Becorns Episode 1: Bluebirds

- Becorns are little people I make out of acorns and sticks. Then I photograph them in nature with real animals. In this video, I share my process for taking photos with some Eastern Bluebirds.

Hi folks. I appreciate the concern some of you have for the well being of the birds. I share your feelings and also felt very protective of their little family. Here are some precautions I took:
- To protect from predators, I built the birdouse and baffle according to the recommedations by the Connecticut Audubon (see below for link). The second platform was only in place during photography sessions when I was able to monitor for predators.
- It’s recommended to check Bluebird boxes at least once a week. From my research online, I learned that bluebirds are actually quite tolerant of humans. I opened up the box briefly every five days, and stopped when they had feathers and there was risk of birds jumping out. I only opened the box when the parents were away collecting food.

I’ve since come to understand that it’s illegal in the US to collect migratory bird feathers without a license because it violates International Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. The treaty makes it unlawful to hunt, take, capture, kill, or sell migratory birds. The statute extends to any bird part, including feathers, eggs, and nests. I found the bluejay feather on the ground, but there’s no way law enforcement could know that, thus the blanket regulation. There are plenty of bird species that aren’t protected though. Time to find some chicken feathers!
My goal is to honor and respect the animals, and I hope that by sharing what I learn about them, we all can expand our appreciation and respect for them.

Same here!! My brothers and I had bionicles! I had Tahu and he would ride my ponies to the dollhouse and then he would kidnap my bratz doll. I took my brothers bionicles and made them the good guys to steal back the girl and bring her home… then my brothers seen I took their bionicles and cut my horses tail and mane off 😂😢 so mean to their only sister

@@squirrel3443 lol I too have brothers and we played with bioncles. I never had bratz dolls but I had Barbies and I would make whole storylines with the different toys. This is bringing back so many childhood memories.
I don't know if anyone else has mentioned or noticed this, but you deserve credit for blending artistic style with an actual experience in encountering and connecting with nature. Your art creates an occasion in which you're able to interact with the animals. It's beautiful

Lovely! I've been making these little things most of my life. I hang them in trees maybe people will think the fairies left them. I'm most likely old enough to be your grandma. I'm glad to see young people continue with it.

Dave, it's awesome to see how you created this whole universe complete with a story and a coherent design language! Don't worry about leaving Lego. When you are a real designer/artist "the system" is simply way too limiting. Natural materials in their complexity are way more stimulating/rewarding to work with: there is always an element of surprise (failure) but the results are richer and deeper and thus more appealing.
Thanks so much! You sound like a Lego designer, but I'm not sure if I know you. I totally agree about the element of discovery when it comes to nature. All my creative plans are loose sketches and I'm forced to roll with whatever happens, which keeps things interesting. I do love the system and have so much respect for master builders though. I think both methods have their benefits. Sticks are a lot cheaper than bricks :)
@@davidmbird ... "Franklin D." here ... don't get me wrong - limitations force you to be inventive and to think on a more abstract level (maybe). However, IF you know how to use tools and if you are up for a challenge, natural materials appear to be a good choice because interacting with them provides you with a broader/deeper sensory stimulation - something the brain "likes"... Again, I am super-impressed with the Becorns and their universe - as well as with the way you tell the story in the video!

I was really inspired by your backstory. I'm kind of in the same boat myself right now. Just quit my job last week because it was just destroying my body and happiness. I haven't found my acorn yet but I'm confident that I will. Keep up the great work.

I used to make acorn horses with toothpicks, acorns, etc when I was small because I desperately wanted a horse. I created entire stables of them but they never looked as beautiful as your acorn people do. I hope you continue to share your stories and experiences with us. Many thanks!

Reminds me a bit of Brian Froud's "Faeries" book from 1978. Very imaginative, whimsical and gets the imagination going. Puts me to mind of little emissaries of Leshii.

This is how our world should be seen by everyone, both big and small! 🙂🙂🙂 So wonderful! It is such a gift for children to see our nature in this way and what it gives us!!! A huge thank you for your work and these heartwarming stories!!! So true and beautiful!
Becorns are without a doubt completely endearing ! Its easy to picture their future lives just by watching the story of their creation & the small interaction with the Bluebirds. I have raised baby birds before, 2 baby Mockingbirds, eyes closed & no feathers. My cat found them after a hurricane. Their constant feedings are a LOT of work. ( I was lucky, my neighbors raised parrots, so I had free baby bird food with all the vitamins they needed) That may be the only way you CAN get the shots of birds & the Becorns you want. You would be surprised how many people in your community raise or take care of injured birds. When they were ready I taught them how to find bugs & worms under small rotting branches. They left when they were ready to, sleeping indoors till then. I still have a large amount of Mockingbirds around my house today. Blue Jays & Chickadees may be more human socially friendly, if you get the Jays when theyre young - they like wet meaty dog or cat foods. Chickadees also take well to hand feeding. I'm very much looking forward to the adventures of the Becorns. Yes , you made the right decision :)
I also enjoy making little worlds...in planters mostly. I wanted to say though, that bionicles were my kids favorite toys ever. They are in thier 20s now and still talk about them. Your art is special to many.

There are so many ways to exercise and develop your creativity. The things people create from cardboard... Little houses, wall adornments. Things from paper, yarn, material, recycled items... Find your niche and just do something. Everything you try either moves you towards your passion or away from it. The only thing worse than failing is doing nothing at all

I’m fascinated by the magic and creativity in your work. Just a thought: maybe the blue birds were nervous by the blue jay’s feather you used on the shepherd’s staff. Blue jays are notorious for eating smaller bird’s eggs and babies.

We moved into this home almost 3 years ago. The front porch is elevated & has two large trees & some evergreen bushes nearby. Feeding & watching the birds every day gives me such joy. Masses of hummingbirds all summer, chickadees, cardinals, bright gold finches through the winter. I'm a big supporter of native plants, I've preserved what's here & planted many more. I do supplement seed, suet & thistle as well as an open water source. How much joy & relaxation these tiny gems have given me! I love creating from nature, you are far more handy than I.

My 20 year old was fascinated by Bionicles when they were young. To this day, when looking at Legos with their youngest siblings they wax poetic about the good old days when there were Bionicles. Thank you for what you created then. And for what you are creating now. It has touched our lives in a very special way.
This is just amazing! What a wonderful little world you have created! I did wonder what the adult blue birds thought after they had moved into this house and laid eggs - all of a sudden this platform with grass appears! LOL! I'm like you, I'm just amazed when I see birds like bluebirds, orioles, rose-breasted grosbeaks, goldfinches! And they're just flying around wild! They seem too beautiful to be so normal. I became a backyard birder about 3 years ago and saw birds I have never seen before in my 52 years of life. And I long and Hope to see a lot more!

Ok I love that we live in a time where this isn’t weird, it’s content 😊. Your Bcorns are adorable, the level of detail using natural supplies is impressive. They’re much better than my champagne corks painted as people from all over the world. I call them corkies & I give them to my youngest nieces & nephew to play with. For you the eventual photo is the goal, for me it’s putting love into making something & then letting the kids enjoy them (even when it’s destructive)

David, what a wonderful and very inspiring video. I'm a high school art teacher and I'm showing your work/videos and website to my students. My youngest son and daughter were walking with me today and we found these huge acorns we've not noticed before. We have Live Oaks and Water Oaks all around our house( in Mobile, Alabama) but they have very small acorns. The ones we found today were three times bigger. We showed them to my wife and were talking about them during lunch. We talked about My Neighbor Totoro and how cool it was when the Totoros left little acorn gifts wrapped with leaves- such a magical movie. Well, Google heard us talking about it. Our phones were off and still, about 30 minutes later when my wife was watching a gardening video, a link showed up to your Becorn video. We usually get irritated when Big Brother is listening, but it worked out well today. We LOVE your work. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. Cool how one thing leads to another.

I love creative people who build things with nature in mind keep doing it even if nobody sees it because it brings you joy and it brings me joy to see you do it I make little houses out of Maplewood sticks, they little log cabins and they’re so cute. I put moss around them and on the door I spray paint the moss to look like snow on the roof. They’re fun to do and they give me a chance to use nature to create and I love doing that
I find your Becorns very appealing. I love their little faces, and I was immediately captivated by the images with wildlife, it’s a brilliant concept. Children love animals and I think you have something really special here.

Yes... I’m 75 yrs old tiny woman who lives alone. Been on my own a long time. I’ve always felt a strong connection to non humans and to whimsy. Still feel that way. I think humans could learn a thing or 2 from watching nature videos about nature and wildlife...and learning about how smart, compassionate and loving sooo many non humans are. Amazing, in my opinion. So is your creativity and the Becorns.
We need more heroes like you. We’re all part of Nature...but non humans seem to happier, more content, and seem to lead less complicated lives than many adult humans.

We have Western Bluebirds here in Colorado every spring/summer. Every year I add another nest box! They even raised hatchlings in the eaves of our house, where a bit of siding came loose to let them in. This was year two in the eaves!
This year, a pair started building a rather exposed nest in a nook on our front porch, so I built them a better nest box and installed it next to the nest they had started. They happily moved in, and we heard hatchlings on the front porch this year too!
Meanwhile, in the pastures around the house, there are a dozen or so nest boxes, and a couple more in the garden and in the barnyard. Bluebirds are pleasant neighbors!

Incredibly sweet little acorn faces! I used to make owls out of the rough side of milkweed pods when I was little. I am so happy to see an adult finding creative uses from nature! I hope it will get children outside, away from tvs & phones ,& back to nature! OUTSTANDING, David!

I absolutely love this you are so brilliant. Once upon a time there was a becorn named Eldridge he was the elder of the forest and keeper of all the forest animals. As the months passed by he knew it was almost time for Beverly and Simon blue birds little ones to hatch . So he decided to make the 2 day venture from oak hill to blue feather lane in hopes to bless the younglings before they start their journey in life. As he arrived it was just in time big plans were underway and they were getting dinner ready for the big flight ahead. Big brother blue stopped to say hello and let Eldridge know how the younglings were fairing and offered him a small pillar as a token of gratitude for blessing the younglings on their journey . Eldridge was very pleased with the offer but decided the younglings could use it more than he so they could build up their strength so he wished them best of luck and was on his way as big brother blue took the pillar to the younglings.
