Antique fire truck restoration and antique car and truck restoration.
1926 Childs Fire Engine Repairs and Overview
Brand new to the shop is this 1926 Childs fire engine from Madison CT. This truck came in under its own power but needs a lot of help! Items to do are wiring harness and full electrical rebuild, engine tuneup and chassis fluid changes. We do an overview of the entire truck and check out the transfer case bearing removal process and what kind of surprises we found.

Broaching 1929 Waukesha Pulley
Переглядів 191Місяць тому
We go through the process of broaching a keyway in a cast iron pulley. This is one of the specialized things we do here at the shop. We like to repair and restore items instead of throwing them out and replacing them.

1951 Chevy Truck Clutch and Rear Main Seal Repairs
did you happen to film the removal of the torque tube?
you need central air in your shop, I have a 1938 Seagrave 65' ladder truck with a 6cyl International engine that was swapped out sometime in the 60's
He must get all the ladies with that ratty beard
As long as you don't have to lap the seats your good !!! Always hated lapping seats and could never get the Prussian blue off my hands
If it works ot works but as a primarily passenger car mechanic this looks sketchy at best
Hey sorry everybody I misspoke, it's actually Madison Connecticut not Clinton CT. Just wanted to clarify. Sometimes I get lost with so many different fire engines we have coming into the shop each month. 😅
Happy 4th to you.
George wants to be a gear jammer.
Yes he is a huge car and truck guy already!
Had my first run in a 50 Maxim just like that one I was 16
Wow.
Удачи в вашем нелегком труде!❤
What a cool old engine. Very well kept.
The mack has a mag and point/coil. That's pretty cool
I think there is more to timing these engines than just setting with a timing light based on a right hand cylinder. The timing of the two sets of points in each distributor are individually adjustable. The manual describes setting them using a piece of paper to determine the exact moment of points opening; however at the very least if you choose to use a timing light, you need to do it on a left hand cylinder as well as a right hand cylinder, since one set of points in each distributor is for the left bank and one is for the right bank. One set of points can only be timed by rotating the entire distributor. The other set of points is mounted to a movable breaker plate in the distributor so it can rotate independently. All that said: modern fuel is not the same as fuel was back then. The factory timing specs are probably not optimized for our modern high octane, slow burning fuel. You’d probably be best off advancing the timing from the factory spec (probably significantly) to get the most efficient burn and reduce the likelihood of overheating the engine. Using the programmable “advance” on your OTC timing light, you could ensure that you are advancing all four sets of breaker points the same amount from the factory timing mark, in order to ensure synchronized firing. You can keep advancing a little at a time (likely having to re-adjust idle speed/mixture in between each adjustment, as advancing timing will increase idle speed) and then take it for a test drive each time to ensure it doesn’t “ping” or detonate while pulling a hill at full throttle. Once you advance it far enough that it pings, you’d then stop driving it, back the advance off a couple degrees and lock it in. This will be the most efficient setpoint for your particular grade of gasoline. The octane selectors were provided on those distributors so the user could adjust timing for the wider variation in fuel octane back in the day. Our fuels are consistent enough today that those should just as well be set at “0°” at the start of the timing procedure.
I buy non ethanol aviation gas, its a little expensive but its worth it.
Grrrrr why is everything cool , not so many years ago all fitters had a coach key in their tool box !
Thanks for the update. 👍👍👍👍👍
Hey glad you enjoyed the video!
I'm trying to find a old truck from my home town I think I have found it if they will sell it to me the new guys on the dept don't understand the love of old firemen and the truck trucks
Yes thats a common issue today but I think the new generation of young people are starting to discover working with their hands again and I think it will get better as time goes on. Hoepfully anyway!!
Awesome work John! Thankfully here in my part of Upstate New York we have Stewarts Gas Stations that have Non-Ethanol Premium. I always recommend it to my friends with Antique Apparatus and Vintage Vehicles, and I mix in Marvel Mystery Oil with it. Has never let me down. Even in my lawnmower sitting over the winter with fuel in it, in the spring, it fires right off. The Fire Company I used to be a member of has a 1931 Ahrens Fox R-60. It's a really nice piece, but today, the poor thing is on permanent static display because no one would listen to my suggestions, everything had to be a cost saving measure, everyone in the company aside from myself and one other person haven't the foggiest clue how that machine is supposed to run, and the current Chief saw it as a liability and a headache so there she sits. It kills me seeing it sitting there every time I pass the firehouse. No more parades, no more Musters, no more cruise ins or car shows. All due to the stubborness of people who refused to be educated. Wish I could get my hands on it as the owner and do with it as I see fit. It'd be driving AND pumping like new.
I truly enjoy watching your videos they need to be longer like 30 minutes and have 2 or 3 aweek
I totally agree man but everybody needs to know I run a full time business, I'm not a UA-camr so its tough to take time to do a lot of videos and stuff while I'm at work. I will try my best though and I hope you keep watching! Thanks.
Geez.. that had to cost a fortune
Happy Fathers Day to you too. Thank you!!
we have a 1935? seagrave pump truck in sanford maine, i have a video on my channel showing it, its mostly original and leaks everywhere haha. it belongs to my boss who is a retired fire fighter, not sure how serious he is about getting it restored but still runs and drives!
G,day from Sydney Australia. That was a really interesting and educational five part series. Excellent determination to overcome engineering obstacles with adaptive solutions. 🌏🇦🇺
I've had 4 ot these. 2 rotted out and junked, 3rd one wrecked by my wife. and one I've had since 77 rescued from a storage lot in Chicago, rebuilt engine and mostly sitting since and garaged, never finished, driven only a couple times.
I love the burtz, hope i can nab one up some day
F-3?
I didn't get to finish my comment. I have subscribed & liked your channel. Again I enjoy your postings.
Thank you for the video. I joined my Vol. Fire Drpt. in 1964. The company was formed in 1928. When I joined in 1964 the Company still had their very first new purchased 1945 Mack which I rode & fought fires with. I became the Fire Chief in 1983 and I sure wish that we had your knowledge & experience with old engine
Beautiful old piece 🚒
Can you do a valve cover gasket replacement video
Would like to hear the truck instead of music, but otherwise, nice job
To be honest with the wind blowing while driving and our non-professional camera system its hard to hear the engine running however next video we will try and get a better recording of it running and some more close ups.
Really glad you enjoyed our video! Thank you.
I was in a volunteer FD that had a 1939 American LaFrance series 500, a 1948 American LaFrance series 700 and a 1958 American LaFrance series 800 (it was the last 800 to roll off of the line and had many of the features of a 900). Man, I seriously miss those trucks. Thanks for the stroll down nostalgia lane.
If it doesn't pump it's just a big red pickup truck that gets poor gas mileage.
The truck pumps water just fine. Only disconnected the rear hose reel due to cost.
Nice bro
We had serious trouble unlocking these brakes. They had sat in water several years earlier and the shoes were rusted to the drums a bit. A small hammer and some gravity got it free.
i am with Greenville FD and can attest that they were very stuck! Watched the tow driver have to drag it all the way onto the flatbed. Great works guys. I cannot wait for it to return to us!
Just so everyone knows the fire pump does work just fine. All I was saying in the video was that it would be a good idea not to use it to keep it clean from rusty water.
Beautiful work guys. Keep it up
Thank you, it is hard work but well worth it!
But does the pump still work
Yes it does. Just not suggesting using it because it makes rusty water all over the truck. It’s really clean now.
Purchase, NY (not too far from Scarsdale) had one similar to this except the ground ladders were stored above the hose bed and cab. The ladders were covered with a unique two piece metal cover. The rear portion was bolted to the front part which was molded into the cab. I believe Purchase's truck was one of the first American LaFrance 500s to roll off the assembly line. 👍🏻
51 year came with an open drive rearend?
What's with the three minute repeat at the end? Frame for frame, a complete repeat
I have a 30 Sports coupe that I'm working on
Awesome!
Трудная, но благородная работа!❤
👍
Why the unnecessary music? I want to hear the engine.
From an oldtimer who spent his childhood every season changing his dad's 66 MackDM600 Triaxle dump tires with new the secret was gas poured around the bead, soap and water doesn't do 💩 even diesel or a mix of the two but mainly straight gasoline and a manix and long pry bar you're welcome
Hello I like your videos, very informative and knowledgeable. I have several questions for you and would be grateful if you answer me. Could you please tell me where I can find information about the American LaFrance 754 cubic inch V12 engine? It has four ignition distributors. Is this a good engine? Is it possible to find parts for this engine or perhaps you know someone who can rebuild such an engine? I would appreciate any help.
Great video! I am working on the exact truck and had a question. What is the grey box on the firewall on the driver side. It runs off engine vacuum and goes into the water pump. Would love to figure out what that is. Thank you.
Shine that old siren up
