Wesley (James McAvoy) reaches his limit in the office and tells off his boss Janice (Lorna Scott) and friend Barry (Chris Pratt).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Night Watch director Timur Bekmambetov helms his first English-language feature film with this big-screen adaptation of Mark Millar's action-packed graphic novel. Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is a cube-dwelling hypochondriac whose uneventful life has become a mundane blur of terminal boredom. Repeatedly humiliated by his boss and constantly cuckolded by his cheating girlfriend, weakling Wes seems to be living right down to everyone's expectations that he would never amount to anything in life. However, upon discovering that the father he never knew has been brutally murdered, the spineless, clock-punching pushover is recruited into a secret society of assassins known as the Fraternity. During the course of his training, the man who was once an office-bound wimp develops lightning-fast reflexes and superhuman dexterity courtesy of his skilled mentor Fox (Angelina Jolie). If those veins popping in his head were real and not effects, then hands-down James McAvoy is pure genius. Even shedding his Scottish accent sounded tough, especially when he told Janice to STFU!
Yes it is real.. He said it in an interview that they could just make with CGI but the director wanted him do it naturally and he was almost collapsed at the time.

I like the comments section of this scene. So many little details that add up to make it memorable. Nice catch on him trying "walk off" his anger before confronting her. I have this in my movie collection and it's still one of my favorites with Angelina Jolie.

I love how James McAvoy gets so mad that his accent reverts back to his regular accent when he screams "SHUT THE FOCK OP!".
He's kinda losing his accent now, nowadays he sounds more English than Scottish and his voice isn't that soft anymore, it's getting deeper and raspy. Constantly changing between Scottish English and American accents plus smoking will do that to you I guess, lol.

This rant scene was legendary from beginning to end. From the boosted confidence, the awkward reaction of his "friend" because of said confidence, his building rage when listening to his (former) boss, and even the smaller details, like how throwing the stapler hit the picture of his "friend" in the face, and ESPECIALLY how he hit him so hard, his keyboard (and one of his "friend's" teeth) spelled his thoughts out for the viewers to read.
That is what he gets for banging his girlfriend

@Ralph probably can't illicit the same emotional reaction, especially such a visceral emotion like pent up rage. You can strain your face to get red and tense with veins showing, but can you can do that while showing a slowly building anxiety induced panicked rage with your facial expressions, cus that's the true seller here. Unfortunate the movie wasn't better considering the acting talent and interesting premise.

1:33 McAvoy is so in character, he doesn't even look at the guy in front of him (anger clouds vision) and charges straight ahead....the extra had to improvise and step out of his way (This is legit, I read in an interview of the Director). The dude is such an underrated brilliant actor.
To be fair, after a powerful shout like that, I'd prefer to be out of arm's reach from the dude. Preferably quickly.

It boils down to the preferences of these snobby film elitists that get to vote. You can have a perfect acting in a movie, however if the movie doesn't fit the criteria of what is considered high art by these people you don't stand a chance. That's is the definition of rigged.
PS: also, it would be safe to bet that there's a lot a money going on behind the scenes of the voting process. Hollywood isn't exactly a place of people with high morals. Don't forget one of the most prominent figures there was Harvey Weinstein. Let that sink in.

I've watched this film probably 30-40 times and only now have I come to appreciate Lorna Scott's performance here when she's sat in front of Wesley. Obviously her lofty ticking-off isn't that spectacular, but the way she manages to convey a complex series of emotions just with simple facial expressions is hugely impressive: first shock, then indignation, then hope (that Wesley is being sincere when he says he understands), then discomfort as he brings up old memories, then embarrassment, then relief at being understood, then a sense of having her soul needlessly laid bare. She manages to tell her entire childhood history with just facial expressions in less than a minute.

I wouldn’t say he is underrated per say, but i would say he is over looked by awards. He hasn’t even been nominated for an Oscar. I believe James is a better actor than a few of the actors who have got one (this is my opinion so don’t attack me) but unfortunately doesn’t usually star in films that get noticed by awards. But that’s something i like about James, he picks work that he likes, not work he thinks will be more successful or make him more successful
