and about. Your content is so important and educational. Good to see a bit of AIDS history covered here as well, since those of us who lived it at ground zero for so many years can often feel like that is easily lost/forgotten. I know that many os use are gone, didn't make it, but as far as teaching the younger community members about that history I think we're it! We need to be the teachers!

From a young age I knew I was gay, and came of age (and came out) in 1983. I appreciate the brief history discussed in this interview about our world in the gay community during the AIDS crisis. The fear in the gay community in those days was palpable. We were burying our friends & loved ones in large numbers and no one cared. No one listened to us. We were laughed at, we were mocked. We were told we deserved to die. Families disowned us, our own government turned its back on us. We were fired from jobs. We were kicked out of homes.
One of the reasons the gay community loved Diana, Princess of Wales, is that she was one of the first public figures to openly embrace an AIDS patient on international television. This was a pivotal moment for the gay community because people were afraid to touch us. Refused to hold us or be in the same room with us. And Mr. Kristopher is correct: today’s gay community doesn’t know about this is due to lack of education. This history of the AIDS crisis is largely ignored because of the advancements in science, research, and medication. Advancements for which the gay community had to *fight* for. And we are still fighting for our equal rights!

I love that Mr. Kristofer mentioned the influence of The Wild Wild West. I'm in my 60's and when I discovered bondage in the 80's I had already been fantasizing about it because of that show.
