Sorry this has happened to you. My money is on another traveller - someone who watches your vids, and from them knew what to look for and maybe even where you were. The fact they didnt take anything else also makes it look like another Vanlifer - creepy and opportunistic enough to take your battery but too guilty to take anything else. You should stagger your vid releases until after you've moved on? Invest in an alarm system, something motion sensory and noisy and linked/transmits video to your phone maybe? Dont let this turn you off your travelling/vlogs/dreams ... ! You are living our dream too ! Sending much love and care to you both ❤ Mick
Also get police involved. Chances they may not have wiped the battery down and have maybe left prints. May also be able to track back who purchased the battery they left behind via its serial number ...

I was camped in Mexico and another camper there had his boat stolen. The thieves drove the boat down the shore a few kms and beached the boat, and the only thing they took from it was the battery. The owner of the boat was happy to get his boat back.

We’re so grateful it wasn’t any worse and a replacement battery is on its way to us. But wow, that really rocked us!! 😅

Wow thats so strange and scary...I have been doing vanlife for 7yrs and never come across this thank God...but stay strong my heart goes out to you because I know the cost of them

So bizarre. Yep, we had something taken out of our car one time, and it wasn’t even the fact that they took the item, but the fact that they were in our car, uninvited, like you, I felt so violated.

This is the most bizarre theft I've ever heard. I totally agree with Kendall that it MUST be someone who watches your videos and knew where the battery was and the type, but even worse somehow roughly where you were. That's just awful and so so creepy. Is there any chance the Airbnb has security footage?? I'd be reporting to police for sure. And maybe invest in a little alarm system. I'm so glad I haven't had this happen to my van YET. I think it's because my set up doesn't look nearly as nice as yours 😅 Also, it super sucks and is shitty but might have to consider being really careful about posting your location... which is almost impossible running a travel vlog. In regards to WHY they replaced with a shit battery- my guess is they hoped it would run fine and you wouldn't even notice something was wrong until you were far away....so maybe they're local??? Such a Scooby doo mystery 🧐
So creepy hey!! We’re SO confused. So many unanswered questions. The Airbnb doesn’t have cameras for privacy reasons but we’re still so unsure how we didn’t wake up or hear anything with Nigel parked right outside our open window. Nigel’s doors aren’t necessarily the quietest 😂. Very strange but we’re so grateful they didn’t take anything else. I’m sure they were just incredibly desperate for a good battery!

That sucks guys. And absolutely bizzare. As one of the other commenters said, possibly another vanlifer, which makes some sense by the swapping out as neither battery are your day to day car battery, they’re pretty specific to purpose. Really sad if that is the case as I thought that we were a community brought together by a shared interest.
Stay strong guys, hopefully these events don’t rattle you and taint your travels for too long.

Have a look at going overland security video. His back door lock and bed security. The redarc have reverse protection. Have a look aussie arvo Lighting video and think pir relay siren. Next, the person that broke in has watched your video,s, they knew were to look and the age of your battery, also they wanted to try and destroy your system. The system will work. Most things have reverse protection to stop warranty claims.
My guess is they had a dud battery and swapped it with yours because they knew what you had from sharing your set up online.
They tried to connect it all to work for a small period as it may still get you by until a big few days of not driving so you wouldn't notice until you had left eaglehawk neck

Sorry for both your losses, fridge first, then worse the battery theft. Pretty sure they replaced old one so were hoping it worked and you did not notice till off Bruni to avoid police looking there. As it turns out I am travelling in old van in Tassie and after watching your Bruni vid last week also wanted to go. Got as close as Kettering and broken down here waiting for part from Melbourne to arrive next week. Two break downs in one week, but we will all go on and bounce back.

I already walked on ferry and spend full day walking and hitch hiked and loved what I saw. Were you able to get some charge in that battery, or no good. If you did, you may need to change setting/wiring for lead acid instead of lithium. I know with my refarc BCDC 25 I have different wires for various battery types, and wired in a toggle switch in case I swap one for the other.

If the battery came from Battery World it may have an identifying sticker on it, which may identify the original purchaser. I'm not too familiar with the Redarc system, but it should recalibrate to a new battery. As said, it is violating!
There are truly some complete numpties out there to do that sort of thing 😡🤬. Are you sure it happened at the BnB? I only ask because of what you said about losing all your power at the previous location after doing a shop? They would have had more time as well while you were off walking (was Leo still in Nigel?). The other thing is, is it worth getting the vehicle alarmed? So sorry for such a bizarre incident guys - hopefully, someone will come to your rescue (I-Tech World 🤔). Keep your chin up 👍
There really are arent there! Yes it was definitely while we were at the airbnb because our electrical system was working great until afterwards. The idiot wired up our whole system completely backwards (positive wires to negative terminal and vice versa) so it couldn't work at all once they had swapped it over. Thankfully we are somewhat back on track now and hopefully don't have any more thieves running around!

That is a really strange theft. My van has an alarm installed for peace of mind . Not a bad investment in the future seeing as Leo isn't taking the job of watchdog seriously.

That is sooooooo weird. You need to get an alarm system' just a cheapie of ebay, or better still there are small security camera's now available that will ring your mobile phone to notify when someone is breaking inn to your car and it will also record the the thief .. Take Care
Yes definitely! We’re thinking the camera could be a good option, that way we can also have a record of the act happening. Wish we had one for this, we’re so confused how/why someone would do this!

Shocked and sad to hear this guys. Its sound like a really sad attempt at a bad guy being nice! If it was a lithium battery, bad guys know what they’re worth. I had a few van break ins during my recent build and thats what they went for. Karma will for sure get them in the end. Cant believe it was anyone from your channel community though. Not good to let yourselves believe you’ve been targeted. Onwards and upwards💪💪
We're definitely hoping karma will get them and thankfully we've had a nice run of weather and travels since then so aren't trying to get too hung up on it!

I feel for you lovely people! You absolutely don't deserve this! It seems there is no limit to the moronic behavior of some individuals mascerading as human beings. Other than that, one does come across some beautiful people when traveling and I would consider myself blessed to encounter you sometime, somewhere along the way. Man I feel sorry for you guys and embarrassed as a Tasmanian that it happened here ☺ and yes, so many questions??. I'll also add my thoughts as others have said, are you sure the fridge is actually kapoot and it wasn't all down to this battery drama?
Thankfully this is an outlier of the Tasmanians we've met so we still love it here! haha. And yes it isn't related at the fridge stopped working 4-5 days before the battery debacle and the electrical system was still going great guns. Just unfortunate timing sadly

WOW not good ,, we got off the spirit our 6mth old fridge died, we ended up buying one from Jaycar as we saved 300 on postage, it occured to me watching your vid you sure the fridge died and it wasnt the battery then aswell , maybe it got ripped earlyer then you think, ,,, any ways Great vids ! hoping for some luck for you .🐾
Was also thinking that, but after fridge died other lights etc still worked untill the battery theft and reverse polarity cut everything out.
Sorry guys 😢 agreed that the worst part of theft is the feeling of violation. Hope you can get some money back via insurance or other means. It’ll get better soon.

So sorry that this has happened to you…
Without seeing the dodgy battery replacement you’ve received, you mentioned they’ve wired the battery in reverse. That would be a good reason for your redarc system to go into error state. Try swapping the the positive connections on to the positive terminals of the battery and the negative connection on to the negative terminals. Also before that, measure the volts across the bare battery terminals to establish its conditions.

That sucks, go to thrift store and get the biggest pair of shoes you can find and put them on the dash, if they have any brains 🧠 they won’t mess with a huge bloke. Love the trip, your surfing and positive vibes.
are you sure the battery swap wasn't done just before the fridge stopped ? so fridge didn't work because they wired the battery wrong ?
Yes we are sure. The way it was wired up was completely opposite meaning that nothing worked once they swapped them over. However when the fridge stopped working our whole system was still working perfectly. Over 13V, all appliances worked and everything was solid. Once it was swapped, there wasn't any power to anything
That battery will have a number on it for waranty purposes , it can be traced back to the buyer

Yeah it’s so weird! We’re careful not to post about a location until after we’ve left but if someone was there and saw us, they’d know where we are so it’s tricky!
@@KendallandGlenn You can't say for sure if it was a viewer or from other Social, or if it was just random. It would take someone pretty stealthy to do what they did and adding 30seconds to locate the battery isn't that much more. But so weird I mean they're not the best reviewed batteries nor the most expensive. Nigel makes a pretty convenient target though, probably only take half a coathanger and less than a minute to break in without extra security measures. Would the host have trail cameras or something?

If you don’t post your location until after you’ve left then it doesn’t track with a subscriber or viewer. Most van lifers have been robbed at some point. This thief clearly just wanted your lithium battery. It sucks cause they’re expensive. You feel violated. But you two are safe, that’s the silver lining.

We think it may have actually been another traveller even, perhaps they were in desperate need of a new/bigger battery for their set up but couldn’t afford one. Who knows! But we’re so glad it wasn’t any worse!

Personally, I feel there is no need to make excuses for people who do this kind of thing. They could have just bought a second hand battery till they save up for a better lithium one, or just make do. I am travelling on my own in old van with small budget and my fair share of break downs (currently broken down in Kettering was on my way to Bruni after getting inspired by your vid last week haha), but never dream of stealing or begging etc.
