    I genuinely love that, 6 months later, with the official release behind them and three times as many reviews as what was shown in this video, it still holds a 98% positive review score. Hades is a masterpiece of a game and everyone involved in the project should be immensely proud of the work they have produced.

    • @FeamT
      @FeamT 4 роки тому +31

      11 months later - over 8 times the reviews, *still 98%.* And it's not going to change.
      The game got nearly as many reviews in the last month (Jan 21) as it had total reviews in this video, and even when counting only those recent reviews, it's still 98%. About as close to perfect as you can get on Steam!

    • @d0x360

      Why wouldn't it hold a high score? People only review bomb when something is legitimately bad or when a company does something legitimately bad or changes a game post launch in a large and legitimately bad way.
      The reason people review bomb is because they literally have no other way of showing how they feel. They can't vote with their wallets if they already bought the game and the company does something shady.
      No twitter is not a valid avenue because the developers will not see 99% of the messages but if someone changes their review to negative then they will notice and know why people are upset... Plus review bombs are kept separate in steam and don't count towards the overall score of a game. They even show you a nice timeline of rveiew scores so if it was bombed you know the dates to check so you can find out why.

      A year on, I think the importance of this comment can't be undersold - everything about what I hear here suggests that they care about making money as a *means*, to the end of creating worthwhile, enjoyable, high-quality games. More than anything, it seems that that's the indispensible part of the equation for them. I don't know how often I could say that for another company.

    I don't know if it's something about relative camera positioning, or something about the folks being interviewed or the way they're saying it, but for this series, and only this series, whenever there's been one of the fixed-camera, staff-member-talks-to the-camera/viewers segments, I've found myself nodding along involuntarily. Now, specifically, I wasn't nodding to myself, in an 'oh, that makes sense' sort of way - I was nodding like it was a conversation in real life, in exactly the same way I'd nod at certain points in a statement to show the person I was talking to that I was still listening, but without interrupting. This is, as far as I can remember, the only work during which I've noticed myself doing anything of the sort.
    Am I just going nuts, or has anybody else had that kind of reaction?

      Part of it is the angle and direct eye contact, part of it is that the parts shown are when the people interviewed seem to be at their most comfortable and confident. The interview questions aren't shown and we occasionally hear the interviewer's reaction, but overall it's a very clever way to make you feel more connected and 'in the moment'. The overarching 'storytelling' style of the documentary focuses a lot on having the studio and its members tell the viewer its processes and thoughts. The most commentary we get from the commentary creators are silent text slides, so the documentary overall feels more like we, the viewer, are in a direct conversation with the studio.

    In my view, the reason why games receive the "overwhelmingly positive" review score is this: players form a mental model of the game when watching the trailer, reading the description, looking at screenshots, etc. Their mental model informs them how the game might be enjoyable to play, thus setting the expectations. Games with high ratings a) meet these expectations, and b) filter out the players who might not find the game enjoyable.

    • @johnmiller446
      @johnmiller446 4 роки тому +10

      But what about games with bad user-reviews? When games get bad reviews, it is because the player's expectations (created by their initial mental model of the game) were not met. This is not always because the quality was bad. Instead, it could be that their initial mental model was too far off from reality. But what happens when a genuinely low quality game is able to convey an accurate mental model to potential buyers? Well... then nobody will buy the game because they can clearly see that it is bad.

    Great series around Supergiant, it's very special to be able to see a glimpse of behind the scenes from one of your favorite devs.
    Just recently watched the previous Developing Hell videos, since I wanted to play the game for myself before watching any footage whatsoever. It's amazing to see the progress and different issues during different times of the early access development and makes me appreciate the game even more.

    I came to UA-cam hoping at the very least to find a few small behind the scenes clips. But OH MY GOD there has been basically an entire documentary crew filming the development of this game from start to finish! Much more here than I was expecting!

    Not gonna lie? I would NEVER have bought Hades based only on the trailers and what I was seeing on steam!! It looked like a lifeless mechanics heavy grind based on the trailers alone.
    I bought it because the fan community made it very clear that it had a super good narrative, deep characters and gameplay that was actually fun. If it weren't for the transformative fandom fans singing it's praises, and the fanart community slipping onto my timeline/dash I would never have played it, but I utterly adore it now!!
    Honestly curious how much word of mouth/having a visible and active fan community did for Hades.

    What it means Amir? I was on the game since day one on the Epic Games Store because I loved every single experience you guys at Supergiant crafted for us fans since your beginning. You guys put your heart and soul in every single game and it's so obvious even without the wonderful NoClip docs that give us a small window into the creation of these gems. Thank you Supergiant for putting your all every time and thank you Noclip for giving us a glimpse at the humanity of one of my favorite developers ever.

    I was really excited for Hades to come to Steam. I thought the initial trailer looked really cool, but I don't have the Epic Games Launcher, so I bought the game on Steam pretty much as soon as I could. Haven't beaten a run yet, but it's definitely a fun game.

    Even though I don't use the Epic store & never will, I still think Supergiant's strategy of waiting to release on Steam was smart. Early Access on Steam is invaluable for roguelikes & roguelites that need a lot of balance tuning, as well as big games with large worlds & playable combos (like Baldurs Gate 3) that will inevitably have bugs. However, the Steam audience WILL RATE & REVIEW an EA game as if it's a release version, & so some games don't fare well if they launch on Steam EA too early. The expectations for Supergiant games are high now & since they hadn't done any prior rogue-style games (AFAIK?) they prob were wise to keep it off Steam until they knew the core gameplay & progression were solid.
    Personally I had no interest in the game initially (for some reason, I thought it would be more like Binding of Isaac, which is a great game just not to my taste). I typically prefer tactical & card games like Slay the Spire, Hearthstone, etc. but when I downloaded Hades finally when it went on sale on Switch, I absolutely loved it. I'm usually not into "button-masher" games, but this is def not that. If you can play Dead Cells, this will be up your alley

Wow. Already more than 100 tries and I'm still on it with great pleasure. Just, awesome. Keep it up guys, you rock!

    Thank you for this entry to the saga of Hades and Supergiant games. I will definitely buy it whenever it shows up on consoles.
    And as an aside, it boggles the mind on just how good and consistent they have been in their ability to create stylized aesthetics which are not only different from game to game (as well as be distinctive in a sea of stylized games) but to do it successfully without straying into the realm of traditional realism.

    Does anyone happen to know what software they are using when going over iterations of art pieces? It looks like they're using Google Drive for spreadsheets, but then there is a sort of "feed" tool that they seemingly use for sharing artwork updates, or being able to see a chronological view of art updates. I would love to know what tool this is!
    Also, this segment was superb, kudos to Noclip for the amazing reporting, and of course to Supergiant for their immense love of what they do!

It's been an incredible story to watch unfold since Greg left Gamespot (let alone leave EA to join Supergiant).
