My take is the Yamaha is the better speaker for most the tracks and across wider ranger of music. Mids instruments and female voices are far better on the HS8s. However the Rock and hip hop tracks are far better on the tannoy s. If you purely listen to that or want a party speaker go that way. This was a fun matchup!
So conclusion is the Tannoy is the better monitor. You don't want stuff to sound "good"on a studio monitor, you want it to show you the sound unadulterated as much as possible. The Yamaha's flatter all the sources too much, especially in the low mids
@@TheJohnsofDoes the only conclusion you can draw is that, "studio monitors" are very subjective at this price range. which of them are more accurate? the answer is none. If you have this budget, get a pair of Sennheiser's, if you need monitors. Speaker wise, yamaha sounds better, because I like them better, so it's more a matter of taste. if you mix something, you will be using a second reference always anyway. this tannoy's is full body and yamaha's are more open, is just a bunch of paid comments for the marketing
Digital Stereophony Thank You for good test :) ! Your recording beautifully shows the differences between the performance characteristics of these two different studio monitors.
You don't know what you are talking about, also the Tannoy Gold8 has an amp that can output 300w. You are never likely to drive them that hard, but in terms of sound it means that the drivers will be less compressed when amplified a fair bit
That being said, I am listening to these samples through my Yamaha HS8 and the master track sounds different to the recorded HS8 sample. In my room HS8 sounds deeper with same revealing quality as in the videos.
because the recorded hs8 sample will sound with an offset in an hs8, you'd need to record it in a measuring mic to make a kind of impulse response of it, if you listen to the response of the yamaha and the response of his room through your yamaha the response of both yamahas together will make it more dramatic, you need to listen to it in a different response, ideally flat headphones
This video helped me pick the Tannoy....I have a pair.Great speakers. Very acoustic and harmonic. All frequencies are linear and do not overlap each other. Bass is not aggressive. Balanced speakers, with a live-concert feeling type of sound. Also great at low volumes. Recommended.
I found the Tannoy to have deeper bass which is good, but Yamaha sound more balanced and open. The soundstage of Tannoy is narrower, it's like the sound is focused on my head.
After reading so many great reviews about the Tannoy Gold 8 speakers all over the internet, I decided to buy them. When I unboxed them, I had a 'Wow' moment! The build quality is impressive-massive and beautiful! They look like they cost four times the price. But then there's the sound... The midrange is very good, and the highs are just okay, though it feels like the frequencies drop off after 16 kHz. The bass, however, is almost non-existent, so weak! I couldn't hear anything below 50Hz. The worst part is the sound limiter. These speakers are advertised as having a 300-watt amplifier and should reach up to 110 dB, but I could only get a maximum of 85 dB before the red light came on. Five seconds later, the volume was automatically cut in half. It feels like the amplifier gets warm and fatigued quickly. In conclusion, I'll stick with my Yamaha HS8 speakers. The Tannoys are being returned to the store. I don't want to sound too harsh, but they feel like cheap speakers in a luxurious, heavy box. I can't recommend them, sorry.
Tannoy was an apocalypsis for me..... Much nearer to the source track... Yamaha's 3-4k freqs toned up and more streched stereo image.... For long period mixing times and secure results I think Tannoy is the "winner" P.S.: Always a subwoofer will be a perfect "helper" for right results (by mixing them with an "optimised" volume). Thanks for review ! Very helpful !
In general, sound quality of all tested 8 inch monitors are quite similar, and always out-performed the smaller 7"s or 5"s. So, to pick the "winner" is very difficult! For me, the top 3 is : Gold 8, Eris 8 XT & Hs8, what is your thought?
Gold 8 ....period. The coaxial design is super accurate in the image. Nothing beats that imo. But don't buy 8" if you don't need it. The 7 " version will sound better if the room is not that big.
I worked with HS7's for years and here's my honest take. They are brutal to listen to. If you suck at mixing (as I do lol) they will let you know it. However they translate extremely well. I have a love hate relationship with them. I loved that the mix sounded consistent across multiple sound sources. I hated that I could never get my mixes to sound as good as my reference tracks (mostly on me really). The issue I have with them is I would spend too much time tweaking things especially in the high end. But they will tell you if your mix is good or bad.
@@nvisionbeats I think my issue was more or less the reference tracks I'd work off of were all made o. Some pretty high end stuff In their mixing chains and monitoring. I always had the high trim on mine dialed back a little but I think it's like anything else. Once you hear a nice set of focals it's hard to go back and work on the Yamaha, or once you work on a pair of Yamaha it's hard to go back to something like a krk. But you might also be correct. Hi hats and cymbals were always the hardest part for me to get to sit where I want on the Yamaha. Not really a knock on them at all. I'd never advise against so.eone buying them, but they do have a sound of their own. And they do translate very very well for the price.
@@jakerain2820 Ok yeah that's interesting thanks for the reply, I suppose if you are referencing those type of tracks then it doesn't really matter because you would be aiming to get yours as bright, but without the reference and yeah with cymbals maybe even vocals it might be an issue but I checked the frequency responses on both of these and the Yamaha's don't look too crazy in the high end. I think it's just the Tannoys have that high bass/low mid boost that would take away from the highs slightly because when I use them they are still very clear and bright. I'm looking to upgrade my home set up from KRK rp5's - want a pretty flat sound but with a decent low end (so I don't have to get a sub). We have the Tannoys at the Studio I work in and i'm not a fan of the high bass / low mid boost colouring the bass but they give a good thump without a subwoofer.
@@nvisionbeats the Yamaha are a major upgrade from the krk and they are very flat. I didn't really need a sub with the 7's so I'd doubt you'd need one with the 8's. The 5's I would definitely recommend a sub though. The other thing with the Yamaha is they are rear ported so you'll want to keep them a good distance from a wall. You wouldn't be disappointed with the 7s or 8s. But they will definitely tell you if your mix is good or bad and anytime I moved I'd have to play with my desks location in the room until I could find the sweet spot well enough. They are good monitors for their price. You have to spend a whole lot more to really go up another level that would be noticeable.
HS8 more good at mid freq. But Tannoy is more clear. I don't know the price differences. HS8 put out high frq details of vocals more than original and Tannoy is low in this. But HS8 sound hasn't low freq like tannoy. If I can buy both this and place them together for mixing, I will die with music
Tannoy wins: Opening and tightening punchy sound. I am suprised that Tannoy can show the detai in strings and low tighten drum sound. Thanks for your comparation.
@@keithrichards4296 They sound too colored, 500-800 range. You can hear their box sound. Hs8 is more flat. That is good for proper mastering, but not for listening casually.
@@udahuda Come and teach me then. I've 3 Grammy's and my set of speakers is $20k, what I've conquered through my 20-year+ career (and obviously that's my fake profile). Obviously there are plenty of people doing marvelous things with low end speakers or even headphones (about 10 years ago I met a genius indian at Mix With The Masters who shocked everyone in the room with his stuff - and he used to use HS80 speakers) Today he no longer owns the HS's - but a much higher-end set of speakers. It's a natural moving when you go forward in your career, the pursuit. I'd NEVER achieve the level of 'refinement' I've reached nowadays in mixing if I regressed to a pair of HS8. Yamaha HS 8 > Tannoy Gold 8 The Yamaha HS 8 sound way cleaner and better separated through the whole frequency spectrum than the Tannoy Gold 8. The Yamaha HS 8 also seem to have a little better resolution of the sound quality with richer details/more information of the sound - so you might know a bit more, what 's going on in the mids, the lower mids and the bass section - where Tannoy Gold 8 studio monitors rather sound a bit muffled.
Obviously different ears , to me Tannoy sounds better in all means better depth better resolution the fact that they have concentric drivers gives them edge I own HS8 and they lack focus I love them and I'm used to them but it is what it is.
I would absolutely love to hear the difference between theNeumann KH120, Munro Egg 150 compared to the brand new Tannoy Gold 8! Those Tannoys look incredible.
HS8 . Tannoy sound muffled in comparison. Though HS8 highs are too harsh and tiring. Tannoy have amazing smooth, detailed sound and I love the deeper bass. I could listen to Tannoys for enjoying music but HS8 are better for revealing details.
HS8 have a brighter mid as did the NS10. I like both but probably edge the Tannoy. I'd be happy with either. For mixing classical instruments I'd go HS8 because they bring out the bad nuances of the instruments but for any other genre, Tannoy. Just.
From my personal opinion, I would said on Deep, Yamaha was very close to source sound track , bass was just right. In contrast, Tannoy was a bit more punchy .. Don’t be wrong, both are still great speakers .. just about your taste .. In other hand, Dream on Dream, Tannoy done very good in vocal .. i can hear it better than Yamaha .. once again, depends on your taste of music .. a pair of speaker cannot satisfy all your needs .. just represent your colours 😀
The Tannoys are and that is noted on the graph. I didn't find them lacking in intelligibility though. Just louder in the low mids which as I own a set of older Tannoy dual concentrics I appreciate as I found I tend to have to double check the low mid with my older ones a lot. I often want more and that is the wrong answer. Also I have always found with Yamaha's the upper mids are harsh and I tend to want to duck them a lot to compensate. Everyone has their own requirement they need to trick their brain.
Sounds like Yamaha has a very V shape calibration, like that of enb or pop music .Hi trebles and base with low mid range making it sound like a hi fi speaker
IMO that would force you to work on the mid range (which is where there meat of the music is) during mixing. Tannoy sounds interesting, without as much detail as the Yams. The Tannoy would make you think you mid range is perfect, only to discover a hole in the mid range when you play your mix on other playback systems.
How does this work? I don't understand this format! Microphone colors sound, video editing software alters sound with encoding, youtube alters sound with compression, soundcard does its magic, (amp alters sound), speakers on receiving end colour sound. Hmmm.
Hi DS. Love your channel which helped me choose my last r1855 speakers. Amazing for the size. Now Im between s3000pro, and these tannoy gold 8....I know they have different sound signatures but....which one would you pick (forget the features, just sound quality)? Thx so much , and keep up the good channel.
Tannoys are warmer, smoother. Yammis sounds sometimes harsh. But I see the Tannoys specifications and say: Frequency Range 54 - 20000 Hz? How could that be! That means they have almost no sub-bass???
@Moonwaterz I used the beyerdynamic iDX 200 iE and the frequency curve is pretty lineair and deep bass. And i agree with top comment. Yes the HS8 sounds a bit clinical, because you hear so much detail. (For human's it doesn't feel that enjoyable to listen to, but for mixing and monitoring its a delight)

Every track track ran thru the yamas sound awful like heavy handed in the upper mid and treble regions. Could it be that they were all mixed poorly or that the yams just suck? More probable for the latter. The Tannoys sound more like what the engineer intended to do for better or worst.
2 way speakers are useless for mixing music that has a lot of guitar. You should compare these Tannoys with 3 way monitors. Kali just released the IN-8 2nd Wave. I'd love to see a comparison with those 2

I feel the Yam sounds tinny compared to the Tannoy but the Tannoy seems to have this slight compression thing going on 🤔
compression from the amp/driver or does it reveal compressors 🤯
Digital Stereophony Thank You for good test :) ! Your recording beautifully shows the differences between the performance characteristics of these two different studio monitors.
Please test MACKIE MR 824 vs KRK- YAMAHA - PRESONUS - JBL. Always at 8 inches
Thank you
I use HiRes earphone...Yamaha more detail like it, adding HS8s subwoofer would be the best, Tannoy looks like compressed
Tannoy hands down for me though i wouldn't be unhappy with the Yamahas.
These pairs sound fantastic and I a little bit prefer Tannoy G8.
May I know the connection you used for this pair of Tannoy ?
This video helped me pick the Tannoy....I have a pair.Great speakers. Very acoustic and harmonic. All frequencies are linear and do not overlap each other. Bass is not aggressive. Balanced speakers, with a live-concert feeling type of sound. Also great at low volumes. Recommended.
I found the Tannoy to have deeper bass which is good, but Yamaha sound more balanced and open. The soundstage of Tannoy is narrower, it's like the sound is focused on my head.
After listening again on different headphones, I much prefer the Tannoy accuracy and musicality.
yeah same here, on headphones the Tannoys sound more even and less diffused in the top end.
Yes 100% true! But the sounding of a studio monitor is not supposed to be musical 😅
Yamaha more flat, less "roomy" than tanoy, I prefered Yamaha as it is 😊
Ehm what? A studio monitor is designed to sound 'honest'
I'm noticing in all of these videos where you compare tannoys that their mid frequency - hi mids response is killer
you are right, i'm just listening to BOTH of them now so i can really hear the difference. the hi-end on HS8 sounds agressive though
Tannoy was an apocalypsis for me.....
Much nearer to the source track...
Yamaha's 3-4k freqs toned up and more streched stereo image....
For long period mixing times and secure results I think Tannoy is the "winner"
P.S.: Always a subwoofer will be a perfect "helper" for right results (by mixing them with an "optimised" volume).
Were both speakers brand new when you did this comparison? No break in time?
I worked with HS7's for years and here's my honest take. They are brutal to listen to. If you suck at mixing (as I do lol) they will let you know it. However they translate extremely well. I have a love hate relationship with them. I loved that the mix sounded consistent across multiple sound sources. I hated that I could never get my mixes to sound as good as my reference tracks (mostly on me really). The issue I have with them is I would spend too much time tweaking things especially in the high end. But they will tell you if your mix is good or bad.
Because the Yamaha’s are very bright does that not mean that when you mix you try to reduce harshness too much and make your mixes dull?
Please make a comparison with the 6,5 woofers ... Alpha 65 , HS7 , Adam A7X etc
Hs8 has proven the legendary sound again ❤️
Legendary fake and harsh sound.
@@keithrichards4296 They sound too colored, 500-800 range. You can hear their box sound. Hs8 is more flat. That is good for proper mastering, but not for listening casually.
TheDudeGames most of people here don’t know what are the monitors for so their comments are useless
@@keithrichards4296 your ears are broken mate if you say that.
You cannot refine what you're not listening to. Would I make a mix with it? Definitely yes. The point is, if all you can have is a pair of HS, go and make music with it. But don't come and talk about it "has proven his legendary sound ❤️" (Secondly, this kind of test is pointless, you're listening through YOUR own transducer - being it a speaker or headphone, so you're judging based on YOUR transducer and its frequency response. How do you want your transducer to represent the frequencies, image, extension, dispersion, that another speaker is capable of?? There is no point at all.)
Listeing thru AKG 271mk2 id say the Tannoys sound more closer to the source in the low end.
same headphones here...totally agree
wider sound stage with the tannoys, but a smal lack of low mids too... it would be interesting to ear them after a calibration ( with sonarworks for exemple )
Today my Tannoy gold 8 and the SVS SB2000 came in, OMG what a combination.
Eargasme all day.
holy shid thats a combo
Do these pair well together for watching movies on a 4K uhd television? If it’s not to much to ask, what do you need as far as cord and wires for the best possible installation. How do you connect the subwoofer to the Tonney Gold 8
@@DvD21mIL this combo is extremely good for music and movies.
I connected it to the audio out from pc, to audio in svs sb2000, audio output from sub. to tannoy and set the crossover to 100.
@@DvD21mIL if you need pictures how connections are done by me, send your e-mail address and I will send pics, it’s a bit different as you may think because I used xlr for the speakers.
@@marvinhagen thanks but I’ll probably hook it up to the tv 📺 except I don’t know how that would be, since there are no hdmi cables and or arc output to input, can I still connect via digital optical cable, I’m not sure May need help with the installation!
Thank you for all your comparisons :)
Are Tannoy Gold 8 comparable with Airpulse A200 2.0?
I bet that after the Sonarworks calibration, after you make them as neutral as possible, you get more resolution down low with the Golds. Just a thought...
You deserve so many more views. I decided to buy ADAM T7V because I heard them on your channel. I have not regretted my decision and I have you to thank for it. Thank you!
Happy with them? I'm not sure to buy them or the Yamaha HS8.
Alfonso Arg adams doesnt hiss, awesome high notes. And paired with adam subs are very very fine.
@@alfonsoarg3541I’d go for Yamaha HS8. They have a slight edge for the low end. Just a/b’d them. Transients are spot on for both. But Yamahas translation is slightly better imo.
Yamaha HS 8 > Tannoy Gold 8
The Yamaha HS 8 sound way cleaner and better separated through the whole frequency spectrum than the Tannoy Gold 8.
Tannoy looks and sound great!
1:21 Someone is walking past the stereo on the right.
DEF loving the Tannoys here BUT will have to peep them in-store for a more thorough check.
HS8 . Tannoy sound muffled in comparison. Though HS8 highs are too harsh and tiring. Tannoy have amazing smooth, detailed sound and I love the deeper bass. I could listen to Tannoys for enjoying music but HS8 are better for revealing details.
I agree.
G8 is good for listening, HS8 is good for monitoring.
HS8 have a brighter mid as did the NS10. I like both but probably edge the Tannoy. I'd be happy with either. For mixing classical instruments I'd go HS8 because they bring out the bad nuances of the instruments but for any other genre, Tannoy. Just.
You sir, deserve more likes!
Doesn't really tell me much at all as the Tannoy speakers have more of a bump from 100 to 200 so they sound louder.
More midrange clarity in the Yamahas but the Tannoys seem a tad more open. :-)
Tanoy sounds compressed
What happened to Gold 8? Sold out or anyone knows what happend to them? Not on amazon or Thomann anymore, only Gold 5 and Gold 7?
Demand are higher now 😀, I have too and I must confess its a wow!
Lovely and so accurate.
Hi! You already somehow advised me s3000pro instead of tannoy gold 8. Can you make a comparison of these systems? Thanks for the work!
How does this work? I don't understand this format! Microphone colors sound, video editing software alters sound with encoding, youtube alters sound with compression, soundcard does its magic, (amp alters sound), speakers on receiving end colour sound. Hmmm.
the vocals on the last tune makes the choice easy. hs8
That means they have almost no sub-bass???
no small speaker has sub bass- thats what sub woofers are for
视频里Yamaha的3200hz附近比 tannoy亮许多 ,所以Yamaha听起来高音不够平坦
To me these are A and Z. The Tannoys really surprised me in a good way.
Phase response ? most importante thing for impulse response and stéréo field.
Listened to the gold 5 and yamaha 5" on this channel... tannoy sounded better. But with the 8"... I'm not sure
Thanks ! Great job! you're really help
please make a comparison: tannoy gold 5 vs yamaha hs7
Yamaha HS8 have much more mid frequency info.
Audio-Technica ATH-m40x
@Moonwaterz I used the beyerdynamic iDX 200 iE and the frequency curve is pretty lineair and deep bass. And i agree with top comment. Yes the HS8 sounds a bit clinical, because you hear so much detail. (For human's it doesn't feel that enjoyable to listen to, but for mixing and monitoring its a delight)
@@HermanWillems "Yes the HS8 sounds a bit clinical, because you hear so much detail." Two sides of the coin :) When recording a song on HD650 + dac matrix headphones the smallest details can be heard. Then I turn on the song on speakers or headphones for games and half of the sounds are missing, you need to mix again.
These tannoy characteristics sound similar to old, good Goodmans loudspeakers from the Axiom 300 series :)
Funny to watch this with Tannoy Reveal 802 speakers which are absolute monsters in terms of modern music production :D I think 802's destroying both Gold an HS8 in this category :D Greets
I'm actually deciding between the 802s and the gold 8: any suggestion?
@@simonecalderoni1218 Don't know man I think you have to hear it yourself and then decide. Great pro gear, it seems. One end of the power cable goes right inside the box -- so you can never misplace it when you move. Brilliant. Also, it says that the front is glossy. So professional looking, not like those cheap matte black faced monitors.
I have the reveal 6 2005 model for like 15yrs for my dj at home sets they never switced off once. Not even one day. I assume the gold8 would last very very long time also so now ill be doing a small dawless setup they gonna be the first on my priority. Yamahas feel cheap and plastic tannoy weight 2x more almost
Realmente complicado, el nivel está muy igualado.
En mi caso terminé comprando los Adam Audio T7v, debido a un buen deal que encontré. Estuve muy tentado por adquirir el Tannoy 8 o los HS8.

Both good speakers but i would have the tannoy, better balance.
Nice Videos!! Can you please make the KRK 5 G4 vs IK Multimedia Micro Monitors? Thanks!
fells like a tilt shift. the tannoys have less highs and more bass.
Si buscáis unos monitores de estudio yamaha de alta gama mirad los msp7
Every track track ran thru the yamas sound awful like heavy handed in the upper mid and treble regions. Could it be that they were all mixed poorly or that the yams just suck? More probable for the latter. The Tannoys sound more like what the engineer intended to do for better or worst.
They sound pretty similar, which is a good thing.
Yamaha sounds more transparent and way more revealing. Tannoys sound darker. Not bad by all means but for reference purpose, Yamaha has the edge here.
tannoy 😍😍😍
Yamaha it s for fine music, like bright classic black piano Yamaha... if u are understand...
2 way speakers are useless for mixing music that has a lot of guitar. You should compare these Tannoys with 3 way monitors. Kali just released the IN-8 2nd Wave. I'd love to see a comparison with those 2
