🤣Damn, when you put it like that...
Scream is part 1 of the Dystopia trilogy, which is about cyber-bullying, hateful comments and people losing themselves in the (fake) online world. It is mostly showing the victim's perspective of (cyber)bullying, comparing it to a medieval witch hunt and a burning at the stake. The tree is the tree of language, and it grows black fruit for every hurtful thing people say. Note also the hand gesture, it is the devil's horns introduced by Ronnie James Dio as a symbol for metal, but it originally was a gesture in the middle ages to ward off the evil eye, tying into the witch hunt theme. I really enjoy the music, it's rock mixed with EDM. Dreamcatcher are always very creative, and they are in their own genre by this point.
I'll rewatch w/this info in mind. Also, funny you say that b/c I read a comment that said "there are 3 types of kpop groups: boy group, girl group, dreamcatcher" lol thought that was interesting.
I am a bit late to the party, but welcome to InSomnia. You will love Dreamcatcher as they are adorable crackheads not that much controlled by their label, so they are pretty free to do what they want. On the other hand they have started off relatively poor and as a black sheep in Korea with their rock sound, but they are still alive and kicking.
Their videos tend to go pretty deep, so let meg give a little bit deeper background on this one:
Dystopia Trilogy: This trilogy talks about Cyberbullying and the power of language and how it can hurt someone if used in a negative way. It portrays their attempt at facing the Dystopian reality that is hidden in the world of social media. The center of the story is the tree of language that is turning black due to negativism after the curse of the evil language was released (depicted as opening Pandora's box in Scream) and the light provided by positive words fade out. The order of the title tracks is:
Scream (Hear no Evil) - happening in the Past - Fantasy vibes
Boca (Speak no Evil - Boca is the Spanish word for mouth) - Present timeline
Odd Eye (See no Evil) - Futuristic vibes M/V:
No some info in the M/V: The dancer with the mask on is reserving the spot for Handong. (stuck in China due to CoVid so she was neither here, nor in Boca, you have not seen her yet)
First you mostly see the members wearing white, that is their pure uncorrupted form and they gradually take on the black outfit after waking up to new world of hatred. The masks otherwise represent anonymity provided by social media. 6:52 is when Gahyeon breaks the container of the curse and negativism starts spreading (Explosion around the tree) It is also shown that this has happened some time in the past and negativism is ever since part of our society. (6:55 the ancient texts light up) 6:59 they point fingers at her for doing it. Similar to their other M/Vs the storytelling is not linear. In Scream the members are already wearing black but still asleep at the beginning 2:18. ("My covered eyes are stained with blood") 4:37 shows the loss of the white form. There is even a transitioning outfit with JiU with White on top of black 4:39. The purple fog with the evil words 4:49 is the curse basically, the scenes with purple with black outfit are the corrupted areas. We see how the spreading works in the bridge when Siyeon is still wearing white 7:07 while the other six members are already in black and around the now corrupted tree (purple) and they walk away from her wearing some black already and in 7:25 she wakes up wearing black. It is also important to note that one of the important message is how the "Please I don't want to scream" turns into Siyeon eventually singing "I just want to make you scream", meaning that basically negativism corrupts people turning them from victims to perpetrators. 7:33 "Dami: and one by one everyone becomes crazy". And finally now all of them wearing black walk away.
Once comment for Boca as well. You have liked the Too many angels dying now text by SuA. In Korea the suicide rate is pretty high due to social pressure and there were actually losses around her that unfortunate led to that specific line.
Seriously, thanks for this! I Read while using the time stamps, so now I've seen & understood things I didn't first time around. This group is really creeping up on me, for sure. Also, that's always tough when the lyrics are created from those types of things, but I typically expect as much with lines like that. 😮💨

Well... first: new sub here. I watched your video of Boca and now this.
Second: im crying all over. Let me explain: Im a metalhead aswell. I grew up listening to Queen, AC/DC, Megadeth and more. Then i switched to trash and power metal... And nowdays im into metalcore/deathcore. But one day i discovered dreamcatcher and trully fall in love with them. No just their music. They are amazing, for real.
The entire discography is interesting. They are a really mature group. Their stories and music are complex and the lyrics + lore aswell.
Jiu (the leader, the mom and my bias btw) is the girl with that "angelic and sweet voice". And yes, she is exactly like that as a person. She is lovely.
Sua (Main dancer btw) is imo, the chameleon of the group. There is nothing she cant do i think. She is one of the most incredible artist i ever saw, im not even kidding here. I mean, she is the main dancer, but... you gonna see, lets wait :D
Siyeon is the main vocalist. You'll never know what the h3ll is going on in her head (for real). She is crazy random and bizarre.
Handong is one of the most calm in the group but the funniest for sure. Her voice is really good. She was absent from the group for a whole year during Scream era... It was a really dark (sad, cause covid) time for everyone... And im not joking, there are several videos about it (you need to check Insomnicsy videos at some point).
Yoohyeon: she is a really bright person, clumsy as heck and the lead vocalist of the group. She lose her phone every single day and her interactions with Sua... are great.
Dami is in fact, the most calm member (but can match everyone in the group i think). She is the rapper, but she can really sing. Compose, write and produce songs. Her representative animal is a Panda (And she is a Panda for sure).
And Gahyeon, is the most loud member. She is really sweet and lovely. But holy moly she can be loud. She is crazy smart btw.
To know more about them, i can recommend the guide from 2021/2022... Or the series "This is..." from Insomnicsy channel (She has versions from 2020, 21, 22 and 23 from each member).
And the most important thing (IMO)... Their bond between them and InSomnia... I cant even explain. There is a specific video called like that... "the bond of Dreamcatcher and insomnia" and a song called "Reason" (WE, INSOMNIA, HAVE OUR OWN VERSION OF IT ASWELL, i recommend both).

Dreamcatcher’s videos are always wild! Scream is the second part of the Dystopia trilogy. This one is called Dystopia: tree of language, and the song is inspired by witch-hunts. “One day suddenly the light did not come. People forgot how to say good things” that’s the quote at the start of the video.
My interpretation of Scream: (main theme being cyberbullying)
The main thing we hear in the chorus "Please I don't want to scream" is either telling the hate to stop because it hurts or because if it doesn't stop they will take action. Then in the last chorus the lyrics say "I just wanna make you scream", this clearly means that they had enough. Also the "Devil eyes come" emphasizes that part specially, and the "Open your eyes" could be for the person spreading hate or for the person who receives hate to realize that they have to do something about it. Another thing they say during the rap parts is that the haters hide behind a "mask" (the screen in this case) to harm innocent people and blame them for whatever reason.

You gotta be careful, Dreamcatcher fans are called InSomnia for a reason. You'll find yourself unable to sleep/waking up in the middle of the night to watch their content, lol.
In all seriousness, thanks for checking out more of their music. They really do have a fantastic discography that you should just dive into.
As for the MV and Song meaning. Scream is the first part of the Dystopia Trilogy, which is often looked at as Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil, and See No Evil. This song specifically is from the perspective of someone who's on the receiving end of online bullying. They're being attacked for no reason and they're asking "who is this even for, it's not fun for me". There are also references to masked individuals ganging up on people which symbolizes the anonymous nature of the internet and how people feel embolden to do and say bad things because they believe their identity is hidden. The MV and dance use visual cues that bring to mind witch hunts where innocent women were set upon by mobs, persecuted, and then burned at the stake and these are used as a mirror for the online witch hunts that happen today. The flames surrounding Jiu, the burning embers floating across the screen, the screams, even the choreo where their hands look like their tied together above their head all allude to this imagery. It's a rather dark song and topic, which is pretty standard for Dreamcatcher.
Their songs come in three main thematic flavors, though they have many different other genres and types of songs spread throughout their discography. They're either discussing real issues, which is where most of their titles sit, encouraging people to be themselves and never back down from their dreams, or they're trying to make you cry with beautiful emotional ballads or songs that make you want to cry and headbang at the same time.

the dystopia trilogy exposed the 'dystopian' properties of the internet. scream addresses online hate.
their music varies a lot. the dystopia trilogy is a lot more electronic as to maintain the theme. the apocalypse trilogy(maison, vision, bon voyage) has a more industrial feel in its instrumentation. if you are into anime, they also have an ost called 'eclipse' which is in japanese.

Evanescence? I love Dreamcatcher so much if you'll listen to their recent albums those songs that are more rocky/-ish are divine e.g Rising. Aaah can't get enough of this group.

I like many K-pop groups but, other than the Kings BTS, Dreamcatcher is the only group I fully stan. I know and like every single song of theirs, they are incredibly talented and quite goofy IRL. Their story is also quite reminescent of BTS' early days.
