Hey friends, one quick note on terminology as some of you mentioned it in the comments: Tips 1&2 aren't real polyrhythms but triplets on top of quarter notes (kick/bass) and accented rythms (hihat). Sorry for mixing this up hope you still enjoy! :)
Miles you make it seem so simple but it isn’t - you really have mastered this insanely deep sequencer and produce outstanding work. Every day is a school day as they say - I’m still learning.
Hey ageezz, thank you so much! Really appreciate the great feedback - and you're right, everyday definitely is a school day as there's still so much to explore about these devices. Cheers! :)
After owning the Digitone for about 8 months, I went ahead and ordered myself the Digitakt today as I feel so much more comfortable using the Elektron workflow than I did when I first started. We appreciate these tutorials that you put out for us, they help a lot! 💪
Hey Jake, that's great and congrats! I think I used my Digitone also standalone for about the exact time before I pulled the trigger on the Digitakt - absolutely no regrets, they are a great team! :) Thanks for the great feedback and have fun with the new sampler!
Thank you so much for these tips. I now have both a Digitone and a Digitakt, and your tips help a great deal. My only suggestion is please, please keep them coming.
Definitely can confirm that these tips transfer to other Elektron gear like A4 and also sequencers like the OP-Z. The use of polymeter is really crucial to getting the most out of it and I like the way you simplify a few concrete things to try with the elektron seq as it can be too overwhelming for people when they try to tackle it all at once. Nice one! :)
Hey Ryan, thanks so much dude! Really appreciate that from you and thanks for confirming for the A4 and the OP-Z, that was actually the synth I had in mind when talking about non-Elektron gear. And polymeter is the right term (always mix this up with polyrythms) but I remember Andrew Huang explaining this in a video. 😁 Cheers buddy!
Thanks for the video, good stuff in here. Tip number two also works supernice, when you use an open hihat sample instead of more decay on every third step
The beauty of this superb tutorial is the sequencing principles can be transferred to multiple sequencer platforms, software or hardware. You have provided this community with wonderful knowledge :))
Hey Fin, what a great feedback - really appreciate it! Yes, I was hoping that some folks would also try it on other gear or in a DAW as I think it can be transferred very easy. So thanks a bunch for that feedback, wishing you a great day! 🙂🙏🏻
Hey brodykauff, well spotted! Untrue is one of my favourite records of all time. He recently released an EP (more in the ambient direction) which was really good!
So useful thank you very much! And great music your getting out of these boxes - really cool! Are you playing some festivals around germany this summer?
Thanks man mich appreciated! Don’t have any upcoming but I will definitely try to get some shows booked in for this year. Currently getting my new setup ready but once this is done new shows are definitely planned :)
Great ideas thank you. Had my DT since they were released and its the only sequencer I have where it's workflow sticks with me even if I don't use it for a month or so. Can't say that for some of my older Korg gear 😅
Hey ciavattas, that's great to hear and happy that you like this jam! Inspiring other musicians with my stuff always is the best thing. Thanks a bunch 🙏🏻
I definitely need to try the LFO riser trick and your workflow with the snare as well!! Thanks for taking time to share those tips with us buddy 🙏 So much value 🖤
Thanks a bunch Eric, appreciate you mate! And yeah love the LFO trick - the sequencer opens for so many cool possibilities. Cheers and hope you are well! :)
Hey Miles, danke für die tollen Tipps, sehr informativ und motivierend. Habe meine Synths dank dir wieder in die Hand genommen! midlife synthesist hat recht! The Proffessor
Vielen Dank dir Adil, das freut mich extrem zu hören. Wenn ich Leute mit meinen Videos inspirieren kann und sie deswegen wieder Musik machen, ist das wirklich das beste Kompliment. :) VIELEN Dank dir!!
Tips 1 & 2, neither of these are polyrhythms (or triplets either), they are accented rhythms. The ‘every 3rd trig’ trick would/could be loosely classed as a polyrhythm if it was 3 beats long and looped. Polyrhythms are great for hihat patterns, you could use the same method but make your final step for the HH’s on beat 5,6,7, 9 or 11, etc, and it’ll continually shift its place against the beat. Your tips themselves are cool, btw, just wanted to point out the terminology. 👍
Hey Carl, thanks for the hint and you have a good point here. I have to admit that I'm not so deep into music terminology and use some terms very loosely (including polyrhythms). So thanks for the correction!
@@MilesKvndra that’s cool, Miles… I’ve studied music theory for 30+ years and some terminology still confuses me! But, hopefully my point will help you to look more into polyrhythms at some point in the future. The same for triplets… they don’t fall easily into the Elektron sequencer because it’s generally set up for 16th note division, but you can shift/offset trigs to give you 8th note triplets which can sound great against regular 4/4 and 16ths. 👍
Another nice thing about the bass note every 3rd trigger is that this way you never have the problem of the bass hitting at the same time as the kick. I find it groovy also cause kick and bass are always punchy with no overlaps. This results in a clean low end before you even start EQing things :)
@@fabiosussetto6864 hey Fabio, you're right and very good thought! Getting punchy low end on the Digis without having the possibilities you have in a DAW can be tricky from time to time but that is a good tip. Cheers! :)
Superb!!! Love the riser and I’m sure all do. Perfect justification to two fantastic machines 👌👌👌 Why can’t the Digitakt or Digitone not accept midi cc 10 or 8 from an external synth on the elektron midi sequencer. It affects the cutoff and other parameters but not pan or stereo balance. Why ? My inserts are dual mono. Pls help
Hey Jo, thanks a bunch! Regarding your question I never tried the Digitone's inputs but I think when you're in dual mono then it is not possible to use panning as the inputs need to be set to stereo.
Thanks Dave! When you put down a trig every 3 trigs, it makes a slight difference in rythm if you start with this on trig 1, 2 or 3. Then you can choose what works best for your tracks. :) And yeah I tried it with 12 or other odd pattern lengths but it get's a little messed up when I play them together with patterns that have regular length settings (16/32/etc). So I rather stick to the regular length patterns
@@MilesKvndra would 48 steps make any difference? That would be 4x 12 step pattern length for the bass/hihats (with trigs every 3 steps) and 3x 16 steps for the kick drum (trigs every 4 steps). I haven't tried this but I think it would give you a 3/4 over 4/4 polyrhythm?
On your video time mark about 8.45 mnts in I notice that on the Digitone the tempo is slightly changing itself by a very small increments. Is this possible in the digitakt? I would love this 😊
Hey Andrew, this is due to the fact that the Digitone is receiving clock information via MIDI from the Digitakt and these are not always 100% accurate. So it's rather a glitch than something I set up on purpose. But agree that moving tempos would be a cool thing for experimentation 😁
Thanks a bunch! There might be more in the future as I still use the devices and thinking of building a new DAWless work stream in my studio for sound design, have had a lot of fun recently with that. :)
@@MilesKvndra its not a big deal but for new producers it could be a false start with polyrhythms that s all, doesn't make your video less superb and professional executed!
@@vestarecords3882 yeah totally agree that's why it's important to clarify. Many thanks for the hints and the great feedback, really appreciate that (and I learned some terminology from that as well 🙂). Great day to you!

Hi Can we sequence also 5 or 7 against 4 beat bass drum as polyrhythm?
Sure, you can try it! I think trial and error is the best thing in that regard
Great! For polyrhythms, how can you start from 2 or 3 step? What’s the difference with cutting to 12/16 the pattern length?
