GT350 OIL CONSUMPTION! How BAD is it?

  • In today's video we discuss my GT350 oil consumption. How bad is it really? I've had my 2017 Shelby GT350 for nearly a year now and have accumulated around 4,400 miles on the car. Since then my car has consumed about 2 quarts of oil, which is actually normal. For those of you that aren't familiar with the 5.2L Voodoo engine, it is common to see these engines consume oil. I've heard as much as 1 quart per thousand miles. I'm glad mine wasn't that much, but checking your oil frequently is a must for any GT350 owner out there!

UA-cam suggested this video to me. I enjoyed it. I usually watch Streetspeed717, Salomondrin, Doug DeMuro, Shmee150, and a few other car channels, but none of them have a GT350 and I was curious to see how much oil consumption those have as I'd heard it could be significant. Also looking forward to the upcoming GT500 Ford is bringing out. Cheers.

It's normal even for new cars to waste a quart every 500 miles, so no worries. People who aren't scientists or engineers don't understand that synthetic oil with a wide viscosity spread will slip past engine parts more often than conventional or synblend. We have new cars today that run 0w-20 and dealerships are eating engine warranties because the oil is so thin/slippery.

My 1993 Ford Econoline Van has nearly 200,000 miles and it doesn't burn a single drop of oil, but yeah I understand the way engines are designed. Keep up the good work on the videos, although sometimes I wish you would upload more often.

Motorcraft 5W-50 isn’t a robust oil, it shears to a 30-weight oil in less than 1500 miles. Thin base stock loaded with polymeric thickeners, which shear. As far as warranty, I’ve never seen a Ford dealer send an oil off for testing to verify you are using a spec oil. As long as the level is good and there isn’t evidence of starvation or neglect you’re good on the warranty front.

    • @02hreblue30

Actually its GT 5W-50 the same as in the Ford GT. Its very good oil. Very expensive. I ran it gently to break in then at 1500 miles after my 2nd oil change I went to Amsoil.

@@02hreblue30 Actually it is. I’ve seen probably 3 dozen Motorcraft 5W-50 UOA results from Blackstone and Oil Analyzers and they pretty consistently return mediocre at best performance.
MC 5W-50 consistently shears to a 30 weight oil within 2000 miles of service, and that’s actually atrocious for a 50-weight oil. In fact, I can’t think of a more shear prone oil.
UnleashedBeast had extensive UOA compilations over on SVTPerformance. Less shear prone 40 weights consistently provided better results, including used viscosity, wear metals, and TBN retention than MC 5W-50.

You are wrong about Mobil 1. except during the first 5oo miles. After that you can run a 100% synthetic oil. With my GT 350 R I use the best oil there is, Royal Purple. I have been using Royal Purple sense my 2003 SVT Cobra. We did a test on that car running a chases dynamiter test with Ford synthetic blind and one after changing ALL the fluids to Royal Purple. We picked up 41.7 hp and 29.4 lb/ft just by changing to Royal purple. Another mechanic friend has a Porsche 911 he checked what his car was using the oil recommended by Porsche and Mobil 1. The difference was within the noise. He then swapped all fluids to Royal Purple and his gain was slightly less than my Mustang but still worth doing. He gained 29.5 hp and 19.1 lb/ft. I also get better gas mileage. Enough so that on my 2003 that I raced in SCCA. It helped me win one race by keeping my engine running until about 500' past the finish line.

You should not need a socket to remove the oil drain plug. It has o-rings and don't need to be torque.

They can't void your warranty because you don't use their oil. If you use correct weight your good to go. Consumers luckily have government law that prevents manufactures from doing that. They have to prove without a doubt it's oil related. GM tries the same with dexos approved. I don't use motorcraft but its all about what helps you sleep at night. Good video

Common problem with too many new cars. Are manufactures trying to get too exotic with rings to reduce friction? It's been my experience that oil consumption destroys cats. For me, burning 1 quart per 1m miles, cats replaced every 20,000 miles. Never again!

  • @techmonkie2199

As a previous GT350 owner that went through an engine due to massive oil consumption, I'm here to tell you that under normal driving circumstances, 1q per 1k miles is *not* normal. The Shelby insert says that 1q for every 500 miles can be expected under hard track driving (high revs, high load, extreme conditions, etc). Driving this car under normal daily conditions should not result in it burning any significant amount of oil.
Don't let the 'high revving flat plane crank' bullshit fool you. These cars have a systemic mechanical/engineering issue; I've seen people who have bought their car brand new as a 2018 spin main bearings and/or throw rods within the first 2k miles. I loved my Shelby; it was hands down the most extreme car I've ever driven, but I'm part of a growing minority of people who drove their car like a normal person and still suffered catastrophic engine damage.. that's neither normal or expected.

So if you buy a gen 1 voodoo gt350 what can you do to address the issue? I want to buy a gen 1 gt350 and I intend to use the car as a daily. Probably 0 track days or drag strip. Just spirited driving on the streets and weekend canyon drives. Will car consume a lot of oil with light to modest hard driving?

Sorry man it's real hard to feel bad for you, working in your hot shop with your GT350 on a hoist! I get to do all my work on my crappy vehicles in my driveway while being cooked by the sun or in the rain, snow, etc. Oh wait here let me try to squeeze out one tear for you! lol ;)
And if your oil consumption doesn't get better you might want to add a oil separator set up on it. It won't help it if the oil is getting past the rings. But it will cut down on the oil getting into the intake thru the breather/pcv system. And it will also help keep some of the carbon deposits from happening as bad.

Next time open the cap on the oil catcher so air will go away and it will not fill as fast and dont have to stop the oil while is coming out just tight it back when its getting full that way you dont have a leakage from the cap

The GT does it too. I have a 2012 GT that consumes almost 2 quarts per 1000 miles. I took it to Ford and of course they said there was nothing wrong when I drove it in missing 2+ quarts of oil. Then Ford engineers are so stupid they didn’t add a low oil indicator in the cluster

Canister style filters are going away because too many people weren't puncturing them to drain them properly, too much oil in the landfill.
5w_50_? Seems excessive, excessively thick, which is no guarantee of protection. Shades of BMW's rod bearing fiasco. Hopefully ford at least got the tolerances right, instead of BMW who probably should have specified an SAE 20 instead of an SAE 60.
Ugh, tinted windows. If it's for the heat you can get clear film that blocks IR nowadays.

1 quart per 1000 miles, and you think that's bad...…….you are adorable.
I bought a brand new Chevrolet Lumina Z34 from the dealer the first year they came out. It had Chevy's new 3.4l V6. I ordered it custom, fully loaded and I was one of the almost non-existent people who got the 5 speed manual. Dealer said I was the 1st one he has heard of that got the manual. I'm not sure that had anything to do my oil consumption, but it's worth mentioning. Also note that I was not driving like Morgan Freeman in driving Mrs Daisy. Neither was I trying to be Jeff Gordon.
We noticed something odd from the get go. As it was in break-in period, I had the oil changed every 3500kms, not 5000kms as the dealer recommended. After the 3rd change, I started checking the oil regularly myself. I was constantly putting oil in, in order to make it to 5000kms for the oil change. We complained to Chev and they said that engine was prone for excessive oil consumption, and that if changed every 4000kms would not be an issue.
So I started tracking it carefully over the next 3 oil changes....so 15,000kms. We burned almost exactly one litre of oil for every 900-1000kms driven. We complained to Chev and they said again it burns a lot of oil, but there is nothing they can do. So to be clear here, after 5000kms we were no longer technically changing the oil as there was almost none left in the pan. We were adding oil. Of course we never let it get lower than 1/2, as we were well aware of the burn rate.
We met several other Z34 owners (all automatics) and when we asked about bad oil burn rates, they instantly replied back "Hell yeah". Everyone was seeing it. We ended up taking Chev to arbitration over it as I knew the motor was going to burn itself out, probably just after the warranty expired. We ended up getting a huge chunk (most) of our money back and got a MASSIVE deal on a brand new fully loaded K2500 Chev Suburban, with the 6.2L diesel. Best thing we ever did. Zero problems with the 'Burb and best vehicle we ever had.

I dont think this high of consumption should be considered normal since it basically requires people to add oil between changes to not blow their engine up. Did you get a catch can? And if so, how much did that catch?
