It's a very bad disease and can give the singer hoarse voice. My sister has it and it's treatable, but there are downhills. Like weight gaining, shorten of breath, heart problems and also voice problems.

They would have played the song together as a band and then re-recorded instruments like guitars and strings in isolation to get more into the detail of the parts, especially the vocal performances. It's not heavily layered at all compared to a lot of rock tracks, let alone pop. They can literally stack up hundreds of tracks these days. He just does some overlaps towards the end. Solid performance and this was done a few years before auto tune was out there. Auto tune came out in '98 I believe. Also, a little side fact. They tracked this Wales but re-recorded the drums for the entire album at a later date in an old swimming pool in London that was converted into a studio. I think it's called the pool! Check it out.

I doubt there is anyone who would lay down a vocal track first. As Ben says, most bands lay down a basic track, often with guide vocals.
