Another thing - the Tianmen protest was among the first the first in a large wave of protests against Communist governments. If it had happened a few years later, after the Soviet Union, along with a ton of other Communist Parties, then the protesters may have been more confident, and the soldiers more hesitant. But in june 1989 I think none had fallen yet, and it gave the CCP a sense of security.

I served in the Army with a soldier who came from china, serving to earn his U.S. citizenship. I asked if he knew about Tank man and T. Square. He did not. I showed him pictures, videos and told this story. At first he didn't believe it. It's been completely censored so he genuinely never heard of it.
This is a very similar situation to how the protests in Romania started against the communism. Fortunately here, despite being ordered to shoot the civllians, the army rioted and sided with the people ❤️
