  • This is arguably our most important video to date. Understanding these basic principles will provide you with a conceptual framework to better identify the essence of all the techniques in martial arts and self-defense. These principles apply to one-on-one fighting, one against many, as well as many against many, otherwise known as warfare. If you understand these concepts, you will progress faster, you can ultimately create your own techniques, and you will be able to adapt your approach depending on the situation. Techniques can fail, principles always prevail. Enjoy, and please comment below!

    I was really proud of this video when it came out. Had never seen these principles organized and discussed in such a way before. But in hindsight, I realize perhaps it was somewhat lacking in practical applications and demonstrations, such as sparring footage. So here is a more recent video detailing how these principles apply in the grappling range, illustrated by lots of sparring and drilling footage:

    We will be sharing a Striking and Wrestling version in the upcoming months!

      you have a good idea of what fighting consists of. always remember that some people are able to visualize and hear very well so you could think they are at 50 % yet they are at 150% as they have read your eyes and know what your after and can make the 50% position into a trap (to me and everyone, I make mental notes XD) most of what you've taught I learnt In karate so that's also pretty neat. the grappling however was lacking in my lessons so this is a good lesson for me here. can definilty tell you've sparred alot. another thing my teacher taught me was to make sure you focus on eye contact becuase if your not looking where your attacking and able to read what they are going to do just by thier eyes then you not only read them but keep them from reading you. its like a poker face for combat and it messes with them. I've added mutuy knees into my martial art to allow for less contractions, definily important for energy saving for the right moments like you wre saying.

    I think a conceptual understanding of fighting allows you to change the techniques you learn according to the situation and still be effective. I also thinks it helps by serving as a languague to explain to oneself or others why something works or doesn't, and how it can be improved. Therefore I find the conceptual understanding very important to be able to adapt and improve. Great video : )

    I love how realistic and sensible the entire lesson is, I came to learn this because of a book I'm writing, each of the five principles just made directing my fight scenes easier. Each fight had a purpose but failed to express that purpose but now I can look at it from an individual perspective and honestly I'm impressed on how easier it became. Thanks a lot

    Principles of Fighting
    1. Control
    - Achieved when opponent has less control (physical, mental) than you.
    - Intimidate/taunt to provoke them.
    - Take them to the ground. (Being on the ground sacrifices control on mobility.)
    2. Access
    - Achieved when facing upfront, since you have sight and range of your opponent.
    - Get to the opponent's back. (Ever seen a person with eyes on the back of their heads?)
    3. Stability
    - Achieved when proper posture is observed: wide space and proper spine alignment.
    - Strike the feet or the head.
    4. Efficiency
    - Achieved when least amount of resource is used to execute actions.
    - Practice moves and stay fit before the fight. Make the least muscle contractions during the fight.
    5. Tactic
    - Refers to either offense or defense in a fight.
    - Consider tactical retreats after a blow.

    • @EffectiveMartialArts

      Pretty close, with some minor differences. But please keep in mind that you have a certain degree of flexibility when it comes to how you place your body in a fight, and certain adjustments will favor certain attacks. As long as you meet the basic requirements of maintaining stability & mobility, while minimizing openings and being able to quickly transition to the most common defensive and offensive moves. Hope this helps. - Patrick

    Is the point actually to take something down?

  • @Qcstoned
    @Qcstoned 3 роки тому

    Basics is the only very reliable technique. Not saying its a technique with the name 'basic' but that in nature, combat is base for survival, even if its running or pursuing, even if its escaping and hunting, evolution uses physics rather than complex technique. We humans complicate things a lot by just thinking, therefore slowing our reflexes.
    Be confident, but adaptable.

    • @EffectiveMartialArts
      @EffectiveMartialArts  3 роки тому +1

      Good point, Qcstoned. Basics should definitely be mastered first, and constantly sharpened, but it is possible to acquire more refined reflexes in each situation through study and practice, which will offer a distinct advantage in a fight. Thanks for your comment!

      Good question, Brian. I actually created my own system, called Effective Martial Arts, which is a combination of Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Judo and BJJ; basically all the disciplines of MMA, with a bit of influence from Kung Fu and Krav Maga. The red belt is above the black, for those who want to operate their own school. Hope this helps! - Patrick
