Thanks, Sue! Very been playing a lot of fancy stuff for a long time, but turnarounds are a real weakness for me. It all just clicked watching this video-now I need to work on it! Very helpful!
Thanks for the lesson Sue. First song that popped into my brain was American Women by the Guess Who. Intro acoustic turnaround before the song takes off.
Met her at Wilbert’s in CLE back in 1993…. Great show, sweet lady….she turned me on to her new Boss tuner and I bought one the following week….pretty sure Hubert Sumlin was on the bill that night too…Sue was amazing! My band plays her version of Off The Hook….
Thanks for this. You are a great teacher. I learned, and then promptly forgot, a couple turnarounds so have been the guy who noodles all over the neck with single note leads and four note chords but without ever re-setting with a turnaround. I just bookmarked this video for future reference. Now I'm going to turn around and go play my guitar.
Real nice the way you explained that! Great fingerstyle, very smooth in your technique, and I've always wanted to have a classic paisley print tele! Intros and turnarounds have always been a weakness for me. I've learned a few over the years, but never had some of the fancier ones in my repertoire. I mostly use turnarounds coming from a jazz sense of chordal harmony, like a back cycle. I've always loved ALL styles of Blues though! I would say Lightnin' Hopkins is the most prolific I've heard with sooo many ways of playing intros, rhythm grooves and turnarounds. And of course my favorite, Johnny Winter would be another one! That guy had the most incredible Blues chops and a ton of ways of playing many styles of blues. I especially loved the way he played the more folk style with Muddy!
Took your suggestion and checked out Freddie King's "Hideaway"....wow...very cool stuff. I guess I have a tendency to just focus on the modern day white blues players like SRV, Rory Gallagher, Eric Clapton etc. Now I see I need to dig a little deeper into the originals...thanks for putting that out.
She really tips her hat to Freddie King and as it should be. Her playing reminds me of the late and great Johnny Winter ,he really had it right too. HAVE MERCY!
Inquiring minds want to know , isn't that Brand News Tele that your teaching good habits? And did Fender gift one of my favorite players with a signature? Love ya Sue ... Keep bending those strings, you always inspire me and all who listen to ya.
Or ... You can make variations of all that so they don't sound "expected" shall we say? Nice tone on that Tele! And "Hideway" was a popular song for what few bands there were in Jacksonville FL back in the very early '60s, IIRC.
The shit we've forgotten...until you're in THAT SPOT. And still no matter what, Da Blooze is the hardest, and easiest genre to play. And, as Sue is illustrating, she's laying out the KISS principle. Keep It Simple, Stupid! Shit works everytime!
Many of these turnarounds have been featured in Robert Johnson's songs. And they can also be used in introductions, such as the opening sequence of "Crossroads."
Yeah, thanks for saying "turnarounds" a hundred times and that we need them and that you know some, but now i still gotta find someone who can really explain them to me.
Not sure I watched the same video that all these comments refer to. Clearly she's a great blues guitarist. But all I got out of it was 'work on your turnarounds' so you don't sound scaly. Couldn't see what she was playing. Heard some 7th chords. Not intended to provide instruction just information
Your handle is interesting because “Wahrheit” in German means truth or reality or accuracy (depending on the context) and yet your handle which can translate as “the truth makes you free” is followed by a completely stupid comment - especially since we all heard with our own ears just how talented a guitarist and skilled musician she is. Du bist ein echter idiot.
Great insight from a superb musician who is generous in the best tradition of Blues players.
I seen Sue in concert up and real close. She is a fantastic entertainer.
Her playing is so soulful. Great lesson.
That was an absolute pleasure to watch and listen to....a keeper for me.
Using a turnaround to go from the 1 to the 4 was a lightbulb moment for me 😊!
An engaging video, presented in a relaxed manner by a musician with a light yet captivating touch, good stuff.
I saw that pattern guitar in Hawaii in the 90's. It really is unforgettable! Thanks for the tips!
Classics! Nice to have these all presented. And sweet Tele!
Incredibly talented musician, thanks for the lesson!
Sue gives great blues guitar lessons. Thanks, Sue!
Great player! Great teacher!
Thank you Sue Foley. This is such a great video on Blues Turnarounds.
Thanks, Sue! Very been playing a lot of fancy stuff for a long time, but turnarounds are a real weakness for me. It all just clicked watching this video-now I need to work on it! Very helpful!
Me too, ty Sue much appreciated
Thanks for the lesson Sue. First song that popped into my brain was American Women by the Guess Who. Intro acoustic turnaround before the song takes off.
Never thought about turnarounds that way. Thanks. Great vlog! 😀
I saw Sue Foley play Woodsongs in Lexington KY and met her afterwards. She’s an incredibly versatile player and plays a lot more than blues.

Classy Lady playing the blues. 😊
❤ thank you Sue!!

an under appreciated master
Really informative and fun-to-watch tutorial--thank you!
Thank you for this grest lesson, really got something out of this and think you are fantastic!!Love your playing❤
A really good lesson, and just what I needed. Thanks a million.🌺
Love this, thanks Sue.
Love the turnaround between the I and IV chords!
So smooth sounding.
It’s like buttah!
I’ve enjoyed several Sue Foley shows and would like to see more!
Thank you, very helpful and done in a way so that it makes sense
Love learning here.
🤯 thx to you Sue and GW for this insight
Thank you, Sue.
Good stuff Sue. Thanks
Great lesson. People like simple and interesting. Anything they can group sing or emphasize. It makes them feel part of the song..
Some some Sue Foley. Sure wish that she would come to Gainesville, FL.
Great informative video Suzie Q ❤
Beautiful tone
Your playing and tutorial are great but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone perfectly, and aesthetically, matched with a guitar.

The turnaround she starts at 1:30 through 1:38 was used by Skip James and later by Eric Clapton on I'm So Glad.
Thank you Sue
Saw her at Massey Hall in Toronto, great musician, don’t play guitar but enjoyed the video.
Awesome. Thanks!
Lovely guitar
First exposure to Blues
You opening for Johnny Winter in Grand Rapids MI Club Eastbrook in the 90’s.
Mind blown.
Wish I had a tiny bit of your talent , your awesome Irish girl !!
If she were a guy would you have said "you're awesome Irish boy?" The diminution kind of undercuts the compliment...
@@Bob.Silverstein I only meant to compliment the lady , and I was commenting to her , I really don't think it's any of your business Mr. Diminutive
Damn lady, thanks that was very helpful!
From Brazil 🇧🇷 ♥️ ❤️ 💙
Love your TONE!
I always use the bb king ‘thrill is gone’ turn around. Works every time. It’s the one used on the Doobie Bros ‘long train running’
You can even hear it in the playing of Robby Krieger from the Doors quite a bit.
Thank you for your really helpful and accessible lesson. Blues turnarounds are a weak spot for me at jam sessions. This is good homework! ☮️
Thank you!

Thanks, very useful.
💙👍🏽👍🏽 Great stuff!
The only thing I could add, would be to play something interesting and different on the 5 chord before the turnaround.
this is fun, i don't do blues really, but i'll try these out.
Turnarounds can happen in any style.
@@RideAcrossTheRiver ok 👍
@@reghunt2487 I mean, "The Blue Danube" has lots of them.
She really tips her hat to Freddie King and as it should be. Her playing reminds me of the late and great Johnny Winter ,he really had it right too. HAVE MERCY!
I always think of John Fogerty on "Before You Accuse Me"!
Great guitarist 🌟
Appropriate application, like using words in a conversation appropriately. Thank you very much.
My buddy Mike has that axe. It’s really nice. Japanese Pink Paisley Tele.
Nice guitar ❤
She's got a good instructional video out there
Inquiring minds want to know , isn't that Brand News Tele that your teaching good habits?

Love ya Sue ...
Keep bending those strings, you always inspire me and all who listen to ya.
Two and three string chords are prized and easy to play.
Cool
Thanks Sue.Also useful on bass.
I have some of Sue's albums
Incredible thank you
good vid
☘️❤
Best vocals for "Money" had your name attached to it but can't find it anywhere. Any clues?
Tx !
I wish that you would include some graphics showing the finger placement
Or ... You can make variations of all that so they don't sound "expected" shall we say? Nice tone on that Tele! And "Hideway" was a popular song for what few bands there were in Jacksonville FL back in the very early '60s, IIRC.
She said that, or at least alluded to it. It's a good point
wow @SueFoleyOfficial is so good. so many ideas. Thanks @GuitarWorld
Dig it thanks
Un grand-mères +++ !!!
Is there a diagram you can show on how to do this ? 🤷🏾♂️ Beginner. Thank you 😊
Excellent, informative, tasteful. Glad I stopped to listen.
Me too!! Woo hoo!!
This is pretty good, but the best instructional video on turnarounds I've seen is Ronnie Earl's
The real tie in is throwing in the chromatic bass walk up to the five chord.
The shit we've forgotten...until you're in THAT SPOT.
And still no matter what, Da Blooze is the hardest, and easiest genre to play.
And, as Sue is illustrating, she's laying out the KISS principle.

Jimmy Page had a skin like that on his Telecaster
Many of these turnarounds have been featured in Robert Johnson's songs. And they can also be used in introductions, such as the opening sequence of "Crossroads."
This really turns me on to turn around anytime. Thanks ❤😊
aint wrong
Yeah, thanks for saying "turnarounds" a hundred times and that we need them and that you know some, but now i still gotta find someone who can really explain them to me.
Cool countrylady
Blues Lady
Is Sue Irish🇮🇪
The color suits you girl...Dont turn it around......cha cha cha
Skip at 1:32. I wonder if she got bleeped :)
Tasty....
pretty sure there's no backwards in music,,, there is descending though. if you go downstairs, are you going backwards ? no, forward , down.

Shit, No Tabs.
LOL! Seriously?
perfect to practise your ears :)
@@michaelkarlsson5966 ;o)
It’s hard to see what you’re doing with your left hand in many of your turnarounds.
Novel idea to learn music: try using your ear to know if its right
Precisely what I was thinking.
Women playing blues sounds like food without seasoning.
Let's see your Guitar World instructional video on turnarounds & we'll all compare.
Seriously? You feel threatened enough by ladies to say something that wrong?
Textbook troll comment. Your mother must be proud.
that is a really dumb comment/opinion.
