Final Cut Pro has consistently proven its reliability, with no crashes and intuitive usability. The convenience of purchasing the program just once is a significant advantage for me. I'm not fond of subscription models, and if Apple were to transition to this model for the desktop version solely to increase the frequency of updates, I would prefer to wait longer for each update release.

I have plenty of crashes. Not sure if they are from FCPX or from my plugins - which are essential to gain the results I need, since these features aren't built in, like in competitor software.
Former PP user. Current FCP user. I don't need AI to make my products. I just need a stable platform to edit on which FCP is. I'll stop using FCP if they stop supporting it and only really then.
I have tried both editing platforms and much prefer FCP, to my mind it's much more intuitive, not to mention much faster than Premier in my opinion :)
That’s fair but as someone that’s had to use several other NLEs as well just to be able to collaborate with people that use them, I’d say that the DaVinci Resolve comparison is in some ways more important the Premiere Pro one. For one thing, FCP and Resolve both are more of a “buy once and get all future versions” (Resolve) or “buy once and get many years of updates without having to buy again” (FCP) as opposed to Premiere Pro’s subscription model.
I’d say that FCP makes the most sense for editors that are exclusively working with Macs and have most of their clients on the same page. My studio has a mix of Macs and PCs, so I’m typically using Premiere Pro or Resolve more often than FCP or Vegas Pro so that I can more easily move the project to whatever that fastest free system is at the time as opposed to being stuck on one OS or the other. But for editors who aren’t having to deal with that, Apple has a headstart on optimizing for Apple silicon in FCP and so it doesn’t really matter how well Resolve (for example) uses newer discrete GPUs.
And if you’re editing laptop only (especially running on battery), then FCP is an even better deal.

I’m a BIG fan of FCPX. It’s not “exciting” but very reliable (less crashing), VERY fast, and easy to use. I also want Apple to improve the iPad version and the editing experience on that platform.
As a former Final Cut Pro X user I have to admit that is the fastest software to video edit. The render caching and export times are incredible. However I am one of those editors who have to find assets and effects elsewhere, constantly looking for third party plug ins for noise reduction, motion blur, color grading and different transitions. I switched to Davinci recently and even feeling underwhelmed with the speed I think is more complete and I don’t spend more time looking outside the software for tools that are already in the program. Shame Apple, you could’ve keep a very interesting competition to PP and DR but I guess that a headset and a repetitive iPhone “innovations “ are first

I've lived in FCP professionally (100% of my income) after switching from premiere 6 years ago. That being said, I just bought resolve studio this morning.

Very hard to argue about a software that rarely crashes compared to Premier lol so many of my friends use Premiere and complain that it crashes (Josh Yeo even complained multiple times when he was trying to release a handful of films...). Their only argument as to why they continue to use it is because of AE and all the other software that goes hand and hand (which for that, I respect).
Apple knows that if they don't charge a monthly subscription, users will continually upgrade their current machines knowing that they will spend $3k+ every 3-5 years. I think the subscription for the iPad is more so a "luxury" that you get to edit on the fly compared to a computer. Almost like an added bonus, which as a result, will need more updates to keep up with the OS updates.
Fair point about Premiere Pro crashing more often (I’ve had experience crashing it since the 90s and for most of my editing it does crash less now) but I’d say that comes up a bit less often with Resolve. Now, I can easily make any one of the major NLEs crash when I start stressing them but it’s not like the Premiere Pro crashing complaints come out of nowhere. :)
I am in no way a professional editor. Nor do I plan on becoming one, but I must say that the way they implemented the scrolling timeline in the latested version really blows the same versions in Premiere and DaVinci out of the Water usability wise. Just look at the video Post Production Professional made comparing the scrolling timeline in all 3 programs.
I was a Final Cut Pro loyalist, then I had to edit a short film in braw, and I saw that to get the mask features, color features, and conversion to braw, and I could either spend hundreds on plugins (some subscriptions) or just buy DaVinci to have all the features I needed. It became a cost benefit no brainer for me to buy Studio at that point. I'm not going to buy plugins that may or may not be supported natively in the software and spend thousands on that over the years like many FCPers have, I want a complete solution, or at least something that's easier to collaborate with frequent substantial updates on like Premiere.

Honestly the last point you made felt like the best one. Makes a ton of sense. I love fcp but I don’t think huge announcements for updates isn't a needed thing. We see the updates when they happen and it shows the new features. I do agree apple is behind is keeping up with features that other editing softwares have but I still love the flow of FCP, the editing speed, lack of crashing, and at least so far how I haven’t had to continually pay a subscription.
I think it's game over for Final Cut Pro. They even advertise DaVinci Resolve in the marketing materials.

I love FCPX and the magnetic timeline but its not enough, Feels like Apple doesnt care so i switched to Davinci Resolve. Using Final cut pro its expensive you need alot plugins....

Great video Matt. Final Cut has so much potential with their iPad app and fast editing feature of the magnetic timeline that still is faster than editing in resolve or premiere. Just need updates more often and more exciting features. We just want see Apple put more effort and focus into the program again.
As a Premiere editor, my biggest pet peeve about FCPX is that it only exports XML's in the new FCPX format which Premiere (or Avid) doesn't work with. I have to import the XML into Davinci, then from Davinci export out a standard XML 7.0.

it really comes down to personal preference and what youre editing. I love FCP for youtube videos. But for example if i were to edit a wedding film i probably would at least colorgrade it in davinci instead of finalcut pro.

Fcp has been a solid editor for the last 5 years for me. Only updates I’d like to see is Ai updates around audio and cloning and better stabilisation features, apart from that, I’ve bought enough add ons over the years that I’m chill with it
I love fcp, but hope a video likes this encourages apple to make it even better.
I feel like Adobe premiere has been really lackluster in the updates because they skip updating necessary core features like the transitions. They're clunky to apply and many are outdated and decades old. The page peel transition is an embarrassment.
I still miss the final cut Pro 7 interface. Apple really blew it when they killed off final cut Pro 7's interface.
FCP editor here. V fair video. I'd like to learn Resolve but it's daunting to start over and it's hard to find the time.
Apple recently made it clear that FCP is not End of Life. On the other hand, it seems to be in a perpetual maintenance mode at this point. Their secretive business model makes little sense. Secretive in development is to avoid leaks that your competitors can take advantage of. At this point, FCP is in "catchup" mode so secretive is a serious disadvantage. At the very least they could be forthcoming about catchup features although none of these would increase sales.
Ironic they had a significant public lead before Vision Pro was available yet, do nothing of the sort for upcoming FCP features. So "secretive" isn't even an excuse anymore.
Heck a simple, "We're looking at a variety of AI-based additions to FCP and we think you'll be happy" would be enough to show they're forward-looking and innovative.
Like most trends, they start from influencers or some form of hierarchy...the trendy thing to do now is to use Resolve and I would argue most people making that switch are because of the "influence" more so than anything pragmatic
I started using DaVinci in 2014 alongside PP and dropped using PP completely in 2018, before any ‘influencers’ started making the switch.
The pragmatic reasons for the switch is as Matt says, you have an all in one solution which is extremely important for me a more high end editor. I can (obviously) do my color grading anytime I want and it appears on my edit timeline, but also when I need to do some light VFX work, it is just a click away in the Fusion tab. No need for plugins or roundtripping, just go in and do your wireremoval, paint out objects, track objects or any other advanced VFX.
If I need to export 16 channels of audio for a particular broadcaster, such as two separate 5.1 exports or organize my fx tracks onto certain busses, use audio analyzers or any other audio tools, the Fairlight tab is a full fledged DAW.
DaVinci is a *beast* of program that many advanced editors have been seeking for really advanced work, without having to search for and spend extra money on plugins.
Idk what they plan to do about it but I’m jumping on the Davinci train for some practice in the meantime. FCPX has been great for me but I’m almost over the wait.
One of the only videos I don't agree with you😊 my son and I film weddings and a while ago we wanted to find the best Editor fast and easy so we did one wedding on premier next wedding. We would do on Final Cut Pro next wedding. We would do on da Vinci resolve and so on my son actually liked Adobe premier the best, but it took so long and crashed so many times that he had to keep going on Final Cut Pro because of the speed, at least on a Mac and stability. It was also great to cancel another subscription 😊
Thumbs up because I think you brought up a great point at the end: FCP is a much better option for people that are almost exclusively working on Macs than those that have to go back and forth between Mac OS and Windows. :)
My studio has several computers and at the moment the fastest desktop in it is a PC with a modern GPU and the fastest laptop is somewhat older Mac. The discrete GPU support on the Windows side in Premiere Pro and Resolve is often better than the Apple silicon integrated GPU support on Mac OS (which means in an absolute sense my fastest renders and timeline are on my PC in PP or Resolve right now). But the Apple silicon integrated GPU support is typically better in FCP than Premiere Pro or Resolve (as it should be given the opportunity Apple has to optimize for their own hardware). :)
Long story short, if you want to see Resolve or Premiere Pro at their best right now, I’d suggest a Windows system for comparing that (the price to performance since AMD’s 7800 XT launched in particular has been pretty excellent in both PP and Resolve). The Apple silicon hardware support in FCP is probably one of the biggest features that wasn’t getting discussed in this video.

I edit in Final Cut. But CapCut has amazing effects that my customers need. So I often have to do the adjustment in Capcut, why apple?
as a full time editor for lots of shows commercials etc I use all 3. but FCP is the fastest and most reliable then divinchi the adobe which is not as reliable
It took forever for FCPX to include a LUT tool.
FCPX works fine for me, but seeing how Davinci has developed with much better tracking, time to learn another software.
To add, Premier Pro sucks, there is bug even in the subtitles. Speechless
I love the magnetic timeline but other than that I'm glad i left FCP and went to Davinci best decision....although I miss the magnetic timeline and it just makes cutting so much easier, but everything else its just so far behind resolve
My FCPX has not updated for over a year now. Because I'm still happy on a 27" iMac Intel Core i7. The 24" iMac M3 sitting on the next desk isn't really cutting it. There are worse problems for Apple than to update FCPX. Like: the whole ecosystem isn't right any more.
I jumped from an Intel Mac to a M2 Mac Studio, night and day difference. It flys
@@neilrocks25 for me, it’s faster in computing many little things. But for larger tasks like rendering, I barely notice a difference in speed, compared to the 10 year old i7. On the other hand, the smaller screen slows me down way more, than the faster cpu could compensate, and audio is horrible to listen to on that machine. That’s kind of the situation.
@@EverydayRoadsterit’s not just computing speed it’s the ability to work on files without having to load proxy’s it’s so smooth something I did not have before it’s a completely different experience to a 4K 10bit timeline.
Plus less voltage and heat. It’s a huge jump in workflow.
I have a large monitor and use monitors / headphones and an audio interface.
A video about the plugins the people complaining are missing would be interesting.
I love FCP and I'm not willing to go to a clumsy app for editing.
it's short sited by apple. FCPx editors have to buy Mac. With the whole debacle of the Mac Pro over the last 10 years apple promised they would update pro users and they haven't
I work everyday in Final Cut. Love the rock solid stability. The only thing I would like to have is something more like a PluralEyes option rather than the way it currently works. But otherwise, I make my living on it.
Everyone used to make noise about Premiere vs final cut. Now no one talks about Final cut its Premiere vs Resolve. The funny thing is Premiere will always be there no matter how much UA-camrs talk down on it
I like FCP and Divinci resolve
Final Cut X gets a lot of hate but I edit the quickest and the most creative on it, The Event Viewer with Keywords and Favorites is a different approach but its just so efficent once you get the hang of it. For wedding same day edits, I feel I can easily be ahead of the deadline on FCP comapred to Premeire and even DaVinci, which took a lot of inspiration Premiere's editing layout.
Now if DaVinci copies the Event Viewer of FCPX...

I wonder if the incentive on the Adobe’s side comes from being a subscription based software… I suppose that’s a better business plan (for the business in this case, not for the user… the user is being ripped off at those subscription prices). Especially me, a hobbyist playing around with a camera and following some editing tutorials for editing a video once a couple of months.
That’s a big reason why I dislike Adobe software, and one of the things that made me go towards Final Cut… one time fee => own the software AND future updates are included, you are not charged extra after a period of time. I hope they won’t change that.
Edit: and I’ve just finished watching the entire video and saw that you actually touched this point also, the subscription vs. one time fee 😁
One thing you may not realize about Adobe is at one point, Adobe, Photoshop in particular was the most pirated software in the world. It was at a point when Fortune 500 companies were pirating it to either help their business or develop products that made them money. So with this history, I can’t blame Adobe for developing a system in which they can assure they won’t get pirated. When Adobe developed their software back in the early 90s, it was unheard of to have a software product that didn’t cost you, but nowadays it’s the name of the game to get started…
I like your videos. Let me make two points. 1-Everything you said I feel is applicable to Apple Motion.
2) However, what was not addressed in your video is, "I reached out to Apple for comment...".

Apple doesn't have to put out major updates because FCPX just works where I feel Adobe is constantly doing patch work updates trying to solve glitches in the system. I've used all the major NLE's I left Adobe because I was sick and tired of all the crashes. All editing systems essentially do the same thing use a system that works for you.
Can they put logic in the program already lol. They need a better audio tools. Keep it standalone of course but make it a part in the program please! 🙏 I switched to DaVinci already I just want Apple to add that and I might come back.
Not true!! I’m super happy with FCPX. Does not crash like premier pro. Doesn’t have bugs. I love FCPX.
100%! zero drama when it comes to FCP. if I relied on some of the adv features of the other NLEs I'd consider it, but it's just not every day i need all that addl stuff. FCP handles majority of my workflow with ease, and the $300 i paid a decade ago sounds much more inviting than paying $700+ per year for continued drama 🤷♂
@@kernzillaI’m NLE agnostic so I don’t have a strong feeling about which one is “best” but your argument about price only applied to Adobe Premiere Pro (I dislike having to pay the subscription for that but do it so I can collaborate with clients using it) and not to Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve (which you buy once for around $300 USD and get all the new versions as well as standalone Fusion versions without additional cost as opposed to a subscription).
For me personally, the biggest issue with Final Cut Pro is that it’s Apple only. I go back and forth between Mac OS and Windows based systems both for myself and my clients all the time, so having software I can use on both means that I’m always able to run it on my fastest hardware. By contrast, any editor that is platform locked (like when I work in Vegas on Windows or collaborate in Mac OS on FCP projects with clients) means that I can’t always take advantage of the fastest hardware in my studio. Some years my Mac systems have been faster and others my Windows PCs have been faster, depending on the timing and the respective system budgets.
That’s why over the years, when it has come to projects where I get to choose the NLE (instead of just matching what a client is working with) I’ve started primarily choosing ones that work on both Windows and Mac OS. I mean, after decades of beta-testing experience, I’m pretty good at making just about any piece of content creation software (3D animation, NLE, DAW, image editing, etc.) crash, so I’m not going to pretend that either Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve don’t crash (especially when I’m running PugetBench testing across a variety of GPUs and drivers.) I’d love it if I couldn’t.
But I can make FCP crash too. Does it happen as often in Premiere Pro? I think it’s probably a little easier to avoid unexpected crashes in FCP than Premiere Pro, but I haven’t really done a tightly controlled comparison. I will say that so far this year (it’s still early) I haven’t had any Premiere Pro crashes outside of benchmarking.
@@kernzillaI mean, DaVinci Resolve is also around the same price as FCP and also a buy once option: your license entitles you to all future versions without additional cost.
Both FCP and Resolve look better than Premiere Pro in that way. But FCP isn’t the only one like that these day.
Fcp is stable doesn’t crash like others. Far more plugins than the other 2. Wait and see if Ai type prompt actually works. Ai screws up faces with some of the standalone photo editors let alone videos editors.. right now lots of hype and how much is useful.
If Apple really want to make money from FC Pro they should make it available for Windows too with a license that allows you to use on your Mac and your Windows machine they could also move it to a subscription service while also keeping the stand alone option just adding way more updates to the sub version, but you're right they really need to sink more money into development and it's not like they're short of cash
Apple has waaaaay too much money to need a subscription model; that would kill them off since DaVinci is non-subscription. It would be a no-brainer to switch. Apple can throw all the money FCP needs without blinking an eye, but won’t for some reason. I think they like the prosumer niche they have it in and don’t feel as though massive upgrades are needed.
FCP never crack for me that the more important thing. Work flow is way faster

You are one of those people who didn't want to use Final Cut X because it was "not professional enough", just to proceed using slow, clunky and buggy Premiere, because more buttons means more professional of course :) With the new updates in the last couple of years FCP have never been better, and is still the best NLE for small, and especially one man band productions. Davinci is just another Windows/Android mindset app which tries to copy Final Cut concepts but they feel like Chinese Mercedes-Benz ripoff :) Bottom line is that whatever you do, FCP will be able to do it faster, everything comes down to that.

nothing can beat the one time price of final cut pro though.
FCP has some great things about it but the one you mentioned only beats Premiere Pro, not DaVinci Resolve. With Resolve you not only buy once and get all the future versions without paying again, but that one time purchase of around $300 USD also gets you both Resolve (with Fusion built-in) and the standalone Fusion app. So DaVinci Resolve either meets or beats that one time price, depending on how you look at it.
Compared to Premiere Pro, both FCP and Resolve have a much lower cost of ownership.
Meanwhile CAPCUT is taking over video editing realm. Everything is simple, reliable, straight foward, free(or really cheap).
some valid points, but don't love FCP any less. perhaps i'm spoiled, but I just couldn't go back to the drama of Premier for the trade-off of some features that I rarely employ. for me, FCP is the perfect combo of performance/features/ergonomics. it might be inferior to a lot of folks, but for vanilla/everyday edits, I couldn't be happier with it and it streamlines bulk of my income. for major league edits, I sub that out to the pros anyway so win-win.
All fair points. Plus, there’s something to be said for additional speed you get out of becoming intimately familiar with one program instead of constantly hopping between them. :) On the NLE side, I still hop a lot (mainly between Premiere Pro and Resolve) depending on who I’m working with but when it comes to the audio side, it’s been really nice to go from having to constantly be up on an array of them (worked at a music tech mag) to doing the bulk of my work in Cockos Reaper for a long time (with only occasional calls to help friends in Logic or Pro Tools).
Maybe PP could learn a lesson from FCP and have more "unexciting" speed and stability updates.....LOL!

I would guess Apple is with FCP for the long haul given their investment in film.
Final Cut keeps me prisoner! I've tried DaVinci and it's amazing, but totally infuriating and linear. FCP keeps it fun-even with its wildly bonkers issues-so I just miss it the entire time I'm using something else. But it is downright sad how unchanged FCP is, especially with the world of AI opening up. Resolve's auto-masking tool is the most Apple thing ever and it should be in FCP. I mean, their computers have dedicated AI chips on them! Apple could've run away with the NLE market if they went full-on with AI.
The guy that got paid by Adobe to create promotional videos for their product speaking negatively about their competition is not biased at all…

Hit the nail on the head with the beta versions adobe really making it feel like we are a part of the process I switched from FC to Premiere about 6 months ago and I couldn’t go back!

I heard some show was recently edited in final cut pro 7..... this sounds like a complaining video. People are always asking for updates they never use.
I mean, to be fair, that has more to do with the things Apple got rid of when they went to FCP X that some people got really good at using than it does to do with how timeless FCP 7 is. I remember so many professional editors complaining about that transition in my circles back when it happened.
But as a more general point, if you get really, really good at using just about any piece of content creation software, then there’s a significant cost to jumping ship in terms of getting to that level in something new.
To use an audio software analogy, one of the first DAWs I really enjoyed using was Logic back in the eMagic days. If you spent years getting used to getting the most out of that routing environment, then there’d be a learning curve going to software with a completely different routing approach, like Cockos Reaper and would have to put in some time to figure out how to do the same thing. But if someone had never used either one, then they could usually learn the Reaper routing more quickly than the Logic one.
So for the person who got to be really fast in Logic, it would probably make sense to stay in Logic as opposed to going through a period of being slower in Reaper, because also the Reaper advantages (like wider plug-in support and performance) might not be worth the transition time either.

Shhhh, Don't tell them to go to subscription model. It's the last piece of common decency in the world that Final Cut Pro works like it does. If it goes to subscription, how could I possibly justify paying for it when I already have to pay Adobe to edit photos on software I don't even like very much? I hope if the wave of pro chat takes Final Cut Pro to an alternate future reality that Apple grandfather's out the existing scenario to leave amateurs like myself in peace.
I hope so too but having had to work in a mixed environment for decades at this point (Windows and Mac OS) I wouldn’t bet on Apple going too far to grandfather in their existing users or maintain consistency/compatibility with newer offerings.
From Logic to Quicktime I’ve had to spend so many hours over the years helping clients deal with compatibility issues when Apple brought out new updates that broke compatibility with old software and plug-ins. Reminds me of the lengths I had to go through for clients to get them to be able to keep working on legacy projects from Pro Tools (they won’t even open at all in recent versions) as compared to still being able to open some of the earliest Cockos Reaper projects in the newest versions.
Crossing my fingers that Apple keeps the old pricing model so that this isn’t an issue. If it ever becomes an issue, DaVinci Resolve is a “buy once and get all future versions” option for about $300 that is a lot easier on the wallet than Adobe’s model.
Can't stand Final Cut Pro. Much prefer Premiere and Davinci Resolve, much more robust, feature rich programmes.
feature rich yes. If you by robust mean stable then no with regards to Premiere which is known for its instability options.
@mejlgaardbliddal Premiere doesn't crash that often for me but I've just transfered to Resolve which is very stable. Features and ease of workflow is most important to me. Final cut comes last in those departments.
How is Premiere better for ease of workflow? Did you spend enough time in FCP to get proficient at it? It works in a way different from other NLEs.
@rsmith02 colour correcting and colour grading is much easier in Premiere Pro. You can quickly change work spaces with 1 button for whatever stage of the workflow you are at. Whether it's audio, effects, titles.

I’m sorry but this is just propaganda. You’ve clearly been paid by opposing companies to try and depose others from wanting to use final cut. Even stated in your video that you had been paid by Adobe in the past to do Instagram videos for them so it makes perfect sense that this is nothing more than that. as a proud Final Cut Pro editor, I’m not just being butt hurt here either, so I don’t even go there and replies.
I have zero faith in your video reviews on anything. You’re putting down Final Cut Pro x since day one of release. FCP is lighting fast with zero crashes. FCP just gets out of the way to focus on flow and story. I could not care less about updates and if I had it on a really older version I’d still be happy. I don’t need updates to make me a better story teller and if all your looking for is updates thinking it will make you a better editor than your problem not the NLE. I see you on tic tok joking about sitting around waiting for stuff to render but as a Final Cut user I don’t even know what waiting for renders is. Premier just crashes, resolve more stable has a massive learning curve leading to slow work flow. Final Cut if learned correctly and uses correctly is lighting fast. I don’t need any update, I don’t need any AI to do my work for me. I don’t believe in any auto editing or anything like that I simply learn to edit myself and practice practice practice. You talk about plug ins without saying what plugins your “friends” are getting to make it work. I edit weddings, I don’t need special effects. I can grade and edit in Final Cut with non problem so again I don’t know what you’re talking about. I think you just don’t know what you’re talking about because you don’t use Final Cut. I know you don’t use it because you keep talking about your “friends” so how do you think you have an opinion on it and I’m just sick and tired of you putting it down for 10’years. Put me in a room with you editing the same wedding with you on resolve and me on FCP and I’ll be done in probably half the time it takes you

This video literally mentions the issues final users are experiencing. I can vouch for this as I have felt all these issues. Doesn’t matter if it’s a feeling or functionality, it’s still an issue Final Cut users experience.
@@Whiteinrevery in the end, these are just tools and one uses the most appropriate tool for the job. Just because you selected a certain tool for your needs doesn’t mean other tools are less. One can clearly tell from the comments. Therefore, I just think this post is just a lot of fluff. Nothing was accomplished here. I learned absolutely nothing that helps my endeavor. Why waste the energy? The only thing I can think of is that Matt, needed to make a post to keep the algorithm happy and this was the next best idea. So be it! I forgive Matt. He puts out good posts and I will continue to follow him. This post just rubbed me the wrong way and I am expressing that fact. All is good and we will continue to use our favorite editors!
