Nightwish - Jukka Nevalainen forced to take a break due to health issues

- How to begin telling something that you wouldn’t want to have to tell, although you know that the decision you made is the only (at least the only right) one you could make at the moment? I face this dilemma now, and will do my best to find the right words.
For a number of years, I have suffered from occasional but very difficult insomnia, something that has been my unwanted companion during many of our tours, too. I’ve done my best to try to control it or at least to cope with it. Still, we don’t even really know why we need sleep, so unfortunately there’s not much information available on why some of us suffer from sleeplessness. There is no 100% cure for the problem.
During the last month, it has become evident for me that due to my insomnia, I can’t fulfill my duties as a musician in the way that I’d want and with the precision that the music deserves. Thus I have decided to step aside from my duties as the drummer of Nightwish during the recording of the forthcoming album and the subsequent tour. I will still be involved in managing the day-to-day affairs of the band, but the dearest and the most important thing, playing, is, for the time being, not possible. Time will tell what the future holds.
On a personal level, my decision obviously feels indescribably sad. Fortunately, looking at it with some distance, it is “just” part of the constant, inevitable ebb and flow of life. The sad things are part of it as well as the beautiful, unforgettable experiences and adventures that I’ve already had the pleasure to experience in spades. Surely, there will still be many adventures ahead, too.
My good friend Kai Hahto will play drums on the forthcoming album. I’m extremely grateful that he didn’t hesitate for a minute when he decided to help us in this challenging situation. What comes to touring, everything is still open, but we will let you know as soon possible what the line-up will be.
If beginning this was hard, so is ending it. So maybe I will just quote something fitting.

Actually NIghtwish was the first metal band I really liked to listen to and Jukkas fantastic drum parts (especially on the older albums!) were probably the reason why I started drumming. Thank you, Jukka, for being a great inspiration and influence! I hope you will be back on your feet one day!

I know some time has passed, but I'm a new fan of Nightwish. I've seen your work through the Wacken 2013 videos, and you make such an impact that there are no words to describe it. I hope you are doing well, and I know that if any member of the band can truly help, it is Floor, since she has faced an illness that affected her career as well (burnout). I know that you will return when you feel you are ready, and also know that Kai has done an amazing job since your departure. My favorite performances have been 7 Days to the Wolves and Yours Is An Empty Hope.
As someone else who still suffers from insomnia, I know what you are dealing with, because of the ability to shut your mind down to be able to enter REM sleep. If I had one wish, completely unselfish, I would bear your burden of insomnia so you could sleep like a baby and still be able to play.
You are an amazing drummer, and inspire many people to follow their dreams, no matter the adversity they may face. Marco called you a "brother in arms," and I cannot help but echo that sentiment. You are truly a member of the Nightwish family, and from where I am in the United States, we never want family to suffer illness. But it happens -- however, you said it yourself: Miracles can, and do, happen. I sincerely hope that there is the miracle of you returning to where your heart lies: The seat of your kit, so that you may once again give the energy and rhthym of your heart and soul to all of us who most certainly love watching you perform.
Until the day you return, all of us in the Nightwish Family will be patient in waiting for your return, because as anyone who faces, or supports a loved one, knows: Nothing happens overnight. And I know you want to give your all performing and making music, but that you also want to enjoy doing so, and doing so healthily. May whatever faith you take solace in give you the courage to face and overcome that which plagues you, and we shall celebrate your return like no other when it happens.
Get well, Jukka. You are missed, and loved as a brother.

@@viniciusfranca2305 Right. To think that once I cried to this news, but little did I know! Karma is a bitch and Jukka had it coming since 2005, perhaps more than anyone else. I wouldn't have thought he could be as obnoxious as I later realized from various readings, the book, his interviews, his comments in several videos etc. The only one who still deserves some respect is Emppu.
@Kanashimi "People like me" are those who, as I made it clear, took a great deal of time and effort to go through virtually every available piece of evidence before making up their minds. A lot of things that looked a certain way at first, took a different shape when other information came into the picture. I cannot now engage into digesting it for everyone who asks, since it would be quite an endevour. And frankly, although I do remember the various pieces of information or details, I don't necessarily remember where I found them. Now, unlike "people like me", the internet is actually full of those who made up their minds only on the basis of one unfortunate letter full of twisted truths and strategically omitted details (eg. the "cancelled" Oslo concert that actually took place) . Such people are the ones who are perpetuating the "diva" mantra and that's so very common. I think that anyone who is really interested should do their own open-minded research, relying on different sources.
What a fantastic display of dignity, maturity and selflessness from Jukka and support from the others. I sincerely hope to see him back with the band in years to come, but I will continue to respect him regardless.
Does anyone felt a knot in your throat watching this video? I did. A legendary drummer needing to leave the sticks in order to go back to a healthier state is hard to deal with. The good thing is he knows Kai and passed the job to someone that already knows the music

One of the best drummers in rock. A former drummer myself, I kept wishing,when I watching Nightwish videos, is why the videos never showed much of him; his energy, presence and drumming is a great part of this band.
Such a hard decision to make, but better to take a break this way (& hopefully return) than to push past the point of no return & have to break forever. Best wishes in taming your demons & riding them back to where your heart is!!!!

Jukka by far is THE heartbeat to nightwish, the beat to which Marco lays down his powerful E string. Like Jukka, I too suffer from insomnia and my sleep schedule is so sporadic. But I never imagined this condition could be so seriout that it forces a professional drummer from a band. Whilst Kai is a great drummer, Jukka is a favorite of mine and I hope & pray he overcomes and returns to the band. The roster of Floor, Marco, Tuomas, Emppu & Jukka is THE best lineup Nightwish has ever presented, especially on stage. Keep the faith Jukka and rock on!

Jukka, if you read these comments, I was sad to hear this news. You are an amazingly talented musician who is just amazing to watch and listen to. Insomnia so sucks and I have bouts of it due in part to shift work and an inability to just shut my brain off. It affects so much of your health and well being and I can`t imagine how you have managed it so well. I agree that this is the right decision for you and the music. As fans of Nightwish and you as a musician and a person, we all want you to find healing and beat this thing so that you can return as strong as ever! Glad you are still going to be an integral part of the band and please post updates here to let the fans know how the battle is going.
Jukka, may you find rest. I know your heart is heavy, and all of us that adore Nightwish as a band, also adore each of you, and want nothing more than you to have your health back. I will say, both as HUGE fan of Nightwish and as someone who has been (and still is) suffering from chronic insomnia for years and still ignorant to the cause--I am deeply grateful that you have come to this decision. From the rage, the physical agony, and the sense of total despair, I know that nothing is more important than getting better. Please keep a positive attitude and be well.
Actually chances are that you've just named the cause. "Sense of total despair", read as - emotional trauma. This is, in my case (someone diagnosed with Complex PTSD) both the cause AND the result. I suffer from insomnia since 2005. It's 2023 now. So...yeah. Behind the insomnia lies fear. It's not of fear of sleeping, but the fear of waking up, and precisely: a fear that new days will force us to face some suffering we don't know how to deal it. I don't know if it's going to help you, but maybe something happened to you in past, and you had no capacity to process it emotionally. Ask youself when your insomnia started and what happened in your life in that year. Maybe someone dear to you died? Maybe someone abused you emotionally, betrayed, ridiculed to the core. Maybe it's mobbing at work? Something made you being hyper vigilant physically. I was raised to be a "tough woman", but this was as in not who I am. I was unable to handle things emotionally as others expected me to do. And then SHTF. That's how I discovered the reasons behind my insomnia. And I am still an insomniac because some of those reasons behind my insomnia are still present in my life, so to speak, and I can't do ANYTHING about it.
Once you know what causes your insomnia, life will become easier. It's not you. You do nothing wrong. Keep going, have faith in yourself, life will be good again! I wish you best of luck and good health!
Insomnia is not a fun thing at all. I know from personal experience.

Long time fan of the band. Drove 600 miles to see you in Kansas City, MO. Love the music and love the friendships there. I always love seeing you all live because you are always having fun up on stage. Jukka, you will be missed. Do what you got to do and return as soon as you can! It's already been this long since Jukka left, but I still miss him and he's my favorite drummer of all time, and I LOVE a lot of drummers. I hope you're doing better these days and I will always appreciate the work you've done.
I asked Tuomas how Jukka was doing when I met the band earlier this month. Tuomas said that Jukka is doing "much better", so hopefully he'll be well enough to come back for the next NW album

@@kubdar8346 same here....I cut my NW teeth on the Wacken 2013 live show, love watching how he uses his whole body as he plays. Sadly it is now official that he Kai is the new drummer. Nothing against Kai but I'd have loved to watch NW with Jukka on drums. Be well Jukka.
I have no problems at all with Kai staying the official drummer. Sure I was sad when I first found out about Jukka's decision, but it's as the band said: health is more important. If Jukka feels better by staying in the background, he should do that. Kai has proven to be a worthy replacement in my opinion.
He is still behind the scene and does managing stuff etc. so I think it feels better that he is still in the band.
I can totally relate to his situation as I'm a drummer that have to force myself out due to my spinal condition

I am new to Nightwish...as I discovered the band in 2020....when the first lock downs occurred in Feb. here in Texas! I loved watching Jukka play...not only because he is one heck of a great musician, but he's an entertainer!
I am not unfamiliar with insomnia.... As I have problems sleeping from severe tinnitus, severe Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis... And severe obstructive Sleep Apnea. I get so sleep deprived that I hallucinate occasionally. I have a Bipap machine to help me breathe when I do manage to sleep!
I hope and pray that the doctors find a remedy for your insomnia Jukka!

You continue to inspire my young son's drumming & I was so amazed that you would go out of your way at Manchester to get him one of your drum sticks.
I came back to this video so many times by now as I always give the link to Nightwish reactors so they get informed why there was a drummer change, and although I've seen it so many times by now I always watch it again from start to finish. Jukka, you probably won't remember this but I'll never forget how you and rest of the guys talked with me and my friend in front of the tour bus that brutally cold night in Munich after World Tour of the Century concert on 12.1.2003. You even thanked me for driving 1000km from Croatia to Munich in that polar cold weather to see Nightwish :) We met again next year, also in Munich at the tour bus after the Once Upon a Tour concert on 23.10.2004. and I even caught your drumstick at the end of that concert, and that drumstick is still right in front of me on the wall of my room :) Then I gave you the pics we took year before. Just want to tell you these are a lifetime memories that I'm so glad to have, we OG Nightwish fans miss you very much, but it is great to hear you are doing well these days and thanks for the memories!

Gosh, this is so sad, I hope he gets well soon. It's amazing that he's been going at it despite the insomnia for so many years. It shows his love and dedication and they really are a band of brothers. Like a family.

Insomnia is terrible. I have suffered insomnia for the past 2 years, but not the total insomnia, as Jukka suffering. I can not imagine that feeling, I mean, no sleep at all, it sounds really frustrating and exhausting. Best wishes, We understand as Your fans, the clever decision that you made, you couldn't do it in a better way. Get well very soon, You have all our support!.

This is very sad to hear. For me Jukka is my favourite nightwish member and all time favourite drummer. He taught me quite a few things as a drummer tbh. Can't even imagine how the rest of the band must feel right now. Specially Emppu since they are childhood friends. Get better soon man! May the gods of metal be with you!

Jukka is an incredibly cool guy and amazing drummer. It was a pleasure to talk to him several times as I followed the band around the west coast of the states a few years ago. I hope he gets healthy and back to the band soon. I'll certainly miss seeing him when they come back next year.

Jukka will not be gone for long; I believe this. He is the very first hero I ever had, when I was seven y/o and started listening to Nightwish. After 14 years now, I know how tough in the fall and what a hard worker he is. Can't help feeling sad and so disappointed that Jukka won't be playing in Nightwish anymore. Don't take me wrong, I understand the reasons and health comes always first, but I just waited him to come back so much. We all gonna face a difficult path but its important to never give up on your dream. Tuomas got a dream and his wish shall come true. All of the singer's dream shall come true. Never give up and keep fighting. Keep being strong. Nightwish is strong there no doubt. I been a loyal nightwish fan since I was 3 years old. And will always support my all time favorite band in the whole world! I can call Nightwish one of the god of metal. There wont be any band that can compare to Nightwish and will stay alive forever.

Do not despair, everyone. Every band goes through troubles every once in a while, but it is always those that can move through even the worst of time that are the greatest. Nightwish is one of these bands. Nightwish will prevail.

I know only too well what Jukka is suffering with and I can't even comprehend what that would be like on the road because suffering from this you feel awful all the time, you can't enjoy a thing you do, and the more you go without sleep, the more resistant this illness makes you FOR sleep....We Luv ya Jukka.....Hope you are doing better!

Bad news: it could be months or years before he returns to Nightwish. Tuomas said he "needs a long breather."
Good news: "he is doing much better" is what Tuomas said in a recent interview and he's still very productive with the band. In the booklet for the new album, Jukka still gets credit. :)

He's making the right decision. They have an incredible temporary replacement drummer who can be as energetic as Jukka is on the set, and in ANYTHING you do, health is always #1. Having dealt with medical grade insomnia through my 20's, it is no joke. There were days I was so tired I was hallucinating and couldn't even lift a pencil off the desk. That Jukka has been drumming through this all is nothing short of, as Floor said, "Superhuman Jukka."
Take all the time you need, Jukka. We, your fans, will be here when you come back :)

Poor Jukka. I sympathize with his problem. Insomnia is such a debilitating and self-feeding disorder, which I have suffered from for decades. He looks so tired and stressed. May he heal and recover from the anxiety and sadness this decision must have caused him. His arms of steel will be greatly missed until he returns to Nightwish.

Oh, Jukka... ;__; Every time I see them live, I can always feel how deeply Jukka feels and LOVES the music they make. It's truly heartbreaking that he'll have to sit out of the upcoming album and tour, because I can get a sense of how much Nightwish means to him. But I'm glad he's focusing on recovering his health--I really hope they can figure out what the cause of his insomnia is and heal it soon.

Watching this after more than 4 years, I'm tearing up that Juka is still not back.
It is. Even if you understand why. I hope he's okay though, even if he never comes back.
I start listening Nightwish some fourteen years ago, i been on several concerts, always in first rows, and to say that today when there is so many good bands, Nightwish is really special to me, their songs get to my heart and there is not day that i dont listen them, Each of them were heroes to me, because of Jukka i start with drums. Will the main singers come and goes, Jukka, Marco Thoumas and Emppu always remains, and now when Jukka was forced to step down due health issues(of course health always need to be on first place), it makes me very sad. I hope for best, i hope he will beat the damn insomnia(i know how nasty she can be), and that Jukka will return and continue the magic that Nightwish spread all around itself. Best wishes Jukka.

You have my full support Jukka! I've only suffered a few months of insomnia and it slowly got better for me. I know I'm lucky. But for about six months I wasn't myself. Take care!
