One of the many many things I love about this show is how real the characters feel. It's clear that the writers built the characters around the actors, because there are so many parallels between character and actor in this show, for example: Edvin who plays Wilhelm has said on multiple occasions that he struggles with anxiety, which is why Wilhelm has it and it's portrayed so accurately. Frida who plays Sara has ADHD and Aspergers, so it's believable that Sara would have it. Omar who plays Simon is a singer in real life, which may be why Simon likes music so much. I also really like how realistic the story is compared to other LGBTQ+ shows. The main characters are just characters that happen to be queer, but also have actual personalities. We don't often see characters that are completely out of the closet and accepted by their families before the show even starts. It's very realistic for a show taking place in Sweden, we're a very LGBTQ-friendly country. As someone who's been openly bisexual in Sweden for many years now, my experience is the same as Simon's, which is that no one cares about your sexuality. It's a very good show, and I hope we'll get to see other shows similar to it in the future.
🤣 I enjoy your August's nickname. It fits him so well. The rowing discussion with Simon's friends is a good example of the story telling: there are different perspectives about their future in / out of town. The perspectives are both valid. It is most of the time true in the series: just multiple valid perspectives of 1 situation. I can see you have a cinematographic eye. The artistic team did a great job, enjoy. Also they play a lot with scene visual perspectives to illustrate a view, look if you see them maybe. I like your attachment to Felice. They make you feel, right. Interesting your theme want/weakness. Something like like "the means to reach your goals". What is acceptable or not to do in order to obtain what you want. I guess there is something there. The writer main theme is "How a restricted person (Wille) is able to love freely?" So yes there is something there. As a prince he is not allowed to love Simon. So it is a fight between what he wants and what he is allowed to. And Simon will endure Wille's restriction too then. Yes the show is special. Not black and white, not too easy or unrealistic, most grey, with a lot of mistakes, but with genuine feelings.
13:25 Yes, the writers and the actor Malte are excellent at showing the complexity and layers to August. His home life is crappy, so school is everything to him.
Oh I love your reactions. Malte is really a big puppy he plays the complexities of August so so well and his performance just keeps getting better. You love to hate this guy aha. The whole cast are fabulous actors and you’ll see as you go on their performances just get better and better. I watched YR before Heartstopper (i think it was on Netflix first) so I have to say watching it in that order was great because you get the gritty realism and then some comfort 💜 Cant wait to see you get through these episodes though. Esp season two 👀
I'm rewatching this one before I watch your E3-E4 video. I love the horror movie scene! I'm not sure if August sees them touch hands. It's hard to tell. But maybe he suspects or sees them glance at each other. 17:40 Felice is trying to live up to what her parents want her to be.
I love your reaction, great points that you observe immediately with the characters & dynamics. YRs is Def a lot more grittier than HS but BOTH shows are soo good in their own right and what they are trying to convey!! YRs is such a ride this season & next and am soo excited for your reactions to rest of the season, just BUCKLE UP!!😉. New Subbie for sure 🙌😌
Thank you so much, Eleaver!! And hear hear on both shows being so good in their own right! It was pretty much instant love with me and Heartstopper, and I can tell that YR is going to pretty much be the same.
I've been saying that Heartstopper is my comfort show. When the world is awful and I need some happiness, I watch Nick and Charlie fall in love again. YR is definitely bumpier. It doesn't all go smoothly for the characters. The writing and acting are just brilliant in this show. The chemistry between the characters, especially Wille and Simon, is fantastic. I have watched S1-S2 several times, (mostly in Swedish, but once in their English dub), but maybe not as many as I have Heartstopper. Just because of the roller coaster of emotions.
Yes... and I love it because the two shows are such easy watches. Not to say that they don't have gravity to them, but they aren't the kind where you feel drained afterwards and not want to go near them again for a while. At least Hearstopper- I shouldn't speak to YR since I've only seen 2 eps.
@@DavidvsFilm There's a bit more heartbreak in Young Royals but it's still so so good. Edvin and Omar are amazing as Wilhelm and Simon! There's more rainbows and unicorns in Heartstopper. I love both series! (And I can't wait for them to announce a release date for S2 of Heartstopper!)
Thank you, Christina! I think I am going to combine the next couple of episodes into one reaction (3&4, 5&6) so that I can make the videos longer (and cover more ground because I'm impatient haha)
I feel for them all. August reminds me of all the ways I cringe looking back at high school me. I am a reformed mean girl. I spent a fair amount of my 20s going back and apologizing to people I wronged. Or at least trying to change things when I saw the bullying/jerk behaviors. Most bullies have a back story. And it's hard to remember that these are kids playing at being adults. Nothing is etched in stone yet. That said the actor playing August is so good at being bad.
Such such great thoughts! And that was so good of you to do that. I'm sure it was a cathartic experience, and probably not easy. I am seeing more of his story now that I've watched the next two eps, but he still makes it really hard for me to like him lol
Hey friend! Hope all is Well! I hope you enjoy this serie! In swedish movies and stuff the things people say is what drives the whole thing - not so much what you see as in american tv shows and movies.. ” a man called..” ( i don’t remember what they call him in US- but tom Hanks play him , ) is a great example of that too ( from a swedish book and movie named: a man named Ove ❤️❤️ and sweden is beautiful if i might say so myself 🙂
Hello my sweet sweet friend in SWEDEN!! Yeah, 'A Man Named Otto' (though truth be told I had to look it up because I wasn't familiar with it until your reference :) I am loving this show. The scenery is just so beautiful, as well as the acting and storylines. Still really excited about it.
@@DavidvsFilm Otto!! That’s it! You should watch that! It’s a really beautiful story ❤️ ! Happy you like the Young Royals! I belive it’s fimed in and around Stocholm ( capitol city) but someone Will know that better than me 😅❤️
Impressive reaction video, David 👍. Everybody and their in-laws have commended the acting performances in this series. Wilhelm and Simon are at opposite ends of the social spectrum, and the story is a bit farfetched (what are the odds that they would ACTUALLY be classmates ??), but when watching Edvin and Omar’s facial expressions all disbelief magically suspends. Love your comments: to the point and not fawning. Keep it up !
Haha thanks, Thomas!!! Can't wait. "Buckle up" is synonymous, btw, with my absolute favorite expression regarding any movie or show: "Then all hell broke loose." That is all you have to say to get me to watch lol
I'd like more background on Simon's dad. What he did to the family must have been extremely bad. Simon obviously refuses to forgive him and seems to feel justified in taking advantage of him to get the beer or steal some meds, while the dad is painfully desperate to connect with his son again. Ah, the drama! 😉
The drama!! Lol. Yeah agreed, i want the scoop. Could be anything, really- cheating, abuse, crime. Then maybe he’s rehabilitated now, but it’s hard for Simon to forgive the things his dad did that defined his childhood.
Can I just say how much I love you instant dislike and annoyance for August..lol I can't stand him. I do appreciate them trying to give his character some complexity though but still all that doesn't give a person the right to act like a jerk face. I can't get over the chemistry between the 2 main characters the ending of this episode had me practically forgetting to breathe. I so can not wait to see you watch the rest of the season it seriously gets so good. Cause like you said it's a short season so there isn't alot of time but dam they really pack in the drama in the limited time.
Yes yes yes to ALL of this!! Great comment Melissa. I want to be the bigger person and look deep within when it comes to August, but he just makes it so difficult lol.
I know many people don’t know this but the term Aspergers is pretty problematic. The term was used by the nazis to differentiate between people with autism who are worthy of living in the society and who should get send to the KZ. So people shouldn’t use this term anymore because it literally just says who with autism is "smart enough to deserve to live".
This show is very very good and realistic. I love how Scandi countries pay attention to realistic details when they do TV shows and movies.
YES. 100% agree with this.

16:15 Yes, Wille gets panic attacks and has a lot of anxiety. He bites his fingers and rubs his chest and gets nauseated from anxiety.
Ahhh gotcha, thank you, Lynn!
@@DavidvsFilm anxiety brought on by his mother's expectations - "being a prince is a privilege, not a punishment."
So far I'm really liking the show. Thanks David for introducing it to me! 😊💚
