- American Reacts to The Two Ronnies Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town pt 1
I react to the television serial from the Two Ronnies that was originally on BBC as a serial, The Phantom Blower of Old London Town. Originally shown in 1976 the serial was co-written by Gerald Wiley, the pseudonym for Ronnie Barker. he story was originally conceived as a TV special for Peter Sellers, Harry Seacombe, and Spike Milligan, to be produced by Peter Eton, their old Goon Show producer. Plans for the project were cancelled due to Peter Sellers' Hollywood commitments. The Phantom finally saw the light of day in an episode of Six Dates with Barker, broadcast on 15 January 1971, with Alan Curtis playing the role of the Phantom.

As a child my family and I would sit and watch the two Ronnies, the phantom raspberry blower was my favourite sketch series. We laughed so much it brings back many happy memories. Thanks for making me smile
This serial was written by Spike Milligan and a Gentleman. The Gentleman being none other than a certain Gerald Wiley with authentic raspberries blown by none other than Del Boy himself - David Jason.
It's a shame that due to copyright it's hard to come by full episodes. The format barely changed in 16 years. Each episode has spoof news items from the newsdesk, sketches with both of them, a weekly continuing serial ( a new story every series) a guest singer, a solo sketch from Ronnie B normally using his mastery of word play, an armchair monologue from Ronnie C that was a deliberately corny shaggy dog story that got it's humour from RC constantly going off from his story in distractingly wild tangents, an elaborate musical finale ( often with the two of them in drag ) and each show finishing back at the newsdesk.
It was a format that worked, and it worked for 16 years with it only stopping when Ronnie B decided to retire.
Pure Magic!!!
The additional joke being that Spike Milligan was no gentleman.
It was a series that was never missed , the hot pot of genius was incandescent .
You forgot the Musical Guest Star (one or two apperances), actually filmed separate and off set, - always seemed to be filmed at same time as a recording of Parkinson appearences, so never any interaction with their guest stars unlike Morecombe and Wise.
Of course you know that Gerald A Wylie was Ronnie Barkers' nom de plume!
@@highpath4776 I didn't forget, bif you refer back to my post I referred to them as a guest singer.
Barbara Dickson and Tina Charles spring to mind straight away. Though they did have groups as well and simarlarly Manhattan Transfer springs to mind straight away.
Its a parody on jack the ripper. I remember as a kid watching this with my dad eagerly awaiting the weekly edition of 'The Phantom Raspberry Blower' 😊
Spike Milligan and Ronnie Barker, two of the greatest comedy writers in history!
The Two Ronnie's so brilliant never a dull moment .the best comedy duo in UK .
One of my favourites this i wasn't alive when originally released but when I grew up I watched it and loved it
Starring Norma Stitz - gets me every time
Not many Americans enjoy our British comedy as much as The Eclectic Beard , so i have decided
to declare him an honourary British Subject 😊😊😊😊
Hi EB👍 the phantom raspberry blower idea was written by Ronnie Barker and Spike Milligan (another great comedian) the reason for the sketches was to ridicule the victorian police in not being able to solve and still unsolved Jack the Ripper murders which is why you see Spike in and out of shot, just farts instead of the murder, bloody funny if you know about the ripper murders of the time and the confusion surrounding it, not making fun out of victims more the police👍✌️🇬🇧✌️🇺🇸🍻🍻
You wall love the spike Milligan show QI.Great show man.
David Jason (Granville in Open All Hours) blows the raspberries.
Love your take on the two Ronnies 👍👍🇬🇧
IT'S A SEND -UP OF THE ''JACK THE RIPPER'' ERA.
This would make a great spoof sherlock Holmes film.
The way this spoofs the Victorian age Jack The Ripper reminds me of the spoof American detective show Police Squad. No offence Eclectic Beard but it would be good to see a Brit react to that American comedy series.
I request IRISH MIKE (FONEJACKER) it's prank calls on members of the public. The web addresses are absolutely hilarious mate. You'll piss yourself 😂😂
How fortunate we are. Not only to have had these two but also to have the ability to record them for endless reruns. They are still making people laugh even after death, now that is class.
Fabulous script from the genius that was Spike Milligan, with all Milligan twists thrown in, the progess to the following night, the swapping of actors and the cab backdrop, superb..
They always did a multipart serial in all their series, 5 minutes or so each week. There was the detective duo Piggy Malone & Charley Farley, there was a Pride and Prejudice based one and of course The Worm That Turned which was an alternative reality one where all the men wore the skirts and the women were the ones in charge of everything. Of those I remember.
The worm that turned.... i forgot that one! Thanks.
Ahh yes! The Worm That Turned..... wow... stirred a lot of memories of growing up laughing ❤

Oh god, I remember seeing this when I was a little kid - a rerun I would think! The next day, everyone was running around the playground pretending to be the phantom raspberry blower or the copper. Everyone used to watch the same thing back then, of course. So funny even today!
We did too, with salvos of raspberries being blown all over the school grounds. And even funnier and much to the bemusement of teachers and play time supervisors, we were all swishing about the place doing impressions of Dick Emery's character Maurice. One can only imagine a gaggle of seven and eight year olds swanning about saying "Ooh hallo Honkey Tonks, 'ow are you?!" 😁
Omg I'd forgotten about this, memories of watching it with my dad. It was serialised every week. Thank you E.Beard
Same here I remember getting a stitch through laughing.
My father just chuckled.
You cannot beat a storyline written by the late Spike Milligan CBE-KBE.
I know I cried from laughing
Me too. My dad used to cry with laughter
I remember this with my dad too ,I was 8. We had to wait a week till the next one it was agony
Norma Stitz in the opening credits was a nice touch :)
That got me giggling like a schoolboy when I saw it.
And Chopper, a play on words for Hammer?
@@MegaBadgeman Indeed.

A large doze of silliness is just what's needed at the moment. :-D
So true.. although, were this shown now I'm willing to bet some humour deficient people would be offended by goodness only knows what. Personally, I haven't laughed so much with some of the things shown on this channel. Well done that man.. Stay safe..

Just what we do best, really silly, really daft, laugh out loud, nutcase comedy - saw this with my dad all those years ago, brought back happy yet sad memories - RIP Little Ron, Big Ron and Spike Milligna (world famous spelling mistake 😉) they must be having such a laugh up there ⬆️
That's Mike Spilligan :-). As Kenny Everet introduced him.

Written by Spike Milligan one of the greatest comic minds and very very silly.
The phantom raspberry blower (noise maker) had a long career and is known for his acting skills. He did the voice for Dangermouse and was none other than Del Boy himself, David Jason.
You beat me too it. As I watched this I was sure nobody would actually know that.
Nobody knows who played the phantom raspberry blower.
I was sure that I'd read an article at the time of broadcast that the Raspberry Blower was played by Jeremy Bulloch (the original Boba Fett) but I've never been able to confirm that since and I don't trust a forty year old memory
This brings back memories, the TWO RONNIES also did a skit Charlie Farley & Piggie Malone, which is worth a watch.
This is what I call comedy, not the crap what's shown today.
Spike Milligan was a comic genius, no doubt, and I still love watching anything by Ronnie Barker.
Yeah... Raspberry Blower, Charlie & Piggie and 'The Worm That Turned' are the main serials they had running through the shows... great pieces of classic comedy indeed.
I recall that the femme fatale in the Charlie Farley and Piggy Malone drama was named Madame Cocotte.
This is just as hilarious now as it was when I first watched it back in the day.. Lol.
Barker's writing was pure genius! He was a master of the play on words. One of the finest comedians to have lived.
Ronnie Barker didn't write this, it was spike milligan of the goon show . Oh and a gentleman bit he wasn't Ronnie Barker !
We used to get into So Much trouble at school, they day after The Two Ronnies show.
Going around blowing raspberries at each other.
Wow, this takes me back to being a kid. I loved this series of skits from them, they were very special.
And still are lol. You just don’t get such random surreal daftness like this anymore.

Everyone has to be cool and love everyone who agrees with the group, but only those that agree with the group, comedy is a problem, it opens the mind. The perpetually offended don't think it's cool and if they don't, the middle class have to follow suit, otherwise they will have a bad time one way or the other. They have to think as a group, that's why facts are alien to them, it messes with their agenda, they don't really have, it's as if they can't believe they've gotten this far and are stuck. The people, are right in the middle because they don't want any "ist" problems, "ist" problems want to ruin your entire life, it's like 90% of people have turned in to ants and just follow the stupidest of us so as to keep thier new Audi.

I remember this! We all ran around school jumping out at people and blowing raspberries! 🤣😂
Just realised a young Vicky Michelle from Allo Allo as the newspaper boy
"Raspberry" as a name for a farting noise comes from Cockney rhyming slang: "raspberry tart" = "fart"
Good old “Norma Stitz” - quite risqué for the time!

I was a young lad of the tender age of eight when this was aired... Although we tuned in (as a family) each week, I must admit this serial absolutely terrified me and gave me nightmares. Nevertheless I loved it
I was a kid at school when these first aired, all the kids in school were terrorising the teachers with random raspberry attacks (which were mostly received in good humour). Good times 😂
They don’t make comedies like this anymore, the comedians these days are not funny and too pc and woke
OMG! Classic two Ronnies! Wouldn’t get away with it today with all the snowflakes. The end of comedy😢 Used to watch this with my grandma and grandad when I was a kid. Miss my grandad 😢
What is even more perfect is that the door to Number 10 doesn't have a keyhole on the outside, ergo it can only be opened from the inside.
I remember watching these sketches when I was a kid at my grandparents house, I laughed then and I still laugh now.
If you're going to watch these longer video's and break them up for UA-cam please do 'Karls complete diary' from the Ricky Gervais show next, it's hilarious.
lol I was about to say much the same thing. Saturday nights at the grandparents so my parents could go out drinking.
Spike Milligan was the major writer for 'The Goon Show' a variety-style comedy radio series with a story like this, musical interludes and usually some familiar characters.
Some Goon Shows had names like 'The Dreaded Batter-pudding hurler of Bexhill-on-Sea', or 'The Scarlet Capsule' which was itself a spoof of a Quatermass SF serial called 'Quatermass and the Pit'.
I dont think you got the 'Norma Stitz' joke in the opening credits...did ya?
I wish you had carried on with this reaction. It definitely deserves parts 2 onwards. The two Ronnie's always deliver the sauce and laughs, lol.
It's scary to think that my late Grandfather worked on shows like this, The Sweeny, The Professionals and alot of the LWT, Elstree and Pinewood produced programming/films.
I wish he were still here. He could of talked for hours about it all.
Based on jack the ripper. At the time, blowing a respberry was considered rude and shocking!. Spike milligan was a genius comedy writer!!
Written by the great Spike Milligan doyen of British comedy whose Q series was the basis for Monty Python . Check him out on Grovelling Bast..d when he received a comedy award from Jonathan Ross read who out a letter from Prince Charles. absolute mayhem. He famously was the writer for the Goons with Peter Sellars Harry Secombe and Michael Bentine on BBC radio in the fifties,
Spike Milligan was originally a member of the Goons and was an iconic British comedian. He wrote this and I'm pretty certain it's him playing the tall man in the hansom cab.
You should check The Goons
What can you say about The Two Ronnies apart from they were masters of they’re art form, while working together and on they’re individual projects. The original Open All Hours is definitely worth doing a reaction to 💯. Peace 🏴👊🏻
The Two Ronnies plus the wonderfully Surreal world of Spike Milligan. In my school days, when this was broadcast, raspberries abounded in the playground. No-one was safe!

My favourite sketch of the two ronnies was 'the worm that turned' absolutely hilarious!
You should check out Father Ted.
Did you miss the joke on the title card at the beginning?
"Norma Stits" - like "Mike Hunt"
In the late 1970s we used to walk around our school in New Zealand pretending to be the Phantom.
I sure hope EBR doesn't do a react to The Worm That Turned. He'll think it's an episode of Tomorrow's World.
Classic Spike Miligan silliness, performed brilliantly by 2 greats. Spike Milligan was a legend. A master of twisted logic, word play and pure silliness. Even if you wasn't told it was written by him, if you knew his work, it would have become obvious very quickly. No-one did silly like Spike. The Phantom Raspberry Blower is a perfect example of his work and was performed brilliantly by two of the UK's greatest comedy geniuses. :)
Spike Milligan wrote and appeared in the wacky radio comedy 'The Goon Show' in the 50s and 60s along with Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe. This was a great influence on the 'Monty Python's Flying Circus' team in the 70s, and many other later comedians. Spike Milligan had his own comedy TV series ('Q') for many years. He was also a poet, a musician and a writer. Milligan's six part WW2 memoir 'trilogy'(!) is perhaps one of the best of its kind ever written.

This was originally shown in segments during their weekly episodes of one series. I didn't know it was as early as 1976, though. I remember distinctly watching it, 'live', back in the day.
There's a lot of Spike Milligan in this, you should watch some of his stuff if you think this is random.
Spike was originally one of The Goons along with Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and Michael Bentine. Peter Sellers, obviously, went on to have a great film career, Michael Bentine went into comedic children's programmes and Harry Secombe became a regular on UK TV screens, either singing or in religious shows. Spike Milligan had some great series, the Monty Python guys said The Goon Show was among their main influences, especially Spike.
He's actually in Life of Brian because he just happened to be in the country when they were filming, he buggered off before they could use him more though.

Spike Milligan was one of the Goons and their radio show in the 1950's was totally different to any of the conventional comedy series of that era.
