When Luke attacks the Emperor with the saber, Vader blocks him not to protect the Emperor, but to protect Luke. Because at this point he didn´t want the same dark fate for his son.
And also for the fact The Emperor would IMMEDIATELY punish Luke by frying him with sith lightning or some other power, it would be a lose lose situation for luke.
In the original book series that continued after return of the Jedi. The Emperor has a powerful dark side force power to possess body’s to save him self from death. He a has a whole clone vault so he could technically live forever. Tho with clones he would age faster each time. What would have happened if Luke did strike down the emperor. He would have tried to possess Luke with his overwhelming power in the force. That Luke in this point wouldt be strong enough to block it. Or if that failed he just come back in a new younger clone body and recruit Luke as his apprentice since he would have been consumed by the dark side after that.
Side note the Empero if he wanted to kill Luke and Vader he could have done it at any point as his power in the force is God like overwhelming compared to most Sith before him. He is best described in one of the Books as the Dark side of the force given physical form. His only weakness is he likes to play with his prey and never takes anyone other than Yoda seriously. As he was the only one comparable in power just in the opposite side. In the books he is terrified of Yoda and wonders why he never try’s to go after him.

Darth Vader needed the suit to live (you will understand it more with the prequels), and without the suit only his rage and anger could keep him alive. When he came back to the light, with the suit circuits broken by dark force lightnings, there wasn´t chance to survive.

Yeah at the end they digitally removed Sebastian Shaw who played Anakin right at the end of this movie and inserted Haydan Christiansen the actor who plays him in the last 2 prequel movies. Apparently they did it without telling Haydan.
You should check out the cinematics for the Old Republic game, each one is like a mini movie and shows some of the crazier stuff in the Star Wars universe. The setting is like 25,000 years before Episode IV, so no chance you'll be spoiled on anything. I also highly recommend the Clone Wars animated show after you watch the prequels, it really expands the stuff in the movies and explores a lot of the deeper topics that couldn't fit in them. Loved the reaction, Star Wars is one of my all time favorite series ever.

The Emperor it´s not short at all. But Darth Vader, fully armored and with his boots and helmet on, he stood 2.03 m, or around 6'7" tall.
The emperor purposely designed Vaders suit to make him suffer as this makes him focus even more on the dark side of the force.
