The tail light is upside down. The clear spot is supposed to go down it reflects off the chrome fender and lights up the license plate. God forbid you get pulled over on this speed demon and the Police can't read the plate. lol I had 3 of these, the 50cc the 70cc and the 90cc 1974-77 Joe, that was funny Jaden was doing the walk of shame up the driveway, She is going to kill you! lol :)
Wow that was my very 1st dirt bike also. Mine was a 1970 and had only front shocks. I was 11 yes old. I rode the wheels off that thing. And it brings back a ton of memories. I especially remember having to share it with my 5 year yonger little brother. It was a blast for years.
I watch your Chanel a lot. Find myself wanting to reach in and give a helping hand but that be a long reach as I'm in Florida. So I go back out in my shop work on stuff I have collected from here. Now I just finished re-doing the top end on a 03 kfx 400 I recently aquired.acquired. I really enjoy it.
I got a Z50 the first year Honda brought this bike to market I believe 1968. Rode the tires literally right off the rims, fine piece of engineering that even a teenager couldn't wear out!
Love rebuilding the old monkey bikes, always a ton of family history attached to them. Done several, lot of fun to fix. Did one in January for an old farmer down the road, finished it up, he and his grandson came to pick it up. When it fired up, he was very emotional. Grandson rode it home. See him about every weekend out riding it at his place. Warms the heart...
Cool bike the Z50, I think you put the rear light on upside down and the headlight needs the lens lining up too apart from that a great job putting it back on the 'road' , keep up the great work 👍😎
The first dirt bike I ever rode was a 1977 z50! My friend, Blair, who only came around every other weekend to visit his dad, had one, and we'd ride it up and down the driveway for hours. It sparked a love affair with bikes that still persists to this day over 40 years later. 🥰
i've rode this baby 34 years ago, back in the 90s there were a motorcycle rent shop nearby they had a Honda Z50 for rent which we used to call it "Baby Honda" i also have lots of memories with that cute bike :) they were offering Honda 100S, Honda 100, Honda 70, Honda Z50, and "Boxer" with pedals (a bicycle with engine) Thank you for sending me back to the 90s :)
I had one of those. My Honda Z50A was blue with the chrome fenders. Gave it to my sister when I got a Yamaha DT360. Was stolen twice. Got it back the first time, but no luck the second. Was a fun bike. I had friends that had Trail Hoppers, YZ80's and XR75s and we used to ride around the neighborhood at night, trying not to be seen by the police. I have a lot of fond memories of those days. Honda sold them with 2 different carb. slides and also a restrictor plate in the exhaust system. The plate was removed and the better slide installed for better performance. Whoop!
bless her, I remember my brother trying to teach me and on my first run, when he said brake, i opened the throttle and went straight through someone's gates!!! From then on there were no problems of fear!!!
I just started my 78 z50 today. It's been in the garage for 23 years. I added an electronic ignition and new carb. *IT LIVES !* The tires are cracked but the headlight works.
I started riding on a 1968 or 69 hardtail z50 that was burgundy and silver. I honestly was no more than 3 yo. Believe it or not but it's true. I'm now 54. I would love to have it back. Unlike some people, I'm not going to pick your work. You do a good job and I hope that you are making a living working on motorcycles. Great job and keep finding the old ones.
I learned to ride on one of these when I was 4 or 5. My grandfather kept it well into my late teens and I road it on occasion just for kicks. Defiantly brings back great memories!! R.I.P grandpa
Huge credit to your wife for trying. The Z50 was the cool thing to have when I was a kid. Great video and keep up the good work. You're giving me incentive to get back to work on my 65 Honda 305 Dream.
Love these little bikes think the back light is on upside down it's clear at the bottom to illuminate a registration plate if it's road legal love your content 👌
My first bike (at only 6 year old) was a Honda 1972 mini trail 50 previous model to the Honda Z50 (without rear suspension) great bike, then got a Yamaha 1979 YZ80F great experience growing up👍👍👍👍
I was gifted a 1976 Z50. It had been sitting for years. My grandson and I removed, drained and rinsed the tank, cleaned the carb....used same old gaskets, filed and set points, cleaned/gapped the plug, added fresh gas and vroom! It smoked but after a few rides the smoke stopped. Stuck rings. It looks ratty but Honda build quality is remarkable. Dave in Omaha
I have a 72 in need of a rebuild, wish I had a friend like you haha. This was really interesting to watch and gives me an idea of the work involved in breaking down and rebuilding one of these.
Jade is a good sport. "You know I don't have the balance for this". Filmed her walk up the drive. If that was my wife, much editing would be needed. Thanks for joining Jade. And engine rebuild was informative as usual.
I agree with other poster. It's down on power. Even though it's a 50 it should have reved up more. Nice vid. I would have given an arm to have one of these as a kid.
I’ve seen, in the aftermarket, a 75 cc engine with a 4 speed for $300 or so. It’s bolt in. The after market parts availability is huge. You could build one completely with all aftermarket parts. I gave mine to my grandson. He loves it. We talk about blasting it apart and restoring but have yet to do it. I ride a 2005 V-max. Quite a contrast. Fun. Dave in Omaha
I learned how to ride when I was 6 years old and it was a 70s model painted like a Harley Davidson in blue metal flake, and also owned a orange and black 79 z50,also learned how to do a rebuild on it too, seeing this makes it feel like it was yesterday
Oh nooooo Jade's walk of shame! hahaha Joe this looks bad on you that you didn't take time to show her how to ride one of those. pretty funny I enjoyed it.
I love all your work on these bikes man, you're really good at all of what you're doing, and you've provided hours of entertainment to me and a better understanding of all things mechanical with all your different projects, but I've got to be honest with you. You're wife has been absolutely freaking adorable in this video. You guys are beyond cute.
My friends little brother used to have one of these so much fun we'd leave our big bike to play on them.I guess just like they do know with the pit bikes, not sure what it is about little bikes but man they are fun another great video Joe keep them coming please.
What is interesting to think about, is that of all the bikes and ATV’s Joe has repaired. This Z-50 will still be in the shape it is right now 200 yrs from now because of its rarity, and small size, and it is easily stored, displayed and collected.
I have to say that I understand your wife's feelings with bikes. My wife took her first harley Sportster (used) out and came to a stop but she forgot to put her feet down. Lol it was like a slow motion fall.
Awesome video I was just telling my dad how I watch all your videos in about little Vinny I didn't realize you were married now we get to see the misses lol awesome video as always brother you demand I appreciate your videos
Do you know why 3 of the cylinder head nuts are domed and one isn't? My first bike was a Honda SS50 1975 bike same engine, and the head nuts was the same as this lovely little bike. Great vid 2vintage. I was 16 when I had my SS50 back in 1978, I'm now 61 and my ride now is a Honda NC750x
Would a loose timing chain have something to do with one of these not wanting to start got good spark and fuel but the timing chain is loose and I've got the tensioner screw maxed out
My brother and I both learned on a Honda 50. We thought it was a 77, but must have been a 79 without the lights and chrome. He went in half-sies with my dad and at dealer a year model later. I think it was about $800 then. We rode it until about 1990 when I was 12 and it stopped running. sold if for basically nothing in about 1998. The thing always fired up after a kick or 2 growing up though. good stuff.
Those screws on the clutch, probably all the case screws too, they're probably JIS - I think that's Japanese Industrial Standard or something like that, if you try to use s standard American Phillips #2 or #3 you're just going to strip them right out, they almost have little wings on the screwdriver next to the + of the Phillips slot. NEED a set of JIS drivers!!
Good work on that little z ive been watching for a few years you are becoming a great mechanic what do hate working on most heads and valve train or bottom ends just curious
Hey Joe I am not sure if you are aware but the Phillips looking screws that are on most Japanese bikes are not actually Phillips they are JIS (.Japanese industrial stantard) screws and that is why most Japanese bikes have these screws rounded off cause we have all used Phillips screw drivers to take these screws out and that is what causes these screws to round off cause Phillips screw drivers and bits dont fit these screws correctly. If you go on Amazon or many motorcycle web sites you can order the correct JIS screw drivers and bits that will correctly fit these screws and mostly eliminate this from happening.
It sounds very sluggish, I feel like it should Rev up a little faster than that. It sounds restricted somewhere. Other than that, cool video Joe 👍. The Jade part of the video was very entertaining 😄. Ewok George. My brother had the same kind of dog. He liked to sit on people's feet if you were sitting in a chair, it was odd. Anyways keep up the great content bro.
i still have 1974 Honda Trail 70...mint complete original...my brother burned out the auto clutch..and it has sat fir 35+ years...i need to get it goin...its the hit metallic orange...low low miles...i used to ride the RV 90 and the Trail 70 as a boy
Tail light looks like it is upside down. The clear part is supposed to face down to illuminate the license plate. Good rebuild. Classic!
I do agree with you there
you are correct
@@mikes1097I have a 1977 z50 honda that dis not run can you please halp me
The headlight lense looks crooked also but hey, the rebuild was awesome

This was my first dirt bike I was four!! Now I'm 40!! Bringing back memories thanks!
this was my first bike too!! i wish i still had it.
My neighbor had this bike, and I had the Elsinore 50. I would smoke him, but they were both fun as heck to ride!

here in finland this was my first street bike
As much as the engine build was awesome..
Jade trying to ride the bike was hilarious in a good way 😆
It has such a cute little piston, I could use it as a keychain for my Himalayan! Classic little bike, a true vintage machine
that's a really nice bike and looks excellent shape for the year.
I'm learning motorcycles' workings, so such videos are very helpful for me. Many things I see here are totally new for me.

I had a blue 1971 Honda fifty. My first dirt bike LOL It was a fun bike for a child. woo hoo! When you strip those splines that when you weld it LOL.

Jade is a good sport. You should be appreciative of her support and patience.
Real cool little Honda. Grew up riding these with friends. Good job bringing her back. One suggestion, use the oem carb if they have it.
Pretty sure the clear part of the tail light faces down as a plate light
nice work! I had a '68 when I was 7. dang those things are tiny, hold that camera still wifey! Good times!
your pup looks like a Ewoke love it🐕.
great job thanks for sharing and i hope the owner has a great time with. take care and have a great day

I love these videos!
Love the banter/ teasing, very funny.👍
For real how are the new ones so much faster? That one is as fresh as you can get and there is a major difference.
Loved the break in process just give it the beans
I believe that shift star is supposed to be loose, maybe not as loose as it was but not tight either. Good Video!

Good job. Taillight is upside down. The clear lense is meant to light up license plate
the really cool sound of the 50cc and Trail 70cc motor is unmistakebly Honda
Joe, you came by like The Flash!
A whopping 12 1/2 mph.
LOL Jade is so cute. Great build man.
Lol..she was great for trying atleast..lol..Great vid...b safe.peace..
gotta teach her how to ride George is so cute what kind of dog is he and all you gotta do is clean the rims now

Go Jade. You have to have a go at riding Jade. It's great fun.
She's a real powerhouse for sure. 😋
I know it could be pretty scary splitting cases but good job bud 👍🏻 (oh flip the taillight it's on upside down).
I had to split the case on my 1972 Honda CL 100 to replace the kick start on it. Crazy design.

Needs fuel mixture adjusting, probably getting to much air due to the open filter as they are normally very restricted with standard airbox.
The kickstarter is the most abused part on the bike. It should be much easier to replace. I've had to do a couple. It sucks. Gotta love engineers.
Pulled it out of the gear, no choice now. Sucks, enjoy. Great vid. Z50s suck to fix.
Impact driver is the best way to undo stubborn screws. I think you should buy one or use your Bosch drill.
