happy halloween, everyone! i was hoping to get this video out sooner and do something special for the day but uh... *gestures to everything*
speaking of... if you're an adult and live in the US, and haven't already, please get out and vote asap. lots of people, including myself, have been very hurt by this administration and it needs to change, even if only a little bit. i don't even like biden that much but i voted for him, please consider doing the same. the alternative is four more years of *gestures to everything*
things won't instantly get better if he gets elected, it's barely a start. but it *is* a start. and change can't happen until we start working towards it. thanks for reading, and take it easy.
    UPDATE: phewph

I love the music from Half Life 2 .. Reminds me of 80's horror synth music in a lot of parts. Then when things pick up into full speed drum and bass with synthy guitar style leads at climactic battles make it all feel really cinematic. I play through these every couple of years and they still hold up.

I think the reason that the suit gets supercharged in the citadel is not cause the gravity gun, but rather the energy in the citadel. Cause when you think about it, the first suit charger in the citadel is just after you get that, and then in episode one it's before . So maybe the energy powers up your suit like it does the gravity gun

Feel like the new tagline, well Alex not standing I have no frame of reference for that one, but hopefully it's better.. but tagline for these episodes should be run think shoot live, but don't think too hard, or you'll end up trying to fight scripting that was meant to happen exactly the same way every single time and we will go back into it over the years and make sure that it goes exactly that way.. just try to think about the one way through the level and we will provide you with the tools to optimally do it and if you try to do it otherwise we'll make sure that it means absolutely nothing.. and provide you with less options in the future, there's one way through these tunnels there's one way through the nest there's one way through.. well I guess I wasn't supposed to get outside that house but it kind of breaks apart when you do, not that the ending doesn't happen exactly the way they wanted it to whether you're inside or outside the house LOL.. although they tried, I realized I wasn't supposed to be outside the house when I saw all the hunters like shuffling into a corner.. like I figured their AI had broken cuz they just stopped functioning, no turns out you were supposed to be inside the house shooting at them from the window, my bad my bad valve I apologize.. I was confused because it felt like a call of duty campaign.

My god, like her AI isn't bad, especially for freeform scripting.. but the hug to you factor, like I try not to get irritated at my AI friends.. I think the the bar is low, and I remember when it was a lot higher and it's just now coming back and this is definitely in the upper middle.. but anytime you need to clear grenade through a room, and then she just walks right into the room right as you open the door.. like if they could have tweaked the distance on that just a little bit that would have been great LOL I was trying to find an option to do that like you could for the followers, in the last one which I ended up tweaking to 10,000 as since the last time I played this valve has put a lot of effort into making sure that civilians die for either showpiece or or something, something they fixed a bit in the second and third iteration, but yeah.. all the ones that I used to be able to save in the scripted sequences good God some of the ways they came up with killing them and making sure they would stay dead including the cp's in the tunnel spawning one shot kills whereas previously you could just shoot the guy before he shoots The sibling civilian and then stopping from getting shop at the machine gun nest I finally gave up after they spawned a guy outside the tunnel on the other end and shot him...
But yeah like it's not bad but fuck me it's not like it could be better and it wouldn't be hard to be better, but it really does seem like valve does not like you planning ahead in their pseudo immersive Sim but not in any way immersive Sim set up.. which is ironic because the second time you go through is going to be the same as the first time you go through for the most part in terms of events happening.. so you know, it was almost like they had an option of well we could have dynamic situations or, we could browbeat the scripting into the player, so that they think that they have the edge but our script triggers are so tight, they're just going to realize that it's all pointless and they should just do what we want them to do LOL...
Also definitely more than a few times Alex get shot right in the head jumping into a pile, which in retrospect is kind of awesome and kind of funny.. but... I mean at least she didn't fail any triggers, but since you can't do that and there is no stealth playing that's I don't know it's it's interesting, it wasn't bad like she can fight I'll give her that.. but at the same time like.. I'm sorry the creepy valve room with the creepy spider poison head crabs that are doing their creepy chirping.. yeah I'm going to throw grenade in that, so.. don't don't just walk into the room please, I get that you can kill them all and all that shit and and we could kill them and it would be just as fine and dandy but we could also just throw a grenade in there, and that grenade wouldn't kill you if you would move away from the door..

Episode 1: Doesn’t really hold up. Just extra familiar looking levels with no real new mechanics besides having Alyx cover is with a sniper rifle and blocking antlion burrows with cars. It has a great gunship and strider boss fight that outdoes any gunship and strider boss fight though.

If you mod the combat to 2004 standards LOL 2005 if you want to be generous, 2002 if you want to be accurate.. the first episode and the original campaign hold up pretty well, that's a big asterisk but there's lots of options.. most of which were in some iteration in 2004 and 2005.. I'll be it at the release of the first episode (and one of the reasons I hadn't played it until a few days ago) these mods were dilapidated by the pipeline update, which would happen several times over the course of the life span.. especially after The Orange box... That being said, well Garry's mod is probably the hardest way to get the game running* but you'll have the most control over what you want as far as what you consider to be modern gameplay, as opposed to having to deal with someone's package all together for the main executables, even though there are many options in that regard.. Both come with advantages and disadvantages of course, but with Gmod you can craft your own experience from the ground up as that is the only way to do so, just don't download all on or subscribe all to somebody's month pack just never do that nobody's ever really made a full comprehensive thought out guide and everything has to be managed individually so it's really just best to start going through the workshop being like hey I want that or hey I want this...** So via your own method of updating the gameplay to the era that it was released in.. episode 1 holds up, episode 2 does not...
Episode 1 has really tight level design, makes use of its set pieces, which is it it's all set pieces basically, but I mean that's half-life for you.. for scripted level design, enhancing the gameplay to level of something like far cry or fear or basically any modern shooter of the time, actually holds up incredibly well.. once you get to episode 2 though, some narrative changes start making their head way through and that was kind of the one thing Half-Life 2 had going for itself on it on its own self that it could actually hold up as saying this is something that we did better or actually innovated in at the time. One of the things that I love about the plot and setting progression of that game is how it manages to be a deadly serious game that still manages to be fun and doesn't really have an ounce or maybe just at the cracks of how utterly well thought out it's dystopian setting is.. it really is unique in that regard. Episode 2, breaks with this tradition and not only coherently doesn't flow together in terms of its world construction, but is constantly filled with just the opposite in the tone that it set with the first two and for the first time as far as I can recall though it's also the first time I played a valve game in 15 years as Half-Life 2 was the last time I played a valve game, bad dialogue just genuinely bad dialogue..
Something about the compression of voice actors in the first game was absolutely brilliant the way that they managed to avoid getting into the trap of showing off how limited the cast was and house elaborating on things was going to make things worse.. given the setting and the gravity of the setting, episode 2 drops us off of into I'm not even sure,.. it's not narrative that fails but it kind of is.. and the grand scheme of things it's a lot of nothing, and it doesn't tell its story with its setting like Half-Life 2 did in that nothing and all the extra add-ons are either working their way to undo the world that they crafted..
Now without updating the gameplay you got nothing here like Half-Life 2 still works for it setting and episode one still kind of works in that regard although it's just a tragic slog of mediocrity with good set pieces and atmosphere if you don't update the gameplay.. episode 2 doesn't really work on any level.
** If you just looking to update the basic gameplay to 2004 standards LOL, the v manip suite with a TFA base, mmod swep (especially the project hl2 mmod reanimated swep port) is really all you need, and can be simply configured in the menu although if you're willing to unpack whichever weapon base you get you can disable the iron sight zoom by changing the iron sight fov to whatever your view Fov is or however you want to have it, which lets them be usable as aiming in Half-Life 2 style of gameplay.. but you can like even you don't even need any of that if you're just looking to upgrade from shit, to a situation where it looks like you're actually holding your weapon for the fuck sake lol...
That's about three or four different add-ons up there all together for the basics.. and as well check the damages on the customization menus for the weapons for TFA, if you start seeing a lot of things in the 30ish range.. just change the damage modifier for the player to about a third and that'll bring you back to Half-Life 2 levels of damage, as these are designed around multiplayer usually...
*a big key factor being only mounting the particular installment that you're playing rather than mounting them all, and for the episodes make sure that you mount the one that you're playing first and unmounting the original campaign then mounting the other episode that you're not playing last.. for episode 2 there's a episodic model fix that is good to have as well as this mounting order... And for the original campaign there's a animation transition fix, as the models tend to t-pose in between transitions and this seems to fix it pretty well.. all in all it's actually not much to go out of your way in that particular sense.. it just took me months to figure that out LOL.. like setting up each episode will take less than a minute, the key thing to understand is that each episode has models that are not merged.. and iterations of that model contain the animations for each episode so for instance the opening for episode 1 if you have the main campaign for hl2 mounted first before episode 1, or episode 2 mounted first, or using the model fix for episode 2... dog won't have any of the custom animations to pull you out of the rubble or launch the car or any of it basically.. and Alex won't have any specific animations to the episode.. it's an easy fix when you know what to do and why, which is why I'm listing it in detail here, cuz Garry's mod is the way to go overall given how many things you can add plug and play and adjust.. just keep in mind, this is just an order that you've mounted them not so much as any sort of list.. just the order that you check the box... I like to restart the game after unmounting everything and then Mount them in the correct order just to be sure, and then type in to the console once everything is mounted flush_locked and flush_scene (I think that's it, they should come up when you've typed in a certain amount so far.. it might be scene_flush) I'm pretty sure you don't have to do this, but I had a cashing option that I used that may have ended up requiring me to do it.. so I'm just throwing that out there as well if anybody's having trouble.
Beyond that, they actually work really well, obviously you can have mod issues and pretty much anything that replaces the original models can be very suspect as well as anything that adjusts the AI, so for a smooth playthrough I would avoid those things.. if you're willing to get down dirty and obviously go for it, but those are things that I know very specifically cause problems.. also, well you can run multi-thread and the 64-bit version, episode 2 breaks and episode 1 kind of breaks with the 64-bit version sadly, it has something to do with the physics and restoring save games, but I found that just keeping the same multi-threading options, and then using the 32-bit exe of the 64-bit beta branch.. was almost identical if not better performance for some reason, without having any of the major headaches of just running the straight 32-bit without any multithreading, which is just obviously going to be a thing in the modern age, 32-bit regular vanilla runs fine.. but depending on what you're doing and what mods you're using without any sort of multithreading options enabled it's going to heat up the limited resources that you have in that regard, which are already limited even in the 64-bit version so.. if you're having a lot of stutters look into setting up the multi-thread but keep it in 32 bit for the episodes sadly I can't believe I'm saying that cuz I'm such a 64-bit advocate oh well..
