    Nick is The Man! Excellent match.

    Do left handed fencers kind of have an advantage? They're able to get used to fighting right handers, while right handers probably don't get that much practice at fighting left handers

      You've hit the nail on the head. In theory no, but it;s all down to individual experience. As only 1 in 10 is left handed, they typically have a lot of experience against right handers who typically have a lot less experience against the lefties. This does depend on your group of sparring partners though.

    What gloves are the two of you using here? I am doing sidesword with a small club, and I'm having trouble finding gloves that would work with the hilts.

      Both using red dragons here, though we also both own the sparring glove five finger model. Neither is particularly ideal tbh. Red Dragons have gotten a lot worse in recent years and the sparring gloves have some major issues. Sadly sidesword is the hardest one to find gloves for, as it needs a good amount of protection whilst working with the most complex (for a heavy glove) grip. One of the major challenges is the bulk around of the base of the thumb causing the hand to be pushed away from the quillon block which is hugely uncomortable. I suspect the new Thokk gloves will be the answer for this. I have had them on my hands but not sparred with them, we have a lot of pairs on the way to us now.

    Do you think you will ever upload sidesword lessons like you have done for sabre?
    Edit: do you have a manual on sidesword like you do for sabre? I think I'd be interested in learning it but things seem so inaccessible as I'm quite unfamiliar

      I don't think it's likely we will do video lessons for it anytime soon unfortunately. Michael is working on a written guide which will be free, but I (Nick) am not sure on the timeline for release. It can be hard to get into. I am a fan of Manciolino's treatise which you can buy a translation for on Amazon. Michael works from Meyer (rapier), of which there are several translations.

      @@AcademyofHistoricalFencing I saw that he was working on a book alright. That would be a fantastic resource and I definitely think people would be happy to pay towards it if it just isn't feasible for him to pump so much time into it for free.
      The style you use in this video has seriously sparked with me, is this Meyer or Manciolino?
      Thanks for the response, appreciate it. Not many hema clubs in ireland and those that are here dont really focus on sabre or sidesword so it's great to have this channel.
      The manciolino book, is that Complete Renaissance Swordsmanship (Opera Nova)?

      @@dylanduke9963 I don't believe this is Mancilino's work. My club studies him and 3 other Italian masters, Marozzo, Dall Agochie and Anonimo. Unless the interpretation of the material is radically different, this seemed bizarre and anachronistic using the side sword with a fencing style designed for other weapons. Nonetheless very entertaining.

      @@dylanduke9963 I'm not 100% sure, but from what I've seen in other videos, this looks like military saber. I have not studied any sword martial arts outside of the Bolognese tradition, not that I wouldn't want to. For that reason, I have a lot of trouble identifying what tradition is being used.

      Sideswords ars effectively the transition between arming swords and rapiers. Less hand protection and length than a rapier but more cutting power and arguably nimbleness on the parry

    • @AcademyofHistoricalFencing
      @AcademyofHistoricalFencing  3 роки тому +3

      Depends by what definitions you go. The term rapier was very broadly used historically to cover a very wide array of swords. For simplicity sake today we commonly use the term rapier for a longer and more (though not exclusively) thrust orientated sword. These are both shorter and broader blades that use a lot more cutting, the type and style is commonly called sidesword today. Because we are looking back at such a broad amount of history and styles these terms are useful to us to be able to easily distinquish between types and styles.

      No, this is a community space, part of a local village hall. But no even when training in public parks we never have, it's not impossible, but with common sense it's very unlikely.
