"shore leave" is one of the main reasons i started playing guitar, love this Tom waits trilogy so much
Awesome timing: I'm seeing Marc Ribot play tonight with Ceramic Dog! Can't wait to dig into this lesson after the show!
Amazing - lucky you! Enjoy the show.
I worked at a youth hostel in Marin County, California years ago. The hostel manager told me that a couple of years before, they had a Cub Scout troop stay overnight. One of the parents/chaperones was Tom Waits. (Imagine the other chaperones reaction.) At one point my boss was in the men's room and Waits walked in and used the only other urinal. The hostel was a former Army hospital so the urinals were so close to each other you'd have to be careful not to bump elbows. But as is the case in men's rooms, no words were exchanged; no elbows were bumped. His near brush with fame. 😎
Riveting tale
Oddly serendipitous. I’ve been relistening to rain dogs on repeat for the last couple weeks. This record, bone machine and bad as me are my favs of his. One of the very few truly unique voices (literally and aesthetically) in lyrical music
It is October so maybe that explains it lol
I thank you for getting to Tom Waits at last. Please feel free to do more; much more. I absolutely love Tom Waits- from the early bar singer/songwriter stuff to the bonkers noize, there's no bit of his vast, diverse catalogue that I don't think is brilliant.
Great song choice and a fantastic lesson! I was lucky enough to see Waits play this live in 2004 with Ribot on guitar - it was the best live show I've ever seen.
This is great, thank you. Can't wait to see what's coming for Halloween, and we must be due for the (roughly) annual Johnny F'n Marr Day soon!
One of my favorite Waits songs, too. Love Ribot. His book, Unstrung, is worth reading. Glad to be a Patreon for your great lessons.
Now l have to get the book (had no idea!!).
Thanks mate.
Great lesson, Adrian, and love how you continually feature incredible artists who in most cases are too often overlooked. Thank you!
Great choice (again) Adrian!!
You had Ribot's tone nailed...luv the mans work, sometimes its just a note or two in songs (like Goin Out West) yet its perfect!!
Neighbours are gonna hear me twangin for the next few days.... thankyou!
I like the way you present player solutions as strategies, rather than "tricks". It's both refreshing and creative.
And allows your audience to apply these "strategies" in other contexts. J'adore.
Boom search and you shall receive. Thank you for putting this together. I just looked for this this morning and here you are one month old.
I'm incredibly grateful for your exceptional lessons. I always learn so much more than just the song because of your eclectic taste in music.
This video finally made me sign up for your Patreon page... thanks for all you do
One of my fav TW albums too especially the guitar playing.
Amazing song choice! Love your channel man, keep it up
Fantastic choice! Fantastic lesson as usual! Love your videos❤
Greatest day ever for guitar lessons with Adrian teaching a Tom Waits song, Andy with a favorite from Tom Petty and Ellen with one of Creedence's best. Thanks all!
New sub here. First heard this badass song in the Jarmusch flick "Down By Law" with Tom Waits.
Yeah, the Rain Dogs is his best work IMHO, but anyway the passion in the guitar here is the whole reason I play.
Good ear my friend.
Couldn’t believe it when I saw the thumbnail, thank you so much . massive tom waits fan , and love this song and it’s great solo .
LOVE THIS SONG! I used to play this live with my guitar duo.
Beautiful song, beautiful guitar play and beautiful guitar lesson. Thank you.
Thank you. Another great breakdown and lesson as usual. I always come away from your videos inspired to play.
My favourite youtube guitar guy discussing my favourite Tom Waits song from the iconic Rain Dogs album - you made my day!!!
It would be great if you did something from Real Gone, which has great Ribot work
WOW... Thank you for this one, Adrian !!!!!!!!!!!
I have an overlooked but perfectly fitting ACPG lesson: anything from Love Forever Changes album
Love Rain Dogs and particularly this tune. Really informative, deep dive into the theory and structure. Great insights and playing, thanks.
This was one of my favourite albums as a teenager in the 80s. I think I became a bit of a Tom Waits fan after seeing Down By Law. So so long ago.
Thank you yet again. My associates in noise making will be informed of this and Jockey Full of Bourbon will be in our set soon. First saw Tom Waits way back in Sydney in 1979..... 'game changer' wasn't a word back then but you get the idea of the effect it had....
Awesome. I was thinking samba. Rain Dogs is my favourite Tom Waits album too. I read once where someone had referred to Marc Ribot's playing as being "wrong". To which he replied if its wrong, why does it sound good to me? A lot to do with our desire to classify, compartmentalise notes into scales and "Right" notes i think. More power to him I say!
Reminds me of the opening to the great TV show Black books. Which is also fun to play.
It does!
Luv Black Books (or anything Linehan puts his fingers on).
I've never checked who plays it... not surprise me if it was Bill Bailey... man plays everything!!
It was Bill Bailey! Love that theme, it's pure wino
I came across this track last year as I was positive it was related in some way to BB! The them was a by Johnathan Whitehead (aka Trellis) who did a lot of C4 music around that time (and more besides). The theme's only short, but it would be good one to figure out an extended version though
That is a really beautiful warm reverb sound you've got going on there - really warms me cockles :)
Inspiring! Especially your comment about playing with abandon and passion. It's easy to get pulled into playing very standard bluesy rock licks when you're learning lead.
Top notch, again. Thank.
marc ribot is the greatest, but i already know this one, would love to see more. the tone you have is identical to the recording wow
Great lesson. Thanks!
One of the best instructors I’ve come across
Great song!
Ribot AND Quine play on that record!
Yes 🙌🏼 The more Ribot the better ❤ Thank you
This is glorious sir !
The Holy Moly of Ribot!
Right on!
Besides the great track you’re dissecting for us, it's wonderful to hear you speak about how some of these players set you off on a different path away from virtuosity!
Must be difficult at times to come up with what you believe would be a good lesson. Don’t think you’ll hear many complaints from your listeners. Keep up the good work!
Legend song and many thanks
Marc Ribot was heavily influenced by legendary Cuban "tresero" and composer Arsenio Rodríguez. I've been listening to both of them lately and Ribot's covers of classic Arsenio Rodríguez tunes are brilliant!
Please do a tutorial on “When the Springtime Comes Again.” Your videos are the only way i can learn Fahey properly.
Please do some more Tom Waits!!
More Ribot! Glad to see his playing explained.
Have You consider doing some guitar lesson of Niko Wenner from Oxbow? Similar tier to Marc Ribot or Rowland S Howard but more rooted in heavier music. Something of Steve Albini would be welcomed too:)
Love you Adrian x
A really interesting lesson very cool
Hello Adrian,
I am a new subscriber. ❤
Thanks for this and all of your lessons, our musical tastes greatly overlap. I appreciate that you cover a lot of pieces that emphasize panache over precision- keep it up!🎉
Nice lesson once again! Thank you so much for this channel, you're the best. Hey what about The Sweetest Chill by Siouxsie and the Banshees? There's some tricky parts I can't figure out
Hell yes!
'Goin' Out West' would be another great track to do... also a beautiful old track of his called 'Blue Valentines'
I love Robert Quine, I had forgotten he played on this record
I've been waiting forever.
I want candy.
Hard to imagine Rain Dogs without Ribot but Bill Frisell was Wait's first choice but wasn't available. Would love to see that alternate universe.
Awesome! Could you show blue valentine, from Tom waits also, I’m struggling with it. Thanks !! Great video
That was cool
Great video! Would you ever consider looking into any Sonic Youth? They have some great interesting guitar work and some wierd tunings, thought it might be a cool one to see you do. Keep up the great work
Nice
Great lesson and choice of song. Would you consider doing something from one of Tom Verlaine's solo albums, like Down On The Farm?
Hell yeah
more RIBOT pls !
Hey Adrian, I’m a fan of your work and have learned a lot from you. Can you teach us how to play Hallowed be my name? for your Halloween special lol, cheers mate
“Rain Dogs” is an amazing album.
Again, Adrian picking the best tunes
How about a breakdown of RT's guitar parts in Fairport Convention's version of Reno, Nevada?
Would love an "Alice" lesson, just can't get the timing on it at all.
Saint Adrian strikes again, we're not worthy
Adrian based as always 💯
Jim Jarmusch !!!
What film is this song in?
... #OMFGZILLA ... YES
Great track. For some reason, I feel the need to go to a filthy bookshop and be insulted by its Irish owner...
He said I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy. Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day. Not by works that I have done, nothing but the blood of Jesus. Romans 3: 20-28kjb. I'm also a Marc Robot fan. Robert Breaker how to know you're saved is a great video. This video is also very entertaining. You got just the right touch on the guitar. I'm trusting in nothing but the blood of Jesus to pay for my sins to keep me out of hell.
🤔
😂
You win "Creepy Weirdo post of the day'
Mate! I'm a pretty weird sorta bloke.. but l can't outdo that!
You win fella!!
@@baabaabaa-yp2jh I really appreciate that. You are very right It's a very weird life that I live because I go to a very good small church but I don't completely fit in with church people and I used to hang out with stoners. But I almost died a little over a year ago and it changed my life and all my stoner friends except one have ditched me because I've started doing this. I can't even mention the bands that were my favorite. Seth Putnam on The defenders of the hate album was my favorite. My best friend died of heart failure from using alcohol as pain medicine. Then I almost died from heart failure because I didn't stop drinking even after my friend died and the same thing almost happened to me. I have a weird heartbeat now and that with the nerve damage in my back and legs reminds me everyday. You don't have to change at all to be saved. You just have to accept the blood of atonement of Christ Jesus to pay for your sins by believing. After you are saved if you are good you earn rewards and if you are bad you suffer loss. I used to idolize the most weirdest people in our little city and go out to the local jam punk bar or whatever. I'm 36 years old now. Somebody put PCP on my weed before I hit puberty. I have had a really weird life and I stayed away from hard drugs for the most part except for alcohol. August 2022 is the last drink. I vape cannabis flower for pain. I am one weird lonely old skateboarder. Hope to see you in the cloud soon.
This is pretty good, but the best version I’ve heard was from Joe Bonamassa
