I have always felt bad for Michael. He always took everything in stride. When he has dismissed by Van Halen he never slammed them. Even when Eddie and Alex decided Michael to lower his pay because he didn't write the songs. He said nothing. He is a true musician.
Mike is a great guy AND he knows how he got rich several times over with Van Halen and he got 1/4th song royalties for decades so he’s fine - the original VH catalog had 2 diamond albums and every album was multi platinum- that’s plenty of cheese to not even worry one second about all the other petty crap

I’ve seen interviews where Eddie said he played bass and the backing vocals were his not Michael Anthony’s. It seems like maybe Michael Anthony won the lottery and joined the right band at the right time. Perhaps he knows he should keep his mouth shut so he doesn’t draw too much attention to himself. He’s saying he hopes Alex doesn’t focus on the negative so maybe he means focus on him and how little he contributed to the band.

He's always been mine, too. His playing was superb. And I always waited for that voice to kick in and elevate a song. VH may not have hit the same level of success without him.

In my opinion it was Sammy that brought VH to a place they may not have ever been if not for him and in all honesty, Sammy ended up with the highest integrity he could have ever hoped for when Mikey came aboard!

Alex is holding a grudge for Mike staying friends with Sammy, and playing in the Circle to represent his contribution to Van Halen & make a living after they forced him out, made him give up his Royalties, and trashed him. Alex said (their tour isn't) "doing VH justice" before hearing a single note, and with the guy he personally picked to stand in for Ed, Joe Satriani having had 3 more years to practice & went all not, not to mimic Ed, but pay him respect. If Alex wanted to do VH & his brother "Justice" HE could have sat behind the drum kit. All he cares about is taking a giant backhanded cheap shot at Hagar. So who's the bigger man ? Not Alex.

Michael's honor is so bad-ass... Michael has been nothing short of gracious in regards to his parting (getting let go) with Van Halen. He really is one of the most classiest cats in the business, imo. He also goes down in the books as the bass player and founding member of one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Although I too don't know what aspects of the Van Halen brothers' story Alex's book will cover, I agree with Michael that it will primarily address the positive aspects of their humble beginnings and their meteoric rise, with discussion of their band-mates over the years, including, of course, Michael Anthony. We should not overlook the obvious, easy as that is to do, and that is that Alex and Michael formed the core "secret sauce" of the band. And Alex and Michael meshed so tightly and "spoke" the same musical language together with such verve and ease, that they rarely had to look at one another to know exactly what they needed to do as a team to make the Van Halen rhythm sound the powerhouse core that it was. Perhaps an example will clarify exactly what I mean. Listen to this Van Halen song which, except for the introduction, isolates the drums and bass. Every band should follow the Rush example, we're all equal. Peart wrote, Lifeson and Lee did the music. Lee and Peart were not original members, but that didn't bother them. They became a well oiled machine and were close friends. They never let ego get in the way.
Geddy Lee not an original member? Dude. He FOUNDED RUSH with Alex. Neil Peart replaced John Rutsey because JR was diabetic and couldn't tour without passing out. He quit the band right after their debut album was released. You're right about the dynamic between the three, and I don't think there's another example of such an amazing, long-lasting relationship in the history of recorded music, let alone prog rock.
I met and talked with Frank several times with Chick and with Steve Smith's Vital Statistics and a guitar clinic, super nice guy, very pleasant and humble giant of a musician.
He was the stability of VH. Even after how they treated him. I admire that, because I don't think I'd be as nice in taking the high road like he always has.
Michael should write also a book with his bassist being in VH.For me,his opinions and his point of views are as importats as opinions of other members of the band.

Ed was one of the best ever. Unfortunately, he knew it. Mike is responding as he always has with class and maturity. But... Its pretty hard to ignore Al could have taken better care of Mike or at least reminded Ed the VH sound is a fourth Mike and his high parts made every body sound better whoever was on lead vocs. Mike's got good friends and can work with whoever he wants and still make a nice bag every year.
I read the book, and Alex had zero negative comments about Michael Anthony. He actually complimented how well Michael and Ed's voices harmonized together . So haters....read the book. It is refreshing and takes us back to an amazing time in rock history. Good work, Alex Van Halen.
I've read the book. What occured to me was that Alex hardly talks about Michael (not negative, nor positive), but talks mostly, besides Eddie, about DLR.
As much as they were together losing Eddie must have been like loosing a body part! Sounds like Alex is in a lot of pain over his brothers passing I hope he can find peace. RIP Eddie.

Alex Van Halen has worked together with Michael Anthony in VH for 30 (!) years, from 1974 to 2004. Yet, in his new book, Alex hardly mentions him and if he does only very briefly. Personally I think that's disrespectful to Michael, since he's always been a loyal member of the band, until he was replaced with Wolf. And Sammy Hagar isn't mentioned at all...

I recall reading producer Ted Templeman's comments on the early Van Halen band. He was all about Eddie and his innovative guitar style thinking that Eddie could move on as a solo artist if the band couldn't cut it. He thought David Lee Roth was a bit of a mess but DLR listened and developed into the singer Templeman could work with. He also thought Alex was poor at keeping time on drums but had to stick with him because he was the "brother" of the budding star. Regarding Michael, he felt Mike was a sold bass player and he had no issues with him.
Michael Anthony is a classy individual. He was treated poorly by Eddie and Alex, who always stood with his brother. Eddie had his issues and treated people like shit for a good period of time. Sammy had the balls to call him out (when he was alive) . Much respect for both Sammy and Michael .

Mike quit because he was forced out due to eddie/alex new mgr. they wanted mike to leave and bring Eddie's son in. mike was forced to sign all away his right to the catalog. Mike took a 25% pay cut on the 2004 tour. the bros knew mike wanted to stay and used it against him as the slowly force him out. The VH website erased everything referring about mike and let's not forget the bros didn't even show up to the RRHOF.
In a band , you are expendable and replaceable ! We are not judged by our wins or losses , we are judged by how we handle our wins and losses ! Michael handles it well !

Unfortunately, most bands don’t have the dynamic Rush did as a trio. Each member being an equal component.

@2216sammy 100% This started when mike was collaborating and playing w chickenfoot; since VH wasn't coming out w/new material for some time. Mike quit because he was forced out due to eddie/alex new mgr. they wanted mike to leave and bring Eddie's son in. mike was forced to sign all away his right to the catalog. Mike took a 25% pay cut on the 2004 tour. the bros knew mike wanted to stay and used it against him as the slowly force him out. The VH website erased everything referring about mike and let's not forget the bros didn't even show up to the RRHOF.
Alex STILL has animosity towards Sammy and Mike. I know he'll be dealing with his loss the rest of his days, but Mike did nothing wrong .
In a band , you are expendable and replaceable ! We are not judged by our wins or losses , we are judged by how we handle our wins and losses ! Michael handles it well !
