***VERY IMPORTANT*** I know you added premix “to be safe” but these are not like Yamaha’s etc. Suzuki CCI (which is their oil injection) directly lubricates crank bearings with oil from the pump. If you run premix only and don’t use the oil injection…or if the oil injection is not working…you can destroy the crank bearings. Suzuki has serious warnings that failure to provide proper oil through the crankcase injector ports on the CCI oil injection systems ON ALL MODELS (excluding TS/TM 400) will cause main bearing oil starvation. Just an FYI.
A friend of mine had a
Suzuki gp125 cafe racer and the guy he got it fro INSISTED that he always used the cci/oil pump, explaining why !!..,
He had ported it & lightened the crank quite a bit, it went ........
well...............
It went from low revs
till 6,000rpm okay then it spluttered a bit and BANG
6,000rpm till 10,500rpm was like a rocket or explosion 💥 👌🏼
On/off loads of great 2 stroke power band , and us being 17 years old, it was fast for what it was 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Great times 👌🏼👍🏽
Oil injection system are extremely misunderstood by people and hated in an extremely stereotypical way. I wonder why did the Big Four use them in the first place if 99% of people either break them, neglect them until they break, or remove them immediately, and how it was back in the heyday of two stroke power
Very interesting, thanks for the knowledge.
Crazy seeing all the bikes we grew up with from the little 50’s and 70’s then our move to the 125’s and 250’s as we got older.
Thanks for bringing back some of the great memories of growing up with these bikes.
Crazy, sometimes you pick up some of the old bikes from my youth. Makes me smile and remember why I became a motorcycle mechanic and all the fun I used to have getting them going...Awesome
Once the transmission oil leaks into the crank case, it travels, with the fuel/air/oil mixture into the cylinder via the transfer ports. No need to get past the rings. I've worked on engines that had oil leaking past the crank seals and also engines that leaked oil into the crank case between the case halves. When the latter happens, the cases are usually warped. Sometimes resealing the cases works, but usually the cases (in my own experience) have to be replaced or resurfaced (if the deformation is minimal). The engine sounds great. Doesn't sound like the crank seals are leaking and I didn't see any transmission oil sputtering out the baffle. Looks like you lucked out with this one. Let's hope that metal that was stuck in the baffle came from a different piston. Couldn't see it very well, but looked like it could have been the edge of a piston, just above the top ring. Hopefully the piston's already been replaced.
What a blast from my past . I owned a red one in the late 70s.
I would get 5 of my friends on it and we would cruse the trails and streets.
The gas tank cought on fire and it burned up on the side of the road.
Mine did have turn signals and tail light on it. Fond memories thanks.
Haha that's awesome. The seat is huge on this thing!
I had a Blue one just like this. Turn signals, empty license plate holder under the stop light and a chrome rack on the back. I remember Dear Old Dad and his mechanic friend taking the exhaust pipe off once, getting a nice hot fire going in the fireplace and placing the exhaust pipe on the fire to burn all the oil and carbon out.
It always smoked. The only time I ever got it to stop was one time when I made several "high speed" passes on a straight stretch of logging road.
Put hundreds of miles on the thing riding around in circles on our 1.5 acre lot.
Fond memories for sure....
Should take a torch to the muffler/baffle and then fill the exhaust with gas and set it on fire so it burns all the crap out..sounds sketchy I know but I’ve done it to a few 2 strokes and it works well
Haha I just took a heat gun and stuck it at the end of the pipe. I left it sit there until it quit smoking. Then I hit it a couple times and all the carbon comes out of the pipe.
My family has been in the motorcycle business for 1/2 a century, and a lot of times, when one of those mini bikes would come in, he could take a piece of all thread and run it down the pipe, and more often than not, a dirt dobber nest would be in there and after that, they would fire right up. Great watching these videos.
Love the variety of this channel big fan from Liverpool UK
My grandpa owned this bike and I have fond memories of riding in front and holding on to the handlebars while we cruised the back roads. It had a back tail light and blinkers.
@@yeahright302 I re-read my comment. I should have said "the exact same bike". I'm doubtful this one was his. Would have been cool though.
I just worked the set up the Mecum Auction in Glendale a few days ago and they had a couple of these in their collection of bikes that were gonna be auctioned. It was amazing getting to finally see some classics up close.
Maybe put (used) oil in to preserve the cylinder? But would've thought it would drain past rings over a year or less.
Yeah I had the same thought
I had a garbage find ryobi chainsaw that tipped on its side for a while and the fuel mix drained into the case since the piston was at TDC and the intake is lower than the bottom skirt of the piston.
It's in the instruction manual I believe, to put oil into cylinder before putting the bike into storage. But whoever did this on this bike went way over the top with the amount
@@juk-hw5lv yea, unfortunately no one does that anymore for the most part. I have some old cans of "fogger" oil which were meant for that.
I had a simalar issue with a 4 stroke Chinese engine. Looks like it had a bit too much oil in it, some older guys used to fill up the cylinders with oil if they were gonna sit for a long time so they didint seize up. But you never know!
Cool little bike! The back end had a taillight and those brackets on the grab bar are for rear turn signals (the front has holes for turn signals as well) ... Awesome find!
In England, blinkers were optional in 1970. Dunno about USA laws though... Back light unit needs replacing though.
If you can't get the original Suzuki unit, it shouldn't be too difficult to adapt something else to fit though.
Love this project...
Right up my street!
🙂👍
I had a Suzuki Grasshopper 50 when I was a kid. It was similar to that bike, and it was a 3 speed automatic. Great memories on that bike as a youngster.
Brings back some scary memories. Fun little bikes though, kinda awkward to get used to riding but definitely fun.
All the bikes from the seventies needed more top end gears. 4 was all you got. Yes if it just had one more gear it would be a lot better. Not an expensive repair that is good.
Someone must have thought it was seized with the exhaust being blocked so they added the oil to the top end lol
I had that exact machine when I was a kid, I used to drive it all over the race track, they are decently fast for a 90
Had a 1973 RV 125 . Rode the hell out of it . Beware . The kicker is weak be easy on it . Slam on the back break and it will roar leaving a big black streak in the road . These are rare , unfortunately I no longer have it . Keep that one .
I stopped at 12:30 to say that the oil does not go past the rings. I gets transferred thru the transfer ports just like the fuel and air does. You are correct that the only way oil can get in the engine is thru the crank seals.
If rings are bad oil can go past the rings if crank seal is bad.
That’s a pretty fancy breaker bar you’ve got there at 20:10 Joe. Never seen that one on the tool truck🤣😂
We had the RV 125. It had 5 gears. When I was a kid I had it going 70mph. That baffle in the muffler comes wrapped inbaffle material. That's the carbon you found. What's left of it. They came with tail lights, turn s8gnals, plate frame. Road legal bikes. Ours had a tach. The 125 was designed better. Carb behind the motor. Whole frame. They had buddy pegs to. It lasted a long time. We beat that thing. Lol. Battery not needed. Not battery ignition. It worked turn signals while idling at red lights.
Really nice vintage 2 stroke, just patch the seat; leave the original cover. Great Job!
Sick dude! I have a 74’ RV125 with a TS185 swap and it’s cool. They’re very VERY loud bikes though 😂.
Sickkkkk! Love the vids 2vintage
This engine looks exactly like the engine on my old Suzuki K50. I bought the bike in parts and assembled it when I was a kid. It really sparked my interest in working with bikes. Nice project! 👍
The holes on the grab handle are Indicator mounts, same on the front next to h/light.
i have a Suzuki RV200 from 2017.... its like looking at its granddaddy. great little fun machines
Had two of them on 50 acres with lots of trees and hills. The most fun I ever had on a motorcycle. They will climb anything if you get the front wheel on it. Good job.
Ohh I see a Suzuki RM right there, will that be the next project that we are gonna see in a video?😉
Yep
Great bike, I grew up on one. Picked up 3 more, hopefully will have time to restore one when I find time.
Been watching Joe's channel for years. It's my favorite because I'll see stuff go up on marketplace and just know I'm gonna see a video on it😂 live too close haha
1:10… indicators and possible mounting points for a rear rack
4:40… didn’t take you long to work that out did it…. I had to look at stock pics
WTH I’ve never seen a bike with a carb that’s placed inside the engine casing!
That oil shot was epic 🤣🤣🤣spat my juice out laughing 👍
What an amazing design for keeping the carb clean and away from the elements (dirt/water) I bet these things ran forever and very rarely broke down well over 4k miles on a minibike is damn near a million miles on a real motorcycle 🏍 🤣 it's kinda like dog-years 🤷♂️😝
That's a collectors item, hang on to that thing. Usually people who mainly offroad these things take the signals, rear light and mirrors off so they don't break them. The center case gasket or sealant probably isn't holding anymore, oil for the transmission side of the motor leaking through if that's just straight oil, or maybe like you said, the guy put oil down the hole to keep it from locking up, or it was locked up and he put oil in it.
Ken Kaplan probably has all the parts for that bike.
I had a pair of RV 225s in high school, rode the wheels of them. Tons of fun super easy to work on.got both with spare parts bike for $350.00. Enjoy, the oil pumps were only real issue. Not fast but fun and steady. Enjoy!
That thing has some COMPRESSION 😆 🤣 😂!!
That sure brings back childhood memories is that a 84 yz 80 in the background? I had 2 of the as a kid bought them for 75 dollars each the good old days
83 I think!
I saw the yz too, I had a yz 490 back in 88 when I was 14, happy days.
I have a 76 RV90 and parted out a 74 back in my youth that I found in the landfill. There is a light assembly and a luggage rack for the back that tied into the bolt holes on that black loop and into the shock studs. Turns signals were standard on the 76, but not sure on earlier models. Make sure you take the exhaust off and dump out that extra oil.
Loved the breaker bar lol green is a good color for them, green means go!!!
You could adjust the horn on the back of it at the horn adjuster. If it don't have one. You could adjust it on the center nut to give it more or less play to make it work again.
That was a cool episode. I love the old-school two strokes. When I was a kid, I had a 1979 Suzuki DS 100. I remember it had a square headlight. I've never seen any other dirt bikes with a square headlight. Anyway, I miss that thing!
1982 Yamaha 200 dirt bike had square headlight because I owned one in Canada
Good job that was definitely worth saving
That's the bike I learnt to ride on. It was a dual sport and did have a brake light and turn signals.
Check to see if the horn has an adjustment screw.
i never had any luck with 2 strokes. but like how you worked your way and figured it out. great job
Your killing it man:) awesome video 🤘🤙😎
I need to hunt one of those down this way and fix it up! Didn't know they existed! Wanted to share something you may already know that I just found out within the last 5 years and I've been servicing and repairing bikes for 35! Vessel screwdriver company (japan) makes a JIS #2 screwdriver that looks like the one you use a lot, but it has an impact device that turns counterclockwise 12 deg when you smack it with a hammer. Vessel Megaladora impacta is what it's called. I got the entire kit and it's life changing man. The JIS fits little bike's screw heads like this one 100 times better than a #2 Phillips. Amazon has the Vessel's for a really good price. I have a review up over on the channel if you wanna check em out. Great video man, gonna go on a hunt for one of these little bikes now!
Hi Joe, God I remember those things they were pretty cool and okay and deep sand cuz of the wide tires of course I actually had a trail 90 in the metallic green it was kind of like an Enduro but it also had street and trail years it had the switch on the left hand side of the upper crankcase you can put it in neutral and switch it either forward or backward and have gears high or low. The bike you have had turn signals it also had a rear taillight those two spots in the back are for the turn signals. I believe that one could have been street-legal also I know that mine was able to be street legal as most Enduros are. I also had a 500 twin older than that or maybe the same year it was a Titan experimental and it also had the high and low range switch on the crankcase and when I bought it when the guy told me it was experimental you know didn't really believe him but I have not found one like that again! That bike was so damn fast for a 500 in high gear I used to Pal around with a guy that had a Kawasaki 1000 Star Wars custom paint from the factory and I can tell you he could not run away from me and top-end. Anyway Joe thanks so much for the video it brings back so many memories. If indeed you ever run across that Titan 500 in the same metallic green with a high low gear switch on it you better grab it and hold onto it.
very nice video! here in Argentina u can buy a chinease copy of that bike, its called Skyteam RV 125, 4t. They are cheap and has exactly the same format, but less quality, sure. in the sand they have the stability of a quad, super fun.
Neat little bike. These and Honda trail bikes are fun. It would be cool if it had all it's lights.
Great lil find there. Seems to run pretty good. Great job bud!!
That’s a really neat bike, I like how the gas tank is hidden under the seat
I had one of those back in the early 70s as a young kid. Rode the thing like crazy. Never let me down and it was good in mud lol
Hydro locked, happens. Watch the stator, had one of them that went through them yearly. I may still have a replacement seat cover for one of those big awkward seats in my shop if so I'll send it to ya. Haven't seen one since.... great job.
A kid down the street had that exact bike back in the early 90's, it was just as ridiculous back then as it is now lol
Dang I have always wanted an RV 90. If you ever think about selling let me know. Great video as always
My uncle bought one just like it when I was a kid in 72.they came street legal with turn signals and everything.
I always learn a lot from your videos man. Love the channel. Keep up the great work 👍🏻
Thanks for watching man!
Big fan from Toronto ontario!!
Turn signals were part of tail light assembly. The holes your referenced on the back are for a rack that goes there.
You take case apart, replace screws with 8mm headed bolts. You won't regret it.
Thats a awesome looking bike, do you still have the atc 250r? Have you thought about picking up a 85-86 liquid cooled 250r atc? I'm a big 3 wheeler guy but love all the bikes you get, it's nice seeing a normal guy buying and fixing these things.
This guy is awesome
we used to pour oil into the cylinder via the spark plug hole to prevent the internal parts from corrosion during long periods of not using... nice of the mouse to provide extra air filtering
The oil pump lubes the lower bearings.
Make sure that operates or youll melt the bearings. Like a chainsaw
Not just the piston
Hahaha crackin little bike joe great job on the diagnosis I could sleep on that seat lol great video mate loving this channel take care buddy and all the best 🔧🔧🔧👍👌🏍🏍
I just sold my 1972 rv90 last year, as always instant regret. New coil and de coked pipe helps. That paint looks fantastic! Mine was flat black so I painted it gold and silver edit...my clutch was slipping too, after 2 oil changes it got much better, maybe had conventional oil in the plates from prevoius owner
It appears the oil injection pump leaked by the check valve and filled the crankcase with oil, either that or too much oil in the trans case will do the same. Try pulling the cylinder head off and see what is going on. There will be a large o-ring sealing the rotary valve case inside the clutch case, if it is leaking, then gear oil gets in, same with crank seal behind the rotary valve. Easier than it sounds to reseal it! You may need to pull the engine to dump the oil from the crankcase so it'll turn over. Use a propane or map gas torch to burn the crud off the baffle & spark arrester.
Great video, not much to those. Thanks Joe!
That is a cool little bike, would be a fun little trail bike.
so way back in the 80s we used to get this issue with 2cycle suzukis with simular motors , gp100 gp125 gp175
the burned oil collects in the exhaust packing and eventually blocks it up , causing the issues you see ,
we used to take the exhausts and put them on a fire and let them heat up and burn all the oil off , and then just re-fit them and go tear up the trails again
Great job as usual! Love your vids brother!
Great vid!!, good job, Joe!!
I don’t remember this bike from Suzuki back at that time the big deal was Honda Trail 70 and 90 . I went from a 3 1 1/2 horse mini bike to a RM 100 .
The big issue is that all that oil was totally filthy. That doesn't happen in 2-strokes. Use once and burn it away. Mysterious stuff... The clean oil looks like gearbox oil. (I'm just guessing)... So I was wrong. A fine bit of detective work, feller.
Another great video for me to watch in the uk. I look forward to every video that comes out especially the will it run one…. Keep up the good work. Absolutely amazing channel 👍👍
Best way to clean a pipe is fire up the burn barrel or bbq grill and get a good hot fire going and put the pipe in the bed of coals . 24 hours later tap all around the pipe and blow sir both directions to get the loose stuff out and high heat black paint and you have a new pipe .
just wild !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i had one lots of fun went everywhere !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haven’t seen one of these bikes in Australia. Nice ! Has fat tyres good for the beach very cool indeed.
I just finished my wr400f supermoto. 1999 model , taking the klx450r for registration check called pink slip $40 they check turn signals brakes etc
I absolutely love ur content. Teacher for sure
thats a wicked old unit! just made me look for one in my area! sadly cant find any :(
Thoses are fun bikes back in high school I use to have a RV125 Suzuki oil resovor is under the seat along whit the gas tank
Great video
Wow! That is really cool. If we could rewind time.
It does want another gear, always drove me nuts, still went plenty fast for trail riding.
Need to see the peacock/fuel lines and how they’re ran. I have one that someone previously messed with and have no idea how to hook any of it back up
Love it! i had one of these when i was a kid, it was so fun!, love what you do in your video's keep up the good work.
When l was 18/19 l had a t25Or
my brother inlaw sold it to me
for £200, l also removed the
Baffle & jammed a cork bung
leaned it up right & filled it with
fuel/ gas. Next day l poured a
little gas out blocked it up again
& gave it a good shake , after a
Clean up( it was pretty messy) l
took it for a road test god you
could not see behind you for a
few miles , but it ran better
until the next problem cropped
up , l now ride a GSX 1400 k8
Oh my old bike was a T250J
not a T250R😱
The oil is causing hydrolock, the oil can not be compressed like air, which most likely caused plug gap to close.
I'm not jealous, I'm not jealous, I'm not jealous. I SAID IM NOT JEALOUS 😃😃😃😃😹. This is awesome
OMG that thing was a little rough good job it was definitely worth fixing love your channel keep up the good work
i txt u on a diff vid..but i have a 1975 RV 90...mine is complete mint....but has been sittin in polebarn for over 30 years...sittin next to my 1974 Honda Trail 70..which is complete and very mint original cond
Love your chanel!
Thanks for watching!
Sounds really good
There was no air filter at all.just the metal mesh that keeps the filter from collapsing.
I love these bikes. I have a 73 and a 76
Great videos hope you get your hands on some Honda ct70s in the future to fix👍👍👈
Nice video mate, good to see your working on bikes again.
What a cool bike huge seat Super comfy big tires smooth and cool.pretly advanced for a 1972 eh
