All these years later and its still funny. It was old school cosy tv even back in the 70s. The Two Ronnies were incredibly popular. We all loved them. Watching them again over the last few years, its amazing that as a child most of the sexual inuendo and truly naughty stuff went right over our heads. Simply as we were kids and did not get it. As pointed out this used to be on as family entertainment prime time Saturday nights. It was all brilliant, utterly innocent fun as well. The Phantom and its creepy atmosphere was creepy in a comic way, the same way a funhouse or haunted house at a fair ground was. You know its fake, it looks plastic, it makes you laugh, but it still manages to be a bit scary. I miss the two Ronnies. It was a golden age of tv, so many classics came out of the 70s and 80s compared to these days...
Great analysis. I remember rolling round on the floor laughing at this as a kid, and blowing regular melodramatic playground raspberries as a result. Even then I was aware it had that particular Hammer/Carry On Screaming feel. But you've really illuminated how clever it was with all those other references and, above all, the Milliganesque humour really seems a lot more evident now.
Really well put together and very entertaining, both the original and your video. I thought the bit where blood seeped from the skewered coffin only to reveal that it was full of raspberries was an exceptionally clever moment.
The Mr Soft advert was the first advert I can remember. Years later , when i was studying advertising, I mentioned it in a class. Turns out my lecturer worked on that ad. I was surprised to learn that they weren’t under the influence of anything when they created it.
Now this brings back some memories. One of my favourite shows as a kid in the 70’s was the two ronnies and the phantom raspberry blower was a highlight.
As much as I love 'Blower', it is the worm that turned which sticks in my mind more, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with my age at the time, the uniforms the female police wear and Diana Dors. Not at all. /contains 100% lies - it was the uniforms and Diana Dors.
We need John Hoare at Dirty Feed to do a deep investigative dive on who the actual raspberry blower was. I’m sure Ronnie B used to say it was Jason as well. But as you point out, considering his recent form, I’m on Team Spike for the moment.
I am curious if one of the influences was the 1973 Jack the Ripper miniseries that the BBC did, with Barlow and Watt of Z Cars hosting. That was the one that started the whole 'William Gull/Masons' bullstuff, and was then adapted as Murder by Decree with Holmes and Watson instead of Stratford Johns and Frank Windsor.
Coppers in High Heels teetering down the Rd. To stop Gayers getting Raped or whatnot.... The Worm That Turned used to make me feel a bit funny in the Sexy leather SS uniforms ...70s were absolutely mental
Yep I loved watching the series in the 80s re-run but the reveal of his face scared the crap out of me as a 8 year old. I was fine with the coffin though.
I used to think the same thing! I am just astonished and pleased some other people thought the same. The waves in it make it look like a Mr Whippy cone of ice cream....
So well put together when it has no need to be. Two Ronnies was good too :-) It is always disappointing to go back and see problematic content in stuff you loved as a child though.

That Smith and Jones sketch is a good one.
That Rillington Place moment was pretty macabre.
"Two lumps and a sponge finger" got me

Probably the only thing David Jason didn't claim to be involved in was the times the glider club met at his house😉
I lost count how many times I laughed just watching this. Still funny.
That Christie fact is a grotesque collector's item.

Sping heeled jack, legend, great work again.🎉

This was the basic M.O of my old school ...dropping long 'Razzers' every 2 mins ...
OLD SCHOOL WU BANGER CLASSIC
15:00 - F*CKING HELL.

"There's no address on this card"
"I didn't write it when I was at home"
I wonder if The Worm That Turned was a warning of how good ideas could be corrupted.

I also felt a chill as a young boy in their whodunnit with miss marple and hercule poirot. Worm that turned was hilarious
I too thought that was the funniest thing ever Stuart. It's still very good tbf
Excellent video as always, Stuart! Ready to watch as many on this topic as you've got. That John Christie / manhole trivia is...shudder.
This scared me as a kid 😂

Scared me silly!
At 17:26. It's was Evans's wife found in the manhole
Ronnie Barker's Mum used to live in the same village I did. Lode, Cambs.
No way
12:47 All this AND breast expansion too? This story has EVERYTHING!
Ice cream hair 😂

Loved it when I was kid, it is all a bit shit now - great video as always
Ere I want a word with you.
i'm only 2 minutes in and 'cobblers to the queen' is quite subversive for the ronnies
Possible inspiration for Zucker & Abrams' "Police Squad!"?
My memory might be orff, but wasn't this a Goon Show episode story 1st?
The Goons did "The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexhill-on-Sea."
Bon mots 😁
Spike Milligan was a genius
I never liked their serial series
When comedy was real not the social political crap of today. Always a bloody victim.
