I'm told that 48 years ago, as a drunken father of a bride, I gave a brilliantly funny speech at her wedding. I do not remember a word. I did not even remember a word the following day. To this day my daughter remarks upon it.
For such a genial, unassuming - even shy - man, there was obviously something deep inside him that he could bring out through his work. And it was invariably spectacular. But there are a lot of actors like that. They are able to create a persona that covers the fact that their own probably wouldn't merit any greater attention than anyone else in real life. Actually, he's from quite close to me here.
At my wedding my Father-in-law said "I am not so much losing a daughter as gaining a spare bedroom" which got a huge laugh. At a friends wedding the best man said to the groom "A useful phrase to learn is "Yes Dear" which can be used anytime". That also got a huge laugh.
can i just say the 2 ronnies are comedy genius, i would like to say u guys really brighten up my day whenever i get down in the dumps i enjoy your content and your wife's laugh is so contagious, so please keep doing what u do i really appreciate u both thank u both for bringing laughter back into my life
X’lnt. Thank you Mike & Jess. A brilliant ‘drunk speech’ (roast) is the magnificent Foster Brooks roasting Don Rickles on the Dean Martin Roasts. Honestly, lol stuff. All the very best to you & yours.
You probably won't be aware that Ronnie B as well as being a superb comic actor also wrote a huge number of 2 Ronnie's sketches. For a long time he sent in scripts anonymously under the name of Gérald Whiley and non of the rest of the cast or production team knew that it was him. He did this as he didn't want to be shown any special favours as a writer. Eventually after every top class writer had denied that they were Gerald Whiley, Ronnie came clean and confessed he was was Gerald. Somewhere on the net there will be a TV interview where he tells the story about how he confesses, as with everything he did it is hilarious. Keep up your good work Thanks from the UK Fat Salsa Steve
Great reaction guys. The Two Ronnies, for sure a part of British folklore. There is actually another similar comedy sketch based on a drunken wedding speech performed by the queen of British comedy in 'Catherine Tate' called "Drunk Bride" (10.03 mins) and is the pinnacle in this type of comedy and so funny. Catherine Tate is for sure a new comedy rabbit hole you guys should explore and she is mainly known for her sublime comedy sketch series called " The Catherine Tate Show" which run on the BBC throughout the mid-noughties and nominated for an international Emmy award and several BAFTAS. Catherine Tate is famous for the various characters she played on the show including 'Lauren Cooper' an intelligent/dysfunctional school teen and her famous catch phrase (look at my face, am I bothered), 'Posh Mum' an upper-class family terrified of everything lower-class and many others with her most well known character being 'Nan' a wild old cockney grandmother with a vengeance against everyone! Here are a few of my favourite Catherine Tate comedy sketches, "Lauren Cooper and David Tennant | Comic Relief" (5.52mins), "Catherine Tate - Posh People" (8.21 mins) and "Catherine Tate Show Nan eating disorder & windows cleaning" (9.34 mins) 😅🤣😂
I am reminded of my cousin's wedding in the summer of '82 (caught on a wedding video), when the groom started his speech and was so nervous he stopped between every statement to take a drink. Eventually draining the glass. It ended in histrionics, with my uncle at the top table crying and banging the table-top with laughter.
Did you know that in the UK it is illegal to trespass... ok Unless... you are climbing a tree, to point at a fish 😮😂😂 I love my weird land ❤ from Northeast England ❤️
You should try "Brendan Grace father of the bride", he even manages to put his drink in his pocket while he lights a cigarette, Frank Sinatra hired him after seeing this part of his show, very funny man.
I'm so glad you all picked up so many of the speech's references across not just cultures, but also generations. Two that really stand out are the fact that, while a bride's perceived "purity" may not have had the stigma attached to it as it had previously, it was still a subject ripe for comedy, as we see here. Another big one that I found interesting was that, at the very end, he references "confinement". This was the practice of literally confining a pregnant woman until she gave birth, as doctors thought that excessive movement by the mother would somehow harm the developing foetus. Indeed, this entailed making sure the mother rarely even left her bed during that time, and she wasn't allowed visitation by the father, if I remember correctly. Not that most fathers would have wanted to visit their wives, the times being what they were lol. Kinda crazy to think about now lol.
Bob Mortimer told a story of when he did a speech as a best man on 8 out of 10 cats does countdown. He explains that the groom got the bride pregnant a few months before the wedding. "Everybody on the bride's side of the family got up and walked out of the restaurant. I only said "It's nice to see them together, the bride's legs that is.""
As others have mentioned, another great comedy sketch featuring wedding speeches is Rowan Atkinson's trio of the trendy vicar, embarrassing best man and drunk father of the bride.....The best 'drunk' comedian of all though has to be Foster Brooks.
Without a doubt Ronnie Barker was an amazing comic and comic actor and he may possibly never be equalled. He and Ronnie Corbett together as the Two Ronnies were an amazing duo. Their skits will be adored for generations to come, especially Four Candles, Crossword Puzzle, and their Mastermind sketch. And so many more. Having said that, I hope you don't mind me referring you to an other great comic, the late Brendan Grace from Ireland, who also had a hilarious wedding speech skit. You will find it here: ua-cam.com/video/6cNXtVt0GI4/v-deo.html&pp=ygUcYnJlbmRhbiBncmFjZSB3ZWRkaW5nIHNwZWVjaA%3D%3D
I've done 4 wedding speeches at one of them I said the name of my friends long time ex instead of his bride , went down like a lead balloon 😂 Colin UK 🇬🇧
For another classic "drunken father of the bride" wedding speech see Rowan Atkinson forty years ago - in his pre-Mr Bean days! ua-cam.com/video/-N1sjdLQIj8/v-deo.html
This was typical British comedy from the 1970s/80s that the American entertainment industry deliberately kept from the American public which the Internet has now freed.
Can I recommend two names if you don’t already know them. The first is Victoria Wood and the second is Barry Humphries - in the guise of his two alter egos, Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson. Top of their games!
I’ve just discovered your channel and have watched a number of your videos now, mostly comedy reactions. I see you also do music reactions but I don’t see any Ren videos so I would love to recommend you react to Ren. He is a phenomenal independent UK artist. I recommend you start with his track ‘Hi Ren’. I’m sure his many fans (The RENegades), will then flood your comments with other suggestions and his back story 🤞😍
We've actually reacted to Hi Ren and The Tale of Jenny and Screech. We were getting far too many hateful comments in the weeks following releasing them that we decided to delete them. It was early on in us reacting and we were not used to that kind of negative feedback.
Hi Mike and Jess. I saw you reaction to Sydnie Christmas. I thought you might to see MB14 from last years BGT.I doubt if you have seen anything like this before. "THAT is TALENT!" COOL and ORIGINAL Audition Wins the Golden Buzzer on Britain's Got Talent 2023!" Copy and paste between the "" marks to get the right video. i hope you do a reaction, love watching your shows absolutly brill.
He was a comedy genius. Writer actor and performer.
Impeccable timing and delivery yet in real life a quiet and unassuming man.what a talent!

The two Ronnie's was probably the best comedy show on TV in the UK in the 70s, ..along with another Ronny Barker comedy.. Porridge
Morcambe and Wise ran it close.
This could well be the best 'Reaction Video' channel on youtube! Great presenters and honest reactions - what more could you ask for!

Pissy drunk. The drunked sigh is hysterical

The Two Ronnies' Squash Match is a good one. The old, 'drunk' comic you may be thinking of could be Foster Brookes.
You should try "Brendan Grace father of the bride", he even manages to put his drink in his pocket while he lights a cigarette, Frank Sinatra hired him after seeing this part of his show, very funny man.

Im 71 and getting married in March2025. Thanks for the tips Ronnie.
Dudley Moore could play a drunk to perfection.
Rowan Atkinson,
His 'not just a pretty face,' live show
Father of the bride speech is brilliant 😄😄
Bob Mortimer told a story of when he did a speech as a best man on 8 out of 10 cats does countdown. He explains that the groom got the bride pregnant a few months before the wedding. "Everybody on the bride's side of the family got up and walked out of the restaurant. I only said "It's nice to see them together, the bride's legs that is.""
The groom in this is Christopher Timothy, James Herriot, in the original All creatures great and small tv series
With a horrible 70s haircut...thankfully in ACGAS he had a 1930s hairstyle which suited him much better!
Nice to see Mike being so modest 😂
Just discovered you, great reaction. Another comedian that made a great drunk, was Foster Brooks a favorite at roasts & variety shows.
Looking forward to seeing you two react to their sketch The Irish Pub 🤣
This was a fun reaction thanks.
As others have mentioned, another great comedy sketch featuring wedding speeches is Rowan Atkinson's trio of the trendy vicar, embarrassing best man and drunk father of the bride.....The best 'drunk' comedian of all though has to be Foster Brooks.

Sorry to tell you that they have writers to do that stuff.
If you find drunks funny watch Foster Brooks roasting Don Rickles - probably the cleverest and funniest thing I’ve seen
