honestly, i have read so many theories/ opinions on why he said "same rules apply" and this is actually the first one that makes complete sense to me. thank you
It's true he did all of those things but somehow you could tell there was decency left inside of him, buried under all the corruption and rottenness. That's the reason I still felt sorry for him throughout the film. Overall, I think the focus of this film is not just on a corrupt police officer who is struck by the lightning rod of karma but how society breeds degradation and immorality. The group of young thugs who beat the Korean student to death in the beginning... the teenage girl who was more than willing to give blow jobs and allow her body to be used as a sex toy.
I remember seeing this ending in theatres and being in a bad mood for the rest of the day. It really took something out of me, I really don't know what it was. Still, brilliant film. Brilliant ending.
Ya man. I just saw it and it left me feeling a bit sour, too. Same for almost all of Irvine Welsh's stories. They don't suck. It's just not really optimistic.
+incarnateTheGreat I think it shows that sometimes life really do suck, and there's never a light at the end of the tunnel. and if there was a light, you will find nothing there. I think it also represent depression and how there's no such thing as a happy ending. That everything in life is a test of strength and strategies, to survive everyday. But in Ivan's book. It shows the people that loses at the end.
I'll be honest, I LOVED this movie! I was surprised by how trippy it was and for some reason characters with no redeeming qualities are very interesting to me. I was impressed with how they didn't just make a nasty SOB without any reasons behind his behavior, they actually delved deep into his insanity and examined it very closely. Also, James McAvoy was PHENOMENAL!
3:24-3:26 Excellent acting by McAvoy. Just by looking at his eyes, we could feel his sorrow and his lament for the possibility of a better life if he wasn't such a big fuck-up. There's even a little tear in there. But alas, we also see sadness and his acceptance of how he is, and that he'll never change, and that him killing himself is his ultimate fate.

I have to say always been a massive McAvoy fan but this movie has given me an all new respect for the actor. I as well as many others could see themselves in his character our own selfishness, insecurities & for some quests for self destruction. His performance alone made this film so great & its a frigging crime that this film isn't held in higher regard
the sad thing about this scene that the story and the character and the actor made me believe that this is the right and only decision that will set him free. stunning, overwhealming and makes me sick that i agree with the character.

So, everyone will debate and ask the same question. Why Does Bruce kill himself. Bruce is scared of the world. He even admits it too himself. After he is reveled to be pretending to be his wife, his world becomes clearer. When his boss tells him he can't be inspector, his makes him feel like shit, he feels like everything he has done is his fault, because it is. Then, the person who he humiliated and made to look a creep, got his job. He also talks about "the games" and that "the same rules apply", these quotes finally come back and fuck him over. Bruce kills himself with the scarf the women gave him, who he likes. Literally the second he puts his foot on the top of the chair, she appears with her child at the door. It's too late, Bruce can't turn back.
Left me in tears. I really felt it. It’s insane how the film manages to dive so deep into your emotions yet remains so cynical and sarcastic. The ending is state-of-art.
I teared up a lot at the end of this film. The last half hour is just so fucking painful to watch. He’s severely struggling yet it is so hard to feel bad for a man who did so much awful stuff. This film is a masterwork. It is a film that truly divided opinions and shocked everyone. Beautiful, shocking and fucking painful film.
Its a good thing, despite the fact the character opened up and we saw his human side, the fact that he died shows us how his actions were wrong, thats what this scene is about, he realises his problems and he loses the games, also why he says the line 'Same Rules Apply'
He didn't tie the rope properly to hang yourself. Either this is intentional or it's there so people don't actually know how to create a rope strong enough to commit suicide with. You're supposed to create the noose by coiling the upper/lower parts around each other, so it wraps tight enough to snap your neck/suffocate you afterwards. A simple knot like he died would probably buckle under his bodyweight
A lot of people miss the whole point of the ending and the credits song. Bruce was Bipolar at least, his moods were up and down, the ending of this movie (along with the depressing, though brilliant song) symbolises his depressive times and the credits song symbolises his happy times. Simple magnificent
