A more useful framing is "max phys/special hit taken" which is roughly the product of hp and def/spdef. For either one it's maximized for even hp/def and for both it's maximized at roughly hp = 2x def. Drifloon is actually close to optimal for mixed bulk. But in competitive you prefer being really good at one thing than OK at everything, which is why e.g. Skarmory and Blissey do better. Its typing doesn't help either, since ice, rock, and dark are such common offensive types (as opposed to Skarmory, who takes neutral or resisted dmg from those).
Galarian Corsola is also an indication that even having high defenses especially with Eviolite and access to Strength Sap still couldn't save it from falling off so quickly in early Gen 8 OU because you're Knock Off weak

As an avid player of DPP i would like to give additional comments on its viability in both UU and NU. Calm Mind Drifblim in DPP UU has its perks over NP Missy and Sub Rotom, but the set is largely out of favor to its utility sets with Will-O-Wisp, Explosion, Sucker Punch, Thunder Wave, Destiny Bond, you name it. Drifbilm is still used on Double Ghost structures due to its ability to lure in pursuiters like Houndoom and Skuntank while also luring other common special walls like Clefable Milotic and Registeel to boom on them or take them out with Destiny Bond to enable a late-game NP Missy sweep. While you have a lot of points correct on its viability in NU, I'd say that its the best Ghost-type but not the best spinblocker, that honor would go to Dusclops. Drifblim does still fit on offensive hazard stacking structures as a late-game sweeper but the weakness to Hitmonchan's Ice Punch or Thunder Punch doesn't make it consistent at preventing a Rapid Spin. Also on CM sets although it isn't listed on smogdex, Endure + Petaya Berry is another good Drifblim set that allows it to immediately countersweep faster wallbreakers in case it needs to live a powerful hit, usually the case since its weak to Stealth Rock and will be in range of Charizard's Fire Blast, Hitmonchan's elemental punch, and any various super effective hit, which allows it not only to revenge kill these Pokemon but to gain a boost in situations where it isn't able to obtain a Calm Mind boost safely. Choice Drifblim is mostly a meme, lead Drifblim is barely seen because of the influx of Sharpedo and Lum Berry Ampharos lead, and utility sets with Wisp + Explosion do exist but is mostly replicable by Haunter and Gardevoir.

On full Baton Pass teams, it can instantly win you match vs so many AG teams when you have Speed boosts and Ingrain and you can spam Sub Protecr on Lefties mon and basically never get hit. The fact that it took until GEN 9 for Drifblim to get a more powerful special Flying move than freaking Air Cutter (which it was only able to learn in gen 4 and was otherwise stuck with GUST mind you) is crazy

While not competitive, I think it’s worth mentioning that some people use Drifblim in BSS to baton pass evasion and stockpile boosts to make an invincible sweeper.
In Radical Red and Emerald Rogue I've made decent use of weakness policy drifblim. Being the most difficult to kill unburden pokemon, it can be difficult to one-shot with super effective moves, especially weaker ones. Once it gets the weakness policy unburden off it's basically the equivalent of a shell smash without further defense loss. This can be supported with strength sap too. It's not super reliable, but it does work, and it's the only pokemon that can do this. Drifblim really is not a strong pokemon, but it is certainly unique in a number of ways.

I can't understand how PU from the not fully evolved from gen 6 turned into a shitstorm of broken pokemons in gen 9. Hell... Even OU seems more fair even with Dondozo and Kingambit
Like they've given Corviknight this "Taxi Flyer" gimmick in lore, they really could give us a Drifblim Evo the size of Wailord that's an Air Bus as its region's "Poke-Transportation". Ntm as a Ghost Type it could be a "Ferry of the Afterlife", a pokedex entry along the lines of "It can often be found hovering over shipwrecks and plane crashes, believed by some to be ferrying the large bounty of souls to the afterlife who as payment, provide it fuel for the spirit flame enabling its flotation."
On the plus side, Drifblim is one of the strongest pokemon of all time in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Breaking move economy with Unburden on top of the most broken room hitter in the game in Ominous/Silver Wind fishing for omniboosts on each target it hits? Overwhelming.
"It needs an evolution at this point..." At this point, my brain went 'So, Drifenburg for a full zeplin-shaped evolution with an obvious reference?' before it followed up with 'but curse it with the Dusclops -> Dusknoir problem' (evolution with minimal power upgrade)
Why id tbis video giving me Banette vibes. First gen its in? Was actually good where it was. But over the years stagnates and heavily outclassed to the point it gets untiered, but has some kind of little uprising when a new mechanic breaths new life into it even if briefly. Oh and both are ghosts
I want to see an evolution with wailord size formed into a zeppelin in reference to the joke of it being called hindenburg. As for stats I'd probably NOT increase its defenses (maybe a +5 but no more) and just invest into offence. Also a high power signature move that burn both itself and the opponent would be hillarious.
crashlanding, 95-100 base power, 90 accuracy physical move, that burns both the target and the user. user still gets burned if the target doesnt get hit. would allow for some funny doubles stuff, where you crashland on your own pokemon, to activate flare boost, and guts
waiting for the counterparts to complete: - Carracosta - Seviper - other gen 5 monkeys - Gothitelle - incineroar - Tornadus - Aromatisse And I guess we could finish up Gen 2 with Sunflora, Magcargo (Slugma Male Grindset paying off when?) and Corsola. I think those are the only gen 2 Pokemon left to wrap it up.
ngl looking at Drifblims stats made me realize how a lot of early Gens has a typical "high af HP" Pokemon or a "Chansey clone" Gen 1 has Chansey/Wigglytuff Gen 2 has Blissey/Wobbuffet Gen 3 has Wailord Gen 4 has Drifblim Gen 5 has Audino

Loved Drifblim in gen 7 VGC! Ran the swagger misty seeds set and was super fun with Metagross and Buzzswole. I really hate that they essentially made it so swagger is barely learned now and misty terrain is just not very viable compared to the other 3
If Drifblim were to evolve, would it be called "Drifelin"? Probably lower its Base Speed to 75 and Base Attack to 50 to increase its Base Health to 165, Base Special Attack to 110, Base Defence to 74, and Base Special Defence to 84, its Base Stats would be 553. I don't think that would be busted considering the Pokémon nowadays, but it would be a definite improvement
Hindendrif evolution idea. Same abilities, all you do is change it's defensive from 44 and 54 to 80 and 90. Now it may actually be decent at taking hits.
While it sucks it didn't see much other success, bringing Baton Pass to doubles and seeing success is absolutely wild. Drifblim is definitely not a Pokemon that fits in many competitive formats. speedy tanks are an incredibly rare archetype in Pokemon, mostly because tanks with good speed don't usually have the best defense. The Baton Pass set reminded me that Drifblim is pretty infamous in non-smogon singles because its often been seen as the face of broken evasion spam. Learning both Minimize and Stockpile, Drifblim could leverage its odd stat layout to both get a boost off ahead of time and live a potential hit if it got unlucky. These attributes were boosted even further when it gained Strength Sap in gen 8.

Love the background music. We need a play list for them!
"It needs an evolution at this point..." At this point, my brain went 'So, Drifenburg for a full zeplin-shaped evolution with an obvious reference?' before it followed up with 'but curse it with the Dusclops -> Dusknoir problem' (evolution with minimal power upgrade)
I wish Drifblim had more coverage to Fly moves like Sky Drop.... it would be so cool... 👻👻👻
Why id tbis video giving me Banette vibes. First gen its in? Was actually good where it was. But over the years stagnates and heavily outclassed to the point it gets untiered, but has some kind of little uprising when a new mechanic breaths new life into it even if briefly. Oh and both are ghosts
Gen 4 was a good time for the ghost types. The type not being physical anymore made their attacks useful.
@@blu6295 i didn't even consider boosting an ally, great catch👍
waiting for the counterparts to complete:
- Carracosta
- Seviper
- other gen 5 monkeys
- Gothitelle
- incineroar
- Tornadus
- Aromatisse
And I guess we could finish up Gen 2 with Sunflora, Magcargo (Slugma Male Grindset paying off when?) and Corsola. I think those are the only gen 2 Pokemon left to wrap it up.
"Lets make a bulky ghost type"
'...'
"With a lot of HP, no defenses and no recovery"
I am glad Drifblim got its day in the Sun in VGC.
ngl looking at Drifblims stats made me realize how a lot of early Gens has a typical "high af HP" Pokemon or a "Chansey clone"
Gen 1 has Chansey/Wigglytuff
Gen 2 has Blissey/Wobbuffet
Gen 3 has Wailord
Gen 4 has Drifblim
Gen 5 has Audino
I actually did a Convergent form+Evo for Drifblim,
Sparloon, Inferblim and Explouplin they are Convergence of Drifloon and Drifblim with an added evolution
Ghost/Fire
Levitate
Inspirations are paper lanterns, Firework balls and hideyoshi's crown in Pokemon Conquest
Explouplin/Drifeplin bst is 568
HP:160
Atk: 30
Def: 84
SpAtk: 115
SpDef: 99
Speed: 80
Never thought of abilities for Drifeplin, mostly cause Drifblim has such really good ones
It needs an evolution where it becomes a zeppelin, and a regional form where drifloon is a balloon animal.
I never thought to name it Hindenburg. that's such a based nickname
Drifblim helped me get my best placements during the SM era. While it’s not in this video, I got Top 8 at a Fall 2017 Regional with it. I might consider using it again if Tapu Lele ever returns
I tricked myself into thinking this video already happened years ago
I love your analyses on niche Pokemon in the competitive scene-at least in OU and VGC!
Asking "are you tired of browsers eating up your ram?" while showing Chrome eating 2.4% while Opera gx eats 8-9% is pretty wild
Always a trip seeing gen 7 Mr Talent clips on this channel lol

I'm okey with this.
Drifblim nation stand down he finally uploaded
Drifloon LC video next please
HECK YEAH MY FAVORITE FLYING TYPE
Welp, here's to another year of wait for the Gengar remake.
Currently using my Lead Drifblim as in DPP OU!
Unburden Focus Sash, paired with Explosion|Shadow Ball|HP Fighting|(filler) actually gets surprising value. I typically like Knock Off or Magic Coat for some extra utility.
Such a good bwompy boi
1:04 Kaidon deez nuts lmao gottem
What’s the Scarlet box Legendary called again? 🤔
Drifloon only appeared on Friday because it was hanging around for kids before school ended on the weekend
Driblim evo idea
Phantairship
Stats
160/80/74/90/74/80: 558 OR 170/90/85/90/85/80: 600
Abilities and typing are the same
Evolutionary line
Drifloon (Level 28) > Drifblim (Level up while knowing Tailwind; learned at Level 48) > Phantairship
Is Drifblim any good in Platinum? I want to use a Flying typebthat isnt Staraptor, since everyone uses that.
Ghost/Flying is such a weird type. You're a ghost you can already fly/levitate.
But do ghosts have the power of wind???
gengar doesnt
What if you’re a tree ghost rooted to the ground
@@Jamie16 Then you'll have tree powers like Trevanant
@@jake9107 gengar floats around
I thought we were finally lost Kellen (incorrectly) referring to ZU as "Untiered".
The set i use on drifblim
Max hp, max speed
Flare boost
Flame orb
Will o wisp
Calm mind
Hex
Strength sap
Flame orb enables full speed investment
Will o wisp, strength sap, and calm mind make good use of its high hp
And flare boosted hex on burn hits very hard even without any investment, and thanks to calm mind, can hit hard even without burned targets
I like it
0:01 STILL waiting for “How Good was Amoonguss Actually”…
That's gonna be a 10 hour video
Thats gonna be a movie and we still haven't even got the cresselia movie yet either
@@swagmaster699 it better be considering i’ve been asking for well over a year :p
"How SUS was Amoonguss Actually?"
Driflim is one of my favorites, one set I like playing is will-o-wisp hex calm mind and strength sap , trying to help it’s defenses and in gen 9 don’t know which Tera I would choose but I think fairy fits alright
Ah, Drifblim, my favorite flying type
Shoutout to Drifblim being unironically broken in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Unburden + Ominous Wind is not an okay combo to have.
Missed opportunity to release this video on a Friday
My personal misconception with Drifblim's name was that it was named Driftblum.
