Good video !! I am about to do this on my Husqvarna. I really like your idea of modifying the washer to let the grease enter the thrust bearing. I'll be stealing your idea ! Thanks again !! You've got a new subscriber !!
Thank You, sir, a Perfect video, and O boy was the assemblies full of old grease. I used the good grease and it all worked fine. I am waiting for the thrust washers and the job is done.
Great Bruce, I laughed out loud when I saw that clapboard...Your videos keep getting better and now they're a full blown Hollywood production. I just love my dremel, I use it a lot in my woodworking as well. Stay warm my friend....we're hovering around 77-78 degrees down here in Central Florida
That was a neat job. The steering, if not easier, will be a lot better at any rate. Those Dremel Tools are some useful. I got one for a gift one time and thought, "Well that's cute, but I'll never use it." Well I certainly was surprised. It has saved my bacon more than once. Have a great week Bruce!!!

My D170 JD is getting its 3rd steering overhaul tomarrow. It’s always so hard to steer, I just ordered the thrust bearings like you used and will install when they come in the mail. What wears out the most is the sector gear and the steering shaft pinion gear. Saturday one of the drag link ball joints fell apart. I think your idea will be a bunch less we’re on the entire steering system.
If John Deere were smart they would build their units with the thrust bearings and proper clearance for the snap rings or, on the S240, E clips. There are two small bumps forged on the top of the tube beneath the washer. I had to grind them off to reinstall the E clip while not binding up the spindle.
I have yet to one on a JD mower yet like that I have worked on quite a few steering systems and the owners always say that it's fine like it is.......... Maybe later on down the road someone will want one done like that ... I think the first video I seen on this was Zippo Varga doing it ........... Plus Tard Non'c Bruce ~!~!
I use a heat gun on those blasted rubber/plastic hub caps to soften them to remove. Then when installing I let them sit for 5 minutes in boiling water. They get nice and soft so you can expand the opening with your fingers so they slide right over the washer. Then they will shrink back to normal size as they cool off.
Bruce, enjoyed both 'poor man' videos, thanks for the effort. I have an idea and a question for you and anyone else willing to chime in. The Dremel 'notches' are a great idea to allow grease into the roller bearings. What if I installed the top washer with slightly larger ID --or-- preferably slightly smaller OD?? Wouldn-t that allow the grease to flow to the roller bearings and eliminate the need for the notches. I intend on doing mine soon and welcome all responses/recommendations. Thanks again.
@@BrucesShop went with a SLIGHTLY larger ID washer, only used it for two hours so far. Can't tell exactly how much impact the thrust roller bearings have had on my steering because I also installed new spindles, link rods, and wheel bearings (replaced the bushings), but steering is now as smooth as a sharp knife threw soft butter :)
I used the other John Deere (180)with the blade today and I can steer it in the with with the palm of my hand. BUT before i did the job the tractor had been rolled and that may have made it tougher to steer. Other people say the 100 series tractors are hard to steer though.
Awesome job ya old fart (So TOTALLY Kidding my Friend!) It's funny how such a small modification improves the steering SO much on these old machines. Cheers!! Sean~

Really sucks to have to pull your ass off while trying to troubleshoot an engine that won't start. SO much frustration and exhaustion could have been avoided if all engines had that electric start option built in. The only time you should have to use the pull starter is AFTER the engine has already been running and you're out in the middle of the yard.
