    I've join the fraternity. After fixing my dad snowblower last year, via you tube. I thought I'd give mowers a try. OMG, they are so easy. I can't believe what people throw away or sell cheap. Now I wish I had a bigger garage than my stupid single car one. Thanks to all you tuber mechanics, for your information.

      I agree. I have wanted to tinker with lawnmowers for years now. Now that I have more time. I go on UA-cam and have learn a lot. I now have fixed and sold as well. This awesomely easy and fun as well. Thank you to the mechanic on UA-cam that share.

    There's tons of easy money to be made in this market. I pick them off the side of the road (lawn mowers, snowblowers) and most of the time, they need a carb rebuild or a new carb. You COULD buy the genuine OEM part from the manufacturer or get the cheap Chinese knock-off for a 1/10th of the cost. Put a plug in it, change the oil.
    I have about $15-$30 into it and sell them for around double that depending on their features.
    Just doing this as a hobby, I "salvaged" 10 lawn mowers and 4 snowblowers from the landfill and spent about $200 to make them run and sold them for a total of around $800. Not shabby for just junk picking!

    Great advice. I've watched tons of small engine repair vids, but you are one of very few with this kind of helpful info. I'm putting this advice and know-how into use this spring and can hopefully get a start on trade ins. Thanks Hank.

    I worked on these small engines back thirty years ago , since retiring got back into it again . To my benefit have friends I've meet that have some stock piles of buildup of inventory of used parts . Buying new replacement parts can kill your profit when working on one to resale I know , but sometimes you have to do what you have to do . I'm leaning that the one's I can call on for used parts locally now . Thanks good video too .

    Enjoyed the video, I love getting trade ins keeps my inventory up or at least parts. Just found out the blade adapter that has the pulley attached for self propelled is at least $40 new, had no idea it was that pricey.

    Perfect video except I believe you leaned the mower over with the air filter down. I only mention it for other people learning how not to soak the air filter with oil. I learned and confirmed years worth of info on how to flip. Thanks so much for the great video!

    Good video. It's very easy to find a problem, and wind up with a "keeper". Pressure washers have been pretty lucrative lately, but the flea bay supplier almost doubled his prices. No meat on the bone left for me. Other sellers will step in, prices will drop, and I'll be doing some more, I'm sure.

    I've been finding a ton of mowers at the local scrap yard. there are three in town that don't mind you taking apart mowers for parts or buying then whole for around 10-16$.

  • @mjg263

    Can't give a lawnmower away for free here. I'm about the only person in my neighborhood who still cuts his own lawn, even houses with little postage stamp lawns have a lawn service 'round here. Our local Craigslist is loaded with self propelled mowers that are under 4 years old with all the accessories for less than $100, doubt you'd even get $50 for a clean push mower. Guess everyone's afraid to sweat a little anymore!

    Good Info... I usually get them free from folks that just go out and buy new ones... and like you said just clean the carbs and clean up with some simple green and BAMM.. Market it on Craigslist and SOLD Easy $

    • @ontariohvac
      @ontariohvac 7 років тому +1

      Hank also said these things can nickel and dime you to death. I've got three right now that each need $65 - 80 worth of parts, then they'll each be worth $50. Cables especially are deal breakers. But yeah, usually I can clear $20, and it's a good hobby that breaks even. I've even stripped a couple down and painted them, kinda wild, in the spring we'll test that market appeal. But there goes ten man hours plus the paints. Anyway, continue to kick ass.

    always tip a lawnmower over carburator side up so oil doesent saturate the filter or get in the float bowel. Anyways love your vids, keep em comming

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  7 років тому +1

      +Travis Wagner people have said exhaust side up too due to oil filling up the valve spring area and causing issues. Oil is supposed to go on the filter anyways to be honest but I've never really had them leak oil into the carb that way either when it has it was maybe a teaspoon or so. Regardless thanks for watching glad you like them

    Great Video .... I've sold about 700 dollars worth of stuff in the past month that's been sitting around . Where I live the average sells on rider mowers is 200 to 400 dollars for one in good condition . Push mowers depending on the brand 50 to 200 dollars . I sold my Scotts 16/42 rider I bought new in 1998 from Home Depot to a friend I work with for 350 , with a new deck belt and blades and service . That price is average on those comparable size mowers . A lady at work has an old Murray 12.5 horse and 38 inch deck that's been sitting for 3 years , and wants 100 dollars , that no deal and she thinks I'm trying to steal it from her !!!! People don't understand you will have more in a mower than it will sell for ... Good luck with a great season Pal !!!!!!!

    I've done this before but around here in the spring/fall you can find mowers on the side of the road with "free" sign on them. 99% of the time either carb is gummed up with crap or bad fuel either just turned sour or with water in it from sitting out in the snow all winter. Basically every one of those is a free $50 bill sitting on the side of the road

    I generally scrap useful parts from anything I’m tossing out so your “parts inventory “ makes a lot of sense to me. I also gather metals and drop off a truckload at the scrapyard a few times a year. It usually gives me a free tank of gas. Next time I’m there I’m going to see what they do with discarded mowers. I bet there’s a bunch there that just need some TLC.

    Gasoline is the same way here in Arkansas too , not cutting people down - but people just don't know how to take care of there power equipment. They let it sit outside in all the elements and expect it too last and run - and another thing they think that there mowers are worth $20 , 30 , even $40.00 not running - crazy .

    just curious, do you do an oil change and basic tune up to all your mowers before you sell them? i started doing this and it doesn't seem to matter to most. i have found more satisfaction out of it rather than just getting it running, going through it and cleaning it up. it costs about 10$ more per mower however on average but i see most my competition here does not.

    • @hanksgarage_

      best thing you can do for the electrical is get a digital voltmeter and start checking resistance at the brake, deck height and seat safety switches. the ignition signal on some of these has to travel through all those switches to pass signal to the solonoid from the key switch. sometimes its a ground that kills the signal if not isolated via the switch or sometimes its the actual voltage signal that passes through the switches. i always work from the starter back with voltage checks until i hit the key switch. if nothing i check the battery for proper ground and its connections. if still no signal from key switch i ohm out the switch to check it, if thats good then i start checking connectors and switches wires etc.. this will usually lead you to the issue. these are pretty simple for the most part, you have a solonoid that needs a 12v signal from the key switch, this signal is passed from the battery. given the different variations you have a few safety switches to check out but once you get to doing these youll figure them out. if it cranks but no start thats usually a seat switch as it most the time is wired to the coil to kill it in case you fall off. if it does not crank at all its connection, deck height, brake or blade engagment switch or possibly a bad ignition switch or dirty one.

  • @dfields9511
    @dfields9511 7 років тому +1

    Great info. As a hobby I am starting to do this but on a much smaller scale. I love to work with my mind and hands and fix things. Just wanted to ask what do you think of electric mowers? I know the resale on them I my area is almost nothing. You will have to give it away for free here In The ATL I get rid of it.

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  7 років тому

      +D Fields yeah that's the one bad thing about electric lawnmowers is they don't have much resell value, however the newer they are and if they are battery powered that can be different. But older ones run by batteries or old or new ones that plug into an extension cord are not worth all that much. Personally I think the market on the consumer end is going to gravitate more towards battery powered lawnmowers and equipment. The technology has definitely improved and for your average consumer that will never change the oil in their lawnmower it is suffice to say that this is the best option for them. Most people these days don't bother to maintain their gas powered equipment sadly.

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  5 років тому

      Sometimes. It depends on what it is and what it needs. As for lawn tractors it’s rare. Unless they do t need much and they normally need a lot done they generally aren’t worth it. Parts for them are a lot more pricey than for push mowers and not near as interchangeable.

    I'm 14 and I'm interested in starting this I have some questions
    1.) where do you store your mowers
    2.) should I just spray some carb cleaner to clean the carb
    3. how much is the average price for a push mower
    4.) what is the average price for a self propelled mowet

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  8 років тому +1

      You can store them anywhere you have space, ive stored them in my garage or side of house, but most I keep at my dads place seen in the video, carb cleanings you usually need to do full cleanings, ive never had luck just putting carb spray in them, prices are probably different for you, you need to browse your local craigslist and determine what they are going for in your area

      @titus6476 7 років тому

      It's a small clip of metal bout the size of your fingernail. It keeps the flywheel in place as well as the timing correct. Without a key the engine may backfire or not start or run at all. What happens if the power stroke tried to happen during intake? This is why you need a flywheel key.

    I fix small engines too, mowers to go karts, get them all free and sell them, mostly mowers. But can you do another video on the same topic but with more topics? For example, we are in October right now, Winter is coming up and no one wants to buy a lawn mower, what would you do? Fix them and sell them cheap or leave it for next year to fix and sell on summer? I just don't have enough space to storage them all. Love your videos man.

    Folks getting into the small engine repair business will be surprised at how many people decide to junk mowers because they simply have old gas in them, a lot of times all you have to do is drain that nasty old gunk out & run some fresh through it.

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  3 роки тому +2

      Yup. I tell people that all the time. It’s about 90 something percent that a nonstarting mower is carb/fuel related

  • @RichardSmith-nj4pn

    I used to find them and fixed and sell but I realized it’s not a lot of value in them it’s just waist of time, and if you have to buy parts you can be negative in profit.

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  2 роки тому +1

      I've been doing it for over 10 years and am nowhere near in the negative, especially not with the UA-cam ad revenue on it all now. I rarely have to buy parts as I have so many on hand to pull from other machines. When I do have to buy new I have a sponsorship that sends me what I need.
