As someone who served, watching Charlie and Matt not heat up those meals is both painful and accurate. Sometimes we had the time other times we didnt. Side note the Chili Mac MRE is the best one hands down.

Maybe it's because they were heated up, and it was an exciting moment to sit down and eat a meal for a few minutes. But also, just grabbing something random from a stack, trading the contents, and opening them up like a goodie bag mystery box was one of my favorite memories. Even today, I wouldn't mind having those as a standard meal every now and then.

Idk if you’re eating them cold but they are supposed to come with heating bags you pour water into and it heats up the food via a chemical reaction. A lot of the stuff you tried would probably taste a lot better if it was warm. I never had an MRE I didn’t like and I’ve eaten just about all of them if not all of them multiple times.

The Beef is perfectly good Charlie, the only way those can go bad even after the long shelf life expiration date is if they're stored in atrocious conditions like excessive heat for a long period of time. If you freeze MRE's sealed up, they will last practically forever.
We ate our MRE's cold 90% of the time, just didn't generally have the luxury of heating them up under the conditions lol. Pretty sure y'all got the abridged Civilian-consumer or Humanitarian versions, because they're not in the typical Military packaging and are missing several components, to include the Accessories Packs with the iconic MRE brown Spoon and other items.

For those who were never in the military or have had an MRE: Basically they are not supposed to be that tasty. Some of them are, but they still are no 5 star cuisine. They are just supposed to last a while and in a specific climate, while providing a ton of calories for a small volume of food. They actually have cold weather MREs which are much better than the regular ones. Most of them have a specific ingredient that constipates you (like in the cheese spread), so you don’t have to take a dump in a fire fight or on a training exercise and those have a little piece of laxative in them in the form of gum or something else, nothing crazy, you won’t be crapping for hours. Because when you are eating MREs you are usually also expected to need to do a lot of physically demanding things like digging a fox hole, walking a few miles with a heavy ruck sack, moving ammunition, filling sandbags, etc the MREs need to provide a balance of carbs, protein, fats, and micronutrients and that’s all, taste is secondary if considered at all.
Edit: the gum is actually a substitute for brushing your teeth, but there’s absolutely no reason to not brush your teeth unless you are just gross.

I always thought Beef Patty Jalapeno was the best one. It may be different now but back in my day it came with THREE desserts in it - usually some skittles or reeses pieces, a mysterious looking "cherry cobbler" that actually tasted decent, and a third that would be completely random. I thought it was the best because you could trade some of your extra desserts for something better if you didn't want them. Somebody else always wants those skittles.

    To make Key Lime Pie
    Ingredients:
    X1 Crackers (plain not vegetable)
    X1 Lemon Lime Drink Powder
    X3 Coffee Creamer Packets
    1/2 Cup ICE COLD Water
Smash up the crackers best you can until texture resembles bread crumbs. The smaller the better
Add all dry ingredients and mix.
Make sure to add small amounts ice cold water (it tastes best) at the end as you don’t want it watery and throughly mix at least 3 minutes or until it resembles the consistency of pumpkin pie if you mix it up. Add water if needed. If too much was added enjoy your soup.
You may also use Orange Powder as a substitute and make Orange Sherbert.

I have a whole bag of american MREs at home. We used to trade with the Marines when they did field exercises in my country. They were happy to try something different than the same old MREs they had. Not that Norway's Arctic field rations are better in any way...

When I was in there was a green bag you put a little water in and it lets you "boil" "steam" the food warm enough to eat. Usually put both the green heating bag in another bag, with the closed food pack inside the cardboard box it comes in, wait a few minutes and warm food. A lot of them are pretty good.
