    Very well thought out and presented, Captain. Some times it's the little things that can really make the difference and I think your success rate shows that. Thanks for passing that along.

      Hi Scott many thanks for the jig purchase and I hope they serve you well! Hopefully you'll get a chance to wet a jig over the 4th of the July weekend! The halis are starting to show up in local waters (especially smaller chickens) so with any luck those jigs will connect with a halibut soon! I'd love to hear how they work for you. Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

    I’m really enjoying your videos! Just came across them a few days ago. This is the best description of rigging a grub I’ve seen. I’ve been fishing out of elfin cove the last few years and learning how to find and catch halibut more regularly. How about a video on what you look for, depth,tides,etc. in setting up to anchor. Thanks for posting!

      Hi Terry many thanks for watching and glad you found this grub guide useful! I'm glad to hear that you've had increasing success out of Elfin Cove - there is some great fishing out that way! Do you fish out of a specific lodge or just head out there self-guided? I appreciate the suggestions for new video topics and agree these would be a great addition to my how-to series - I'll add these topics to the list! I've started to pull together a simple site which aims to provide some guidance also. Still early days but here is the link as there may be some useful nuggets - fromrodtotable.com/fishing/halibut-fishing-tips/

    Nice jig! Do you sharpen your hook every time you go out?

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Steven I appreciate you tuning in! Yes indeed - you've hit on another point I'm planning on covering in a future video as well! Sharp hooks are SO important and often overlooked. I do sharpen my hook before each outing and then also check periodically during the fishing session to ensure that the point hasn't been fouled by a hang-up on the bottom. I assume you are a believer in the importance of hook sharpening as well? Tight lines! Captain Zac

    Good advice, I always hook my grubs up with the tails opposite of the bend of the hook. If you do it the other way the tail always gets hung up on the hook

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  3 роки тому

      Hi FishinHank thanks for watching and I'm glad you found these tips useful! Exactly - if the grub is rigged towards the bend of the hook, it can definitely get hung up on the hook which is bad for two reasons: 1) it can compromise the hookset and 2) you'll have no tail fluttering to attract the fish! All the best and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

  • @gc0960

    Capt Zac- that action shot at the end looks really good. Almost a shame to add bait strips to it because it might detract from the action. Have you ever just put some of that Pro Cure gel on the jig to get some scent going but leave that action as is and that big ol’ hook gap wide open?

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Geoff thanks for watching and I'm glad you found these tips helpful! I agree the action of the grub tail is really enticing and it only gets better when enhanced with a scent such as Pro-Cure gel! I'm aiming to create another "how to" video specifically on the topic of scent. I do fish these jigs without bait at times and find the free-flowing action and ability to quickly cover the depth range near the bottom (within 10 feet of the bottom) can really trigger a halibut strike! Calm seas and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

    • @gc0960
      @gc0960 3 роки тому

      @@CaptainZac - another benefit of going grub/skirt/gel scent -only is that if you do get a bite and miss on the hook set, then just leave it down there in the strike zone. You don't have to worry if your bait got taken off the hook. You still have down there exactly what brought the bite on in the first place. Looking forward to testing some of these ideas in the future. jig-jig-THUMP!

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  3 роки тому +1

      Hi A to the K thanks for tuning in. The halibut are harder to come by this early in the season since they are very deep. As the season goes on, the halibut will move shallower to feed on all the dead salmon, shrimp, crabs, etc. Congrats on getting a boat! As the weeks/months go on, the fishing and crabbing locally here in Juneau will only get better and better! Tight lines! Captain Zac

      @@CaptainZac thanks for the pointers. Are the crab also farther out in the deep as well? . What’s fishing right now?in late April?

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  3 роки тому +1

      @@AtotheK907 Yes the crabs are generally deeper as well. They are also less active. I've been catching a few dungies but have actually been finding more baby king crabs instead (of course those all go back). This is a tough time for fishing - the winter king season is over so now you've got some marginal crabbing, check the latest regs on shrimp as that was shut down last I checked, halibut are super deep, rockfish are available. In another month, everything will start to light up and there will be so many fishing and crabbing opportunities!

    Do you think a smaller version would be worth a try in San Francisco Bay? The biggest I have ever caught was 40 lbs in the bay average is a lot smaller.

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  3 роки тому +1

      Hi R B many thanks for tuning in! Yes indeed - my smallest jig, the 1oz "Chicken Slayer" is perfect for targeting smaller fish. This is most often fished with another weight (say 8oz) above the leader which gives you the ability to cover more depth/current situations. The 7oz is also a great option and can catch anything from a ping pong paddle to a barn door! I'm hoping to be fully restocked soon (supplier delays due to Covid) but I do still have limited inventory of all sizes still. www.ebay.com/str/fromrodtotable
      Also - this page explains a little more about about how to rig the finesse 1oz jig - fromrodtotable.com/fishing/halibut-fishing-tips/
      One benefit of the Chicken Slayer is that is presents a small enough target for any halibut to attack and when they bite they almost always get hooked because they suck in the entire jig (often tipped with bait such as squid and/or herring). Also - up here in Alaska we get a lot of great by-catch when fishing this jig - such as pacific cod or rockfish, which can help mix things up if the bite is slow! Happy to answer any more specific questions.

    What knot do you use to tie on the jig?

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  3 роки тому

      Hi Steven thanks for watching and I'm glad you found these tips useful. I'm glad you asked as this will be a great topic for another "How To" video - I tie a heavy duty corkscrew swivel directly to braid (65-80lb) with a uni knot. I prefer 10 wraps when using braid. I then attach the jig directly to the corkscrew swivel. I prefer this "direct connection" when fishing a jig to optimize both feel (bite identification) and hookset power. Some folks do use a bumper that offers some give between the jig connection and the main line - I've never found that to be necessary but recognize that some utilize this approach. Do you have a preferred knot when fishing a halibut jig? Hard to go wrong with a palomar knot as well. Calm seas and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

    • @stevencarlson1615
      @stevencarlson1615 3 роки тому +3

      @@CaptainZac palamer knot usually but a uni k it sounds better!

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  3 роки тому +1

      @@stevencarlson1615 Both are great options! Just be sure to give the Uni enough wraps when using braid - I like 10 just to be extra safe! Often I go with 6 or so for mono.
