In the American Civil war there were units on both sides which had uniforms heavily influenced by their individual heritage, fashion crazes or special requirements.
The Confederates had one unit that embraced their heritage to the extreme and that was company A of the 31st Virginia Militia.

What blows my mind is that wearing revolutionary war uniforms during the civil war would be like being shipped over to Vietnam in the late 60's to find some unit serving in civil war era uniforms.
Mild Turkey bit of a time difference there mate
Leo Slack you’re telling me 90 years and a century are that far apart?
Leo Slack also, the classic wool uniform and forage cap were used by the US military well into the 1870’s so technically there is no time difference at all
Mild Turkey I would say more like wearing a WW1 uniform
blue wolf in terms of technological development, sure. But there is only a 50 year gap between ww1 and Vietnam as opposed to the close to 90 year difference between the revolution and the civil war.

*Don’t forget the milk, honey!*
I would argue the civil was was the second revolution.
Juan Rodriguez what’s the war of 1887
@Brian Glover both the colonists and the confederates seceded because they wanted to govern themselves and be left alone. Both subsequently defended their homes from foreign invaders. Both fought against armies who were trying to force them back under a ruler at gunpoint. The only difference is, one was successful and the other was not. When you lay both side by side, there really isn't much difference.
@Brian Glover I deleted nothing. Edited, but not deleted. My argument being "invalid" is your opinion.
If the Morgan Guard were around today in a hypothetical second Civil War they’d probably be wearing WW2 uniforms?
Meanwhile the US Army is actually introducing new uniforms that are made to look like the old WWII Uniforms.
@@NikkyElso More like Korean War given the zeitgeist.
WW2 dress uniforms
I mean them use 90 or so year old unis vs now it would be like 75, 80 years old for ww2 uniforms
Hypothetically if some kind of combat were to happen at a national monument with ceremonial guards, soldiers would technically be fighting in their dress uniforms. Therefore they would be today's Morgan Guard.
Can you do a video about Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders?
They definitely should. After all, he is the manliest man in American history. The man took a shot to the chest, gave a 90 minute speech, and then went to a hospital in that exact order.

The contrast of 1770's fashion (clean-shaven men era) & 1860's fashion (bearded men era) is certainly turned heads. It's like a regiment which issued a civil war uniform during WW2
That's basically like wearing an American WWII uniform with a M1 helmet.
So a full American WWII uniform?
A great curiosity is that both the Confederates and the Unionists saw the Revolutionary Patriots of the Colonies as their Ancestors and while the Unionists wanted to continue with the union maintaining the legacy of the founding fathers, on the other hand the Confederates wanted their second independence and continue with the most original and established laws of the former colonies
It's so weird that this one specific, highly unique unit was involved in such an iconic event such as Harper's ferry. I mean, of all the units they could run into it was the one dressed up as minutemen.

America before Revolutionary war: We want our independence
Confederacy in 1861: We want our independence.
America: You dare oppose me mortal?
Also the Confederacy: We want to own other human beings as property
@@benn454 The south would have ended slavery on there own relatively soon as new machines came out to make slavery obsolete and farming easier, it was just needless killing, and probably would have became a preety powerful country later on.
@Brian Glover uhhh nope the colonies did belong to the UK.

also America: we want every state to be our property. (that includes the people to be our property)
@Sakkra101 There's one big difference though, and that's the central reason why they revolted. I find two respective Vice-Presidents have summed it up best:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
-Thomas Jefferson
"Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite ideas; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth."
Alexander H. STephens, Confederate Vice President

As a Rev War reenactor, I found this pretty interesting! I never would’ve known the uniforms from my time period, to some capacity, were used up to the civil war 😮👍

Can we get an episode of the Army of Northern Virginia (1861 - 1865)
No traitors
All the southern states were all treasonous scum! So funny how you hear all the southerns talk about how they love America but also love treasonous dirt bag scum of the confederacy. Idiots
In the Decades before the Civil War militia units were common across the States. Like the Morgans it was part Social, part marching in Parades showing off military drills and part Ethnic or Political in purpose. At the Battle of First Bull Run a Wisconsin regiment was fired upon by fellow Union troops because their pre-War uniform was grayish in color
Happy Independence Day from the Philippines
(July 4 was originally our independence day too )
Aw that's cool
Made by the Americans sorry we sticking June 12
The colour of uniforms was also influenced by the particular region the wearer served in the case of the South. Grey was more common in the east, with forces such as the Army of Northern Virginia, whilst butternut was more commonly seen in the west - such as in the Trans-Mississippi Theatre, worn by forces such as Earl Van Dorn's Army of the West and Sterling Price's Army of Missouri.
As mentioned, some Confederate units wore dark blue uniforms early on, at First Manassas some Union units actually wore grey uniforms, which also didn't help with the battlefield confusion.
you forgot that there are some confederates wearing the war of 1812 uniform as well
When you've got no money, you'll use anything you can
