I been listening to Peggy for a minute now and had no clue how much influence he had on vaporwave. My mind kinda got blown away.. Ty for this mini doc.
i think this is the first video ive seen which actually talks about his older devon hendryx stuff! and a special shoutout to you for actually leaving out gen y, and the reason that its deleted, he prolly doesnt want it up with saying he hates it. i really feel like most peggy fans dont really respect him deleting stuff and just keeping the old things out. He obviously has some resentment about his past, even going onto the point where you said that "devon hendryx is dead" cause he used to have in his bandcamp bio "This isn't a bandcamp page its a gravestone for a dead musician." and has rip 1989- now. so something bad prolly happened and the name was killed off or something like that idk for sure. so yea appreciate that a lot. He went on to say in an interview that he has a lot of respect for the devon hendryx name so that why the stuff is still up but hed never use it again.
He’s said in the past that he made _Ghost~Pop Tape_ during a period of deep depression, with the mindset that he would kill himself if the album didn’t blow up. The bandcamp bio + Peggy retiring the “Devon Hendryx” moniker appear to be symbolic of him having killed (a part of) himself.
Finally someone made a video about devon/jpeg and his earlier work he's such a unique and rare human with so much creativity in his head thanks you so much for this video, new sub!
If you hear the beat to songs like Hazard Duty Pay you can very easily hear the Vaporware inspiration. If it was instrumental only it would fit right in with a Vaporware or even borderline vapor trap song.
So glad to know of JPEGMAFIA and all the work he has put in, all of it is much appreciated. Ghost Pop might just be the greatest album I have ever heard
The mention of vaporware made me do some digging, it seems like there's a lot of early vaporware stuff that doesn't get much mention from 2009 like some of the tracks of eccojams from an earlier release called Memory Vague
bruh nobody knew about dreamcast summer songs till after peggy got popular so i wouldnt say he created the genre nor inspired any artists at the time plus people like 18 Carat Affair and James ferrao were making "vaporwave" years before dream cast summer songs got released
Since I Left You II is also the alternative version of DCSS. It’s just another project that apparently disappears from Bandcamp. The only difference is that the parts. are all spread out that each movement of a song is its own track.
I think you should have mentioned Zatar by MF DOOM that came in an instrumental special herbs album in 2006. It clearly sounds a lot like what vaporwave could have been and ahead of it’s time.
How was I watching this video fully for ten minutes thinking it was just a random video essay and suddenly I realize I know who you are and we know so many people in common LOL small fucking world man
this is so nice to know considering how racist the vaporwave space is , what a whammy that a black man did it first like rock and roll and other things , happy black history yall
he put "generation Y" in japanese in the description of all his videos on the joechillworld account and the album is on spotify but you cant play the music, only see the songs and cover
in my opinion jpegmafia is the most underrated artist of all time with his creativity and insane producing but hes also my favourite artist of all time
Japanese culture has some clear similarities to western culture that cant be ignored (anime was inspired by western animation, manga was inspired by western comics) (western media and japanese media inspire eachother a lot) (the trans rights situation is also similar)
My top 3 has moved around a little since then, but number 1 is The Glow Pt.2 by The Microphones, number 2 is Veteran, and number 3 is Some Rap Songs by Earl Sweatshirt
@@JacksonBurnsYT very respectable, great video btw man! I love Peggy and haven’t even heard half of the stuff mentioned in this vid, super interesting stuff
I have to say im really upset that u didn't talk the much about JOECHILLWORLD cause its my top 1 album all tume, and i think bbc is his top 2 and super undderated, it has some lows but the highs are incredable
Oh man i absolutely love 2nd amendment. It's also different in a way because it's got him sharing the mic throughout it with another mc i believe is named Freaky, and tried looking him up but never found anything else really about him, but they were a good team up. Might actually be my favorite jpeg album, as the instrumental side of it just seems to fit my ears a bit more, though it's a close call, he definitely puts out plenty of great and unique material
im ngl, dreamcast summer songs is 100% not vaporwave. seeing people have this discussion for a long time, while i understand where it comes from, a lot of elements that are integral to what makes vaporwave what it is are nowhere in sight with dcss. its definitely far more comparable to a genre like plunderphonics
Yeah it's really not that great. Peggy is one of, if not my favorite musician atm, but EP2 was a hard miss. HOWEVER, he is currently trying to get out of a shitty deal (whether it's just distribution or a full-blown 2-3 "album" record deal, I don't know, but he's made it clear he hates his current "label" situation), so that is probably the explanation for EP2's significant drop in quality from his other projects. He did say he'd most likely never make anything like EP2 again, also. So that supports my idea that EP2 is a throwaway. Lastly, the snippets he's been posting in the HTBAR's are all fire as hell and prove that he's not neutering his sound going forward. If Peggy sees this, I love you.
@@vicomtedevalmont1073 I’m late to this and he’s since put out LP which is much better but I still think EP2 holds up to this day I’ve been listening since it came out and I rly enjoy it
Hey, I just thought I'd clarify since you left two comments correcting me. You're absolutely right, DSS was released in 2012, but the official Bandcamp page says it was put out in 2009 (and the music itself was made from 2007-2009). As for not mentioning those other releases, I knew of their existence but chose not to talk about them on purpose. This video was more about the history of the music, and I felt like those albums, while very good, didn't warrant the time it would take to talk about each one. I just don't consider them as important as the releases I talked about.
jpegmafia is who inspired me to keep working on music even if i reach my 30s and feel like that dream may be unrealistic
