    These will come in handy since people here in Japan tend to throw kicks quite often. Best videos on self defense on UA-cam.

    I like to move while I do the blocks with the arms. It can take some power and angle off the kicks, and that makes them easier for me. I think it is a great idea to present a complete set of defense against kicks, it gives a basis from which that section of combat can be developed (finding variations that you prefer, adding new techniques you learn, etc) I completely disagree with using these techniques for self defense only, they should be used for sparring too :p Happy Christmas!! : )

      Thanks for the comment, Shinwoo K. Indeed, we have covered some basic kick blocks and counters (here: ua-cam.com/video/wNQa9-L25jA/v-deo.html) in which we add a step to absorb the impact and land your counter-strike. More variants to come in the future, including kick catches. And yes, sparring is an essential tool to better prepare for self-defense, while also being lots of fun. We just mean you shouldn't go beat people up with your martial arts skills. Thanks for watching, lots more good stuff to come!

    The blocks are very similar to what I teach. The instruction is clear and succinct so good job. My only gripe is you do not show the blocks working against full speed powerful kicks. This seems to be an issue with all of your videos. Do the slow descriptions then show things full speed. Otherwise some people will dismiss your stuff as not practical. I know it is practical but others might not.

    Very good and similar to what I do. Just a few thoughts. Our groin attack is more like the inside thigh kick, but to the groin and is very fast. I tend to pivot the front leg if I can, or more likely, block with a knife-hand with the posterior (right hand in this case) hand because of the need to be very fast. I also tend to block the rear leg front kick with the right hand too so I can expose the back as you do with your block of the front leg front kick rather than using Chi Sao. I realize in real action, everything may need to be modified :-) Thank you!

    • @EffectiveMartialArts
      @EffectiveMartialArts  7 років тому

      Those are all valid strategies, Docinaplane. Indeed in action, more than one technique can be used to block the same attack, and there are many possible variants that can be used for those attacks. The idea is simply to provide a base of techniques beginners can practice in these videos, and gradually bring them to be able to improvise, and defend themselves effectively in a real situation.
      Lots of good stuff planned for you guys in 2017, stay tuned!

    I like the block for the groin kick, and the low roundhouse.
    I can't see the arms, having enough power to, block the high kicks. I might be interested in catching the high kicks to discourage high kicks and using a low kick.
    To hurt the leg, they might be standing on.
    The kick to the inside of the thigh, at the end. The last offensive kick.
    Might leave you off balance if you step back in that way? I don't know if it might be possible to spring back, in a different way?
    I am starting to get a bug for martial arts! I have been described as being self trained but, I believe. I have, I have picked up a few tricks.
    All over Devon! And through wrestling in back yards. All over South West England! Plus, I have an awesome sister! Who was quite a ruthless coach!
    I would be interested to watch some competitive Thai boxing to see how high kicks are dealt with in competition.

    Hello Patrick, I'm new to your channel and I've been enjoying your videos a lot, this is quality content and I've already subscribed. Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge.
    I have a question: What would be the most proper way to block a front push kick?
    I think that's the type of kick that scares me the most, they seem so powerful and charged that they could send me flying miles away.
    Greetings from Colombia.

    • @EffectiveMartialArts
      @EffectiveMartialArts  4 роки тому

      Thanks for your coment, Chinguirrisguiano! The first thing you need is good mobility, since the best option with striking is usually to avoid the blow entirely, to minimize the damage, then enter on your own terms. I suggest you study our recent fighting stance video here: ua-cam.com/video/PsePf4UXUtY/v-deo.html
      Aside from avoiding with mobility, the best option with a front kick is usually to deviate it with your arm to expose the opponent's back, so that you don't absorb the blow, and combine with a counter.
      In any case, your first option would be to desensitize yourself to this attack, and thus remove the fear. To do so, ask a friend to execute a front push kick at your IN SLOW MOTION with no strength, and practice ways to react to it, slow as well. As you get more comfortable, gradually increase the speed and keep on practicing your defensive reactions. This is the concept of progressive resistance, and is central to safe and effective martial arts training.
      Will publish a striking defense video soon, please stay tuned!
      Hope this helps :)
      Patrick

    The only block i don't like is the inside deviation block. Personally when i spar, when I throw lead leg kicks. I watch for people to lower there lead hand and catch them with the jab right after i kick.

    • @EffectiveMartialArts
      @EffectiveMartialArts  7 років тому +1

      Thanks for your comment, TheAtheismist, indeed that would be a good strategy to adopt. Inside deviation is most effective against powerful forward momentum kicks such as a back leg front push kick, or cross step side kick. The objective is to redirect the opponent's energy in order to expose their back for a counter-attack.

    • @That1GuyOnYoutube

      Thanks for the reply. When ever possible, i try checking kicks with my shin. After a few blocks, people start to hesitate when throwing kicks. Great video though.

      It's usually best to deviate strikes coming down the center, or evade by retreating just enough. Both options should put you in a good position to counter. Will expand on this in the future. - Patrick

    How to block 360 kick

    • @EffectiveMartialArts
      @EffectiveMartialArts  4 роки тому

      The blocks you can use for 360 kicks are the same as the ones mentioned in this video, as you will be stopping the kick half-way. They simply need to be more structurally sound if the kick is thrown harder. It's important to mention also that it's sometimes better to avoid entirely, so use head movements or quick mobility to avoid the kick entirely, and you should always look to counter afterwards. Hope this helps!

    "use these techniques only for self-defense" you are funny, these are blocks and you didn't show any counter attack. Anyway any beginner who has never done martial arts won't be able to reproduce your movements correctly. However you're explaination are great, it might be useful to beginner who are practicing martial arts

    • @EffectiveMartialArts
      @EffectiveMartialArts  7 років тому +1

      Hi DarkFighter, thank you for your comment. Indeed, beginners are taught these techniques alone to start, and practice them slowly in a controlled setting until they are able to execute them correctly. Later on we add counter-attacks, as well as higher speed and more strength to be effective in a real-life situation. Please check out our kick blocks & counter strikes video for more advanced applications.
