But I also feel the same way about “pampering”, not so much lip scrubs but things on my face like sheet face masks or eye patches I CANT STAND because of how they feel on my skin even though everyone else finds them “relaxing”.

I have autism and ADD, and VISCERALLY despise the feeling of being sweaty more than anything in the world (which will sometimes carry over into not wanting to shower but not often) like i would rather be thrown off a cliff than be sweaty lmao, so I can really relate to sensory issues like this. I don't like being touched anywhere from my armpits to my feet basically..it's a mess.
But seeing you try so hard just warms my heart, you are endlessly adorable an i am so proud of every day you try, and even the days you don't ❤

Yeah being sweaty and hot makes me an unreasonable person! If I am sweaty, all I want to do is get un sweaty. If I'm trying to go inside and get water and dry myself off, and anything gets in the way I will lose my temper so fast. I have zero spoons left when I am sweaty. All I can think about is getting un-sweaty.

God I feel that I literally have a congenital condition where I don’t have as many sweat glands and fucking pass out so much because I live in Florida because I worked hard labohr jobs but honestly thank god because I’d rather drop dead than have to live with how sweaty it was making me. THIS describes how I feel so well about sweatiness and showering 😭
I have asd and ADHD and while I may not have as strong of a emotional reaction to it as you do, I still find sweatiness SO uncomfortable.
And at the end of a day I also often avoid showering for as long as I can if I feel overstimulated after an exausting day or I just try to get it out of the way as fast as I can if I feel like it.
And if I arrive to school while feeling really sweaty, the first thing I do is go to the bathroom to wipe as much of it off as I can and then just sit there for a bit until I feel... dry?? Idk I just hate it sm 😭😭

@@Just-Me825CORN STARCH 😤 I had a dialysis patient who just would eat it and I had to leave because the SOUND OF IT CRUNCHING, the crunch under my SHOES it on all my supplies and her using it as dusting powder becoming bread.
It was a lot for me and usually I don’t really care about most things as a nurse. It’s mostly food stuff for some reason? My husband used to make fun of me for it before I got diagnosed and was like oh 😅 this makes more sense. Because bodily functions and noises don’t. Eating and other things can really bother me though.
It was funny shit ON my person I do not care. Not even interested more like trying to figure out and kind of annoyed at the slip risk and lack of supplies I have to clean/ how I am going to tackle it based on like the consistency of the BM not really the patient or sensation surrounding the function.(lack of support).

Oooof, I feel this. Sensory stuff in that exact part of the store is the first thing that I remembered when I found out that I'm autistic, as far back as I can remember, if I breathe around the perfume counters, my lungs will quite literally stop working, nothing in or out. I went through a mall a few days after finding out about my diagnosis, and as soon as I took a big breath on the way through the department store it all clicked.

Im able to push my responses, deep down, ie over stimulation, unusual stimming behaviour etc, it makes me disassociate and shut down all but vital functions. The trouble is its like whack a mole, it pops up elsewhere, at some point, depending on the severity of the initial reaction, it has to manifest sometime, somewhere or it becomes self destructive behaviour.
I learnt to do this very young, as my father wouldnt, under any circumstance allow extreme responses or unusual behavior from one of his children. I can rock and scream internally, but Im almost locked in whilst Im doing it. Its extremely exhausting and will take its toll in many ways. Its not visible in the moment though, a masking super power. This is why I can hold down jobs better, where Im working alone.

Physical exfoliation is such a bad idea anyways! You can create small cuts in the skin. Although it seems sounds worse because the word is scarier, chemical exfoliation is so much gentler. I have a smoothing lotion with urea that my feet just love, for example, and really keeps my heels from cracking in the winter. But for lips, because the skin there is so, so thin I would agree that building them up with moisturizers and occlusives is generally better than either physical or chemical exfoliation.

Aw man, I felt this one! I have never tried to use a lip scrub, but I pick at my lips. I really don't want to, but the scratchy feeling of chapped lips makes me want to crawl out of my skin, and unfortunately lip balm (or most cosmetics) also mess with my sensory issues, though to a lesser extent. For me, the fact that I can't touch my face when wearing cosmetics/lip balm is really uncomfortable and makes me feel way too conscious of my Mode Of Existence, kind of like when I wear clothing that doesn't feel totally secured onto me. Like I can't just move how I normally do or it'll all get messed up. It usually doesn't cause a meltdown by itself, but is a huge ambient drain on my energy and ability to function and can lead to sensory overload due to other triggers (like loud places) SUPER fast compared to my normal threshold for getting overwhelmed.

You can stop it by putting pure lanolin or bag balm on at night. While you sleep, your lips heal.
In a bath, pour salt in your water and get the salty water on your lips. It will loosen the skin (because salty water is soft water).
You can use plain Vaseline if you don’t like the other balms.
Also, introduce a humidifier to your house - winter heat dries out the air and your lips and skin.
Humidity regulation helps a great deal in prevention of chapped, dry lips and skin.

I’m highly sensitive to how things feel on my skin and have found that the lip scrubs that come in stick form always trigger a reaction, no matter the brand. I do, however, love the Hanalei lip scrub. It comes in a little jar and I love the smell and even the taste. Zero triggers. Not that it will work for everyone, but thought I would put it out there as an option! As a side note, their lip treatment is also great, although I prefer to buy the ‘travel’ size instead of the full sized one. I don’t know if it’s the applicator on the full size, which is similar to lip gloss, or something else.

Oh, and in case someone wants to try a good lip mask, I really like the Laneige lip sleeping masks. They come in several different flavors/scents, but I’ve only tried the vanilla.

I don't think I'd be able to stand lip scrub either. I'll sometimes gently brush my lips with my toothbrush to exfoliate, but otherwise I just use chapstick frequently.

Kaelynn, try the cerave healing ointment. Just apply that multiple times daily & the crusty stuff will disappear.
No need for lip scrubs. Dermatologists actually don’t recommend bc they increase flaking by lifting up more skin cells (which causes the flaking). You just need to heal your skin barrier & those skin cells that are flaking will lay back down when your barrier is intact.

I have trouble with lotion too. Have you tried only using it on the backs of your hands and your wrists? It’s still uncomfortable, but it helps me be able to use it. (I use my wrists to rub it on, so no at no point does it get on my palms)

I am someone who hates lip scrubs and chapstick and anything in between, which isn’t cool because I love having my lips look different pretty shades of pink and red, but it’s not worth it. Lipstick is better than gloss sensory wise but I also hate them all due to the fact that they come off on straws and napkins and clothes by accident, etc.

Ironically, i am autistic and have the exact same lipscrub as the one in the thumbnail. I am actually obsessed with the sensation and taste due to sensory seeking feautres i display. I hate sticky lip glosses though. Whereas other things would trigger my sensory issues such as sounds, lights, temperature changes, and alot of textures. Just goes to show how sensory issues are vastly different to every individual autistic person. :)

An agressive lip scrub like this feels like sandpaper, hell naw 😩
I’ve found that using semi-thick, crystalized honey does the job for me, the one that is creamy and not like rock candy. The sugar particles are gentler and melt with the generated warmth, so it is a nicer experience and it also tastes good 😋 also cheaper

Okay this is me when i try to use a lip scrub so instead I just put on a bunch of aquaphor and then once it's soaked in I can rub the dry skin away with either my fingertips or a soft face towel depending on how much sensory imput I can tolerate. Towel is quicker but more intense. Fingertips are softer but take lonher, so each has a pro and a con

Use a gentle glycolic acid (like 5 percent or less)! It'll help decrust your lips and it just feels wet and a little slippy if that's an okay sensation--I found it pretty pleasant and it doesnt tear up your skin like scrubs do, I heard a dermatologist on youtube recommend it the other day (Dr. Idriss, she's very fun AND science-based, its awesome)

JUST USE A TOOTHBRUSH MY LOVE 😭❤️ or they have silicone lip scrubber things that look like toothbrushes that are softer! If you want, out a lip mask on first to soften the crusties and THEN use the scrubber. Probably better than grit!

I like some lip glosses but I have 2 issues with it- it makes me want to chew on my lip and hair will get stuck to it if there a breeze or something.
Once I was going to get a shopping cart at an Aldi store and a lady offered me her cart (it takes a quarter to get a cart from the cart return) but I just couldn't respond because I had hair blowing in my face and sticking to my lip so I was too busy freaking out 😢 I hope she doesn't think I snubbed her or something.

It sounds like your lips are probably dry, so a moisturising lip balm might be better for them (and also be a much more pleasant texture!).
