Using the second hand in arming sword is key. Leaving it to hang by your side is not the perfect position. To quote Leckkuchner, it should be on the back, or if you want to use it - at the breast.
How flexible were longswords? I have a Balaur Arms 15th Century Italian Longsword and I’m still getting used to the flexibility. It’s 5160 spring steel.
