This reminds me of my year in Korea, 1973-1974. The EM and NCO clubs had visiting acts of Koreans that did covers of a lot of the current songs. Most were pretty good. Brings back good memories.

Oh my gosh; this is delightful! If Ronnie and the Ronettes are like watercolours with a dose of sugary syrup, the Barberettes are like CAD drawing - absolutely precise and finely detailed. Its a perfectly stripped-down rendition of what Spector’s wall of sound actually hid from us - nothing but the harmonies, the melody and the songwriting. Just sublime.
While in the Marines, my first overseas assignment was at MCAS Iwakuni Japan way back in 1973. The NCO Club had live music the night I went, so with a beer in hand I sat back and got prepared to be entertained. A short back story, I was born and raised in a primarily farming community in upper state Indiana. So my exposure to different cultures was rather limited. That no longer was the case, once I enlisted in the Marines in 1971. Back to the NCO Club. The band took the stage and I watched for the first time a Japanese female belt out "Stand by your man". It didn't stop there, she did a fantastic job with what ever sang. During the break, I went over to them to tell them that I thought they were really good. As with most of the locals that I interacted with, on and off duty, her English was not bad. I'm still impressed with how she sang with none of the normal difficulty we all have when we try to speak another language. Memories. Yours Aye
Simper Fi Marine. Always great hearing from another. After the Marines I got into L.E. then after 25 years I retired, but still worked PT with the Sheriff's Office here. Being PT you really do work at the pleasure of the Sheriff. Meaning whenever and where ever your needed. Good to go with me, I actually enjoyed it. Anyway, while pulling a night shift in the housing unit, I was talking to a guy who Ranger Regiment as a E-8. I was feeling sorry for myself, missing the military and all. So I asked him if he ever felt the same way. With out a moment hesitation, he look at me and said, "Everyday, like a lost lover". That pretty much summed it up for me as well. As well as beautifully phrased. Just wanted to pass that one On. Simper Fi. The edit is mainly because my spell check is a communist democrat and hates my guts.

When we heard it while playing cards in the barracks, we would say "I'll buy,you fly" meaning one guy could get off his ass, take our money and go buy the "Soup Soba" for the group and collectively he would have enough to pay for his. Then he could keep anything left over. Was the town outside the base still called "RTO"? There was a kind of a strip mall put there. My buddy and I rode our rented bicycles out there and parked them out side of a small store. Then walked to the the theater to watch a Bruce Lee movie (all in Japanese). When we came back and the bikes were still there. (We were surprised) We found out that some local kids tried to steal them b but the little old mommason who owned the store actually grabbed a broom and went after the kids. Needless to say we thanked her a lot and spent some money there. We even left some on the counter partly his under the register. (By mistake of course) Oh, and when I first got there, not knowing anything about the place, except the restricted bars and such. In a bar out in town, i bought a really good looking girl a drink and ending up with her getting every yen i had. Then thanking me and walking away. "Young dumb and full of c_m" I think is the expression that would apply. Good times, thanks. Yours Aye Simper Fi.

The band took the stage and I watched for the first time a Japanese female belt out "Stand by your man". It didn't stop there, she did a fantastic job with what ever sang.
During the break, I went over to them to tell them that I thought they were really good.
As with most of the locals that I interacted with, on and off duty, her English was not bad. I'm still impressed with how she sang with none of the normal difficulty we all have when we try to speak another language.

After the Marines I got into L.E. then after 25 years I retired, but still worked PT with the Sheriff's Office here. Being PT you really do work at the pleasure of the Sheriff. Meaning whenever and where ever your needed.
Good to go with me, I actually enjoyed it.
Anyway, while pulling a night shift in the housing unit, I was talking to a guy who Ranger Regiment as a E-8.
I was feeling sorry for myself, missing the military and all. So I asked him if he ever felt the same way. With out a moment hesitation, he look at me and said,
"Everyday, like a lost lover". That pretty much summed it up for me as well. As well as beautifully phrased.
Just wanted to pass that one On.

@Gregory Johnston Man I forgot about the snack truck. When we heard it while playing cards in the barracks, we would say "I'll buy,you fly" meaning one guy could get off his ass, take our money and go buy the "Soup Soba" for the group and collectively he would have enough to pay for his. Then he could keep anything left over.
Was the town outside the base still called "RTO"?
There was a kind of a strip mall put there.
My buddy and I rode our rented bicycles out there and parked them out side of a small store. Then walked to the the theater to watch a Bruce Lee movie (all in Japanese).
When we came back and the bikes were still there. (We were surprised)
We found out that some local kids tried to steal them b but the little old mommason who owned the store actually grabbed a broom and went after the kids.
Needless to say we thanked her a lot and spent some money there. We even left some on the counter partly his under the register. (By mistake of course)
Oh, and when I first got there, not knowing anything about the place, except the restricted bars and such.
In a bar out in town, i bought a really good looking girl a drink and ending up with her getting every yen i had. Then thanking me and walking away.
"Young dumb and full of c_m"
I think is the expression that would apply.
