- Mario Kart 8 deluxe is the by far most sold game on the nintendo switch. While that obviously means it’s really good, in fact it’s my favorite mario kart game, that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. So in today's video I’m going to be covering my nitpicks for Mario kart 8 Deluxe along with picking some from the comments as well! These range from characters, items, battle mode, racing, the booster course pass dlc and more. So join me as I cover some of my nitpicks for mario kart 8 deluxe!

Ok so I literally just remembered another nitpick, I think it'd be cool if the game told you your time after finishing a race like it did in past games. Definitely would've included this one in the video if I remembered

Oh yeah I completely agree with this, sometimes I feel like I won or lost with a .01 seconde difference but I can't see it
Biggest annoying thing about this game is being online and getting hit by someone else's dragged item because you were within 50 feet of them.
Or worse, getting hit by nothing at all.

I love that they’ve added this to the game, as this adds so much more replayability and flexibility to the racing experience!
Also, I can now get rid of that pesky lighting shock when I play!!
Pro tip: Don't make the blue shell the only item...
Although I really hope they add an option of "Normal Chances" and "Equal Chances" so If you have say, blue shells and bananas, you can select equal chances to get 50/50 on each item, rather than it basically being Bananas only

I think the reason Tour tracks like Ninja Hideaway and Sky High Sundae aren’t labeled is because they aren’t based on real life cities and don’t give off the feeling of a world tour.
I thought Sky High Sunday *was* an original track while Ninja Hideaway wasnt? The fact that it’s inconsistent is weird.

huh, nobody ever commented on the lack of challenge modes like in DS. the boss battles and event races in that mode were fun, i miss that mode.
And they can even do like weekly challenges and leaderboards with the missions

However it can be a nitpick if you where saying something like "8 Deluxe dosent have alot of Game Modes" because then it is more opened and just something that your being picky about because that I'd what nitpicks are.

We definitely need more characters, specifically costumes. (I REALLY want to see a purple or grey shy guy.)

finally, somebody appreciates gray shy guys, even though they are litterally only mentioned in Mario Super Sluggers and a couple of Yoshi games.
I hate how red shells follow you through flying areas in the game, and it’s almost impossible to make a turn around a wall and have it break like in mkwii
Right! Like, you should get a break from a red shell if you go through a cannon or a massive ramp. Red shells in this game are so aggressive about finding their target.
That's what I hate about Wii. Makes red shells literally useless

@@seamino8329 Lmao no. Simply running into a wall gets rid of a red shell. And every track has a sharp turn, so you can always escape it.
But they balance it out by having more powerful items like stars and bullet bills that hit you backwards

8:30 In the recent Nintendo Direct when they previewed tracks we actually saw that one of the new tracks is getting anti gravity in a similar way to the base game (aka one part of the track is anti-grav in a spot that makes sense and you switch while racing) so anti-gravity is seemingly going to be better utilized with future tracks
5:19 I agree, And they should make a double dash sequel because in that game, you can actually switch which powerup you want to used In whichever order.
And the characters had specific power ups per character. DD was the best!

This video adged so well, with now anti gravity in the booster course pass and items you can turn on and off!
And Birdo will be coming to the game in the next wave!
I wish they gave you the option to remove some items from the rotation, the Blue Shell gets particularly annoying at times
And if not, add "No spiny shells", "No coins" and "No spiny shells or coins" as options, and while at it, fix "Mushrooms only" and add "Mushrooms and coins only" as an option.
Yeah I feel like an item switch like Super Smash Bros might help tremendously for custom matches

I’m glad that a lot of these things are actually being improved on like lightning while gliding, custom items and DLC characters
My nitpicks:
- You can't return back to the characters, settings or tracks on the Versus mode. You have to go all the way back to the menus to select those.
- Characters should flash after hitting the items. There are some invincibility frames after hits and it looks so stupid if the item hits soon after and it doesn't do anything.
Surprised no one mentioned versus races max course count not being upped to account for the dlc. This is one i rlly hope gets fixed by the time the dlc is finished bc it'll suck if i cant play a 96 course session with every track once the dlc pass is complete
Only thing I can assume is that they don't want to be responsible for someone completing 96 courses in one sitting, which would probably take around 5-6 hours (and the undocked Switch battery wouldn't be able to last that long, even starting at 100%). It would still be a great option, though, especially after the final wave of DLC comes out.
Maybe they do it for your own health. Don't play 96 races in a row, that's insane.
Mario Kart 8 was originally locked to 32 races, even with the additional DLC. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe increased this to 48 when the DLC was included.
But now with all the extra DLC, they still aren't increasing the max number for each releaes (56, 64, 72, 80, 88, 96).
Perhaps they can't bother making this number dynamic based on if you had the DLC or not; perhaps they didn't add 48 to Mario Kart 8 originally because they couldn't bother checking if you had all DLC.
So if they ever made a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Plus release, with all 96 tracks included, then you will likely be able to choose 96.
(1:20) Since -most- all tracks are identical, I think there should be an option for mirror mode on time trial, but the times count towards the same normal track. -For the few tracks that are actually different in mirror mode, the should have a separate time for that mode.-

both ninja hideaway and sky high sundae were made for tour first. the files for both have been in tour for a few years now, no track has been made exclusively for 8D booster pack. they were all developed for tour and later ported.
Anything that isn’t an original track in Tour was ported from 7 to Tour

Wave 3's graphics look even better than Wave 2, _and_ Merry Mountain not only has some anti-gravity section (not an entire race), it also sees the return of the half pipes, which are trickable.
Same with maple treeway

A personal nitpick of mine is How the Triple banana doesn't form a trail behind you driver, and instead circles them like a triple shell would. When it worked the old way, it made it one of the best defensive items in the series in my opinion, and now it's not nearly as useful.
You can just... throw a banana down before a red shell hits you.
I highly doubt that Ninja Hideaway was made for the booster course because it came around a year earlier in Tour
What I really dislike about the item system is that you can get super passive items at times, I usually play with my brother and I can't tell you how many times we have been in situations like getting a banana in 3rd or a single green in 5th
There is an option to prioritize more frantic items iirc, though it might only be in battle mode.

I've always thought that character variations such as cat Peach should be variations (like with Yoshi's and Shy Guy's colors), not independent characters. That was the model in Mario Sports Mix and it seems more reasonable than having two Marios racing against each other.

The way I see it, a game like mario kart or smash should have unlockable characters but also have a simple code on the main menu and title screen that would temporarily unlock all content until you close the game.
What's the point of them being unlockable if you can just cheat?
@@doraemon402 to make the single player experience rewarding while making hardcore/competitive players able to setup a tournament easily (don't reveal the code in-game so that most people still play to unlock)
@@doraemon402 So players can still try and unlock everything while still having an option with multiplayer. Mario Golf 64 has a code like this that unlocks all characters and all courses but one, but there are still unlock conditions if you want to do it legit.
My big nit pick is
No new characters in the dlc like come on they can literally just port the tour characters over modders have been doing this for a while now and it's disappointing they never done this officially

The item disabling thing would probably be a problem to implement, as the way the item roulette works requires them to already have separate formulas for every preset.
Funny thing is that they allow custom items now, so either they just made a general item roulette calculation, or it was always possible to customise and they just didn't made a menu option for it until now.

I missed the post but a MASSIVE nitpick I have is that there's no option to do an odd number of games in the battle modes, meaning that matches end in a draw a ton. Either make it possible to do an odd number of games or do a tiebreaker if you draw.
I love how most (if not all) of these were fixed in Waves 3 & 4

Huh, funny, Birdo's soon playable...
My biggest nitpick is that whenever anything hits you, you lose the same amount of coins. This just doesn’t feel right to me. A banana spinning you Out is three, and so is a giant, nigh-unstoppable shell of destruction.
10:26 This is so funny to me bc the current SNES Rainbow Road 200cc WR does this too on the first lap but it's WAY more egregious and it's actually kinda funny
Many of these nitpicks were fixed in wave 3 and 4 of the dlc. You can now choose which items you want, you now keep gliding when getting shocked, birdo was added, with another 5 chracters being added (given you do need to buy the dlc to use them...), and I think more.
8:27: merry mountain was announced for wave 3 at the September direct and it showed anti-grav in segments not the entire track. When did you write the script for this?
Why isn’t there a button to swap your item slots, like there was in Double Dash. You could press Z to swap your drivers, and by doing so their held items would switch. It adds so much to the gameplay.

(ninja hideway was classified as new but ig from now on we will be seeing actual new tracks if this pattern continues)
I have the same opinion about unlockable characters in Mario Kart than I have for Super Smash Bros: there should just be an menu option to unlock them all at once. That way, players who want to go through the unlocking process can do so normally, but those who just want to play with their favourites from the get go, lost their original save file over, or need them all unlocked for a tournament or something can just click the option and get everything right away.
not really a nitpick but an addition, i feel like there should be another CC mode. 150 CC feels too slow for me and my dad now, so its probably the same with other players (or just my character combination sucks)
i feel like 200 CC is too hectic for me, bashing into everything and falling off course. so maybe a mix between the two and introducing a new 175 CC will be cool.
i also think that CC could possibly be an unlockable or be used to unlock some other nintendo characters, or the CC could be apart of the booster course pack completely

I’d love 200cc Mirror mode would be a great way to add a couple dozen extra trophies to earn in Grand Prix
My bet is that 200cc mirror mode will be unlocked when all waves come in.

Interesting video! I agree with a lot of the nitpicks you provided. I have three to add, though:
1. Race mode doesn't show the race time. It's useful for comparing your time to other racers', so seeing it gone is withholding information.
2. At the end of a Time Trial, you only see your time, even if it's not better than the local best. You have to see what the best time is before the race starts. Interestingly, this was in the Wii U, but not Switch.
3. The minimap's color was turned to gray between Wii U and Switch, even for Rainbow Road. I really liked the flair the colorful map provided.
You cant change the CC in battle mode!!

That thing usually happens on snes rainbow road, due to the riveting roads section where the thwomps are, I’m pretty sure they made it more generous in 8 DX Since on the Wii U sometimes if your too close to the edge you’ll just clip off and it would suck.

The main problem I had with this game (as well as all MK games starting with MK7) is that when you enter a Cannon, it activates a Glider which pretty much leaves you vulnerable to items (such as if a Lightning is used, you’re pretty much screwed), in prior games you were pretty much invincible when you were in a Cannon, I hope that in the next game, Cannons and Gliders are two separate things. 😬😬😬
one PET PEEVE: with all the babies in the game (some with no presence in the Mario franchise), why no BABY YOSHI?! It would be great to see baby yoshi from SMW make an appearance.

One of my biggest nitpicks is that both the wii u and booster course pass cups don't have custom trophies and have the regular mario kart 8 trophies
As someone living during wave 5, a few of these made me chuckle, mainly custom items and birdo

Also: When it comes to items you should be able to select what items you want and I’ll used mushrooms only as an example even though it’s mushrooms only you still get coins. And back in the original Mario kart 8 I got a green shell in 9th and a banana in 10th

Tbf, Toad Circuit is one of the better beginner courses, they tend to be (understandably) pretty bland, but at least this one has a bit more going on compared to the average
And the Booster Pass is a full second set of courses, they don’t care if the vanilla game already has a specific theme or gimmicks (like beanstalk or traffic), they only care about what’s in the Booster Pass itself, so they probably wanted a beginner course of its own, and Toad Circuit has been in Tour since launch, so they probably went with that one because it was a very easy port
Sky high sundae is still a tour track and the reason nintendo markets them as new is so they can be like "buy this dlc, it adds brand new tracks!"
And they're adding antigrav, in a good way, to merry mountain in wave 3 as well as adding halfpipes

I forgot about this in the original post but I think about it all the time, I SO wish there were volume sliders for music, character voices, and sound effects. Custom sound balancing is a pretty consistent thing in games nowadays and it really sucks we don’t have it in Mario Kart. I just really wanna crank up the music! (Edit: I had a stroke typing that)
Imo this is in a never ending competition with mk Wii for best mario kart game ever. Ds, 7, and double dash all make close seconds

Tour Merry Mountain: “Hold my Eggnog”
there is 1 + side to the fact that Ninja Hideaway, Sky-High Sundae (and likely Merry Mountain) aren't listened as Tour tracks
it helps us with the datamine, to see which couses are Tour City tracks and which are Tour non-City tracks
Oh wow. I'm suprised how many of these did get fixed/ changed in the end with updates. Honestly wasn't expecting much after how wave 1 turned out but beyond that they went above and beyond in alot of ways
For unlockables in party games, I'm partial to locking things but also have an unlock everything cheat code so if you want to play and unlock everything yourself you can do that but if you just want everything from the get-go to play with friends you can do that too.
