In this video, I discuss the issues that we run into when dealing with specialty polishes. I think its an important topic considering that more people are being introduced to complex application process in comparison to standard widely available polishes. Also, the importance of understanding the often unspoken aspects of marketing.

Only been around the nail community for a wee bit but it has become increasingly obvious that not all nail polishes are for all people. Some I know I’m not at all interested in (nail chromes), some I keep trying despite disappointments (magnetics) and some I always like (flakies because they are so forgiving of a nail peasant’s application). Appreciate your thorough review and commentary: honesty is much appreciated!

I'm a Holo Taco Loyalist but these were just too expensive given how finicky they are and how unlikely I am to wear them all the time, but I did want something similar for nail art. I got my the blue, purple, and pink metallic stamping polishes from Twinkled T instead (at $7 each plus more off with discount codes), and I'm really happy with them! That said, I still appreciated this review and always appreciate how honest you are!

Idk about y’all. But I love my chrome nail polish. I get complimented all the some because of the colors. I work and have to wash my hand all the time and it still stays at night.
Pretty colors, but this collection is a hard pass. It’s definitely apples to oranges to compare lacquer magnetics and metallics to their gel counterparts, but I’m not impressed with either of those formulas from HT as a lacquer user. There are just better options out there.
Your intro is perfection though! 🤣 I feel like your reviews are always fair, but I think this one is especially good as far as getting folks prepared for what they’re purchasing.
Thank you very much for watching! I try to make things digestible. There’s a lot of “fomo” (there’s even a whole polish brand the revolves around the concept) marketing and culture in the nail polish world that can bleed into the average nail polish user world. The average user doesn’t always have the means to be purchasing 5-6 polishes every month.
@@ruby_on_nails FOMO is huge in the polish world, and it’s definitely gotten me on multiple occasions. I loved that you encouraged doing research on this collection. I’m sure that a lot of people will absolutely love it, but I also think it has a higher than usual chance of being disappointing. I do love the HT boxes though, and this one is perfect for the collection.
I actually compared the silver with every other silver/chrome polish I have and…pretty similar, actually 😂 the only difference is that it’s easy to get one coat coverage compared to Sally Hansen. But if you want something similar for just a day, two coats of Sally (available at Walmart or Ulta) will do the trick.
That being said, I used it for a goth rainbow manicure over black and it was so gorgeous.
Honestly, I think I've bought every other Holo Taco release but I skipped this one. "easy to overwork" "not long lasting" "top coat discouraged" - to me, that makes me feel like its a bad formula and needed more work. :/ i hate any polish that has stipulations with it that aren't immediately clear. "Oh this is super textured, this might need more than one top coat" is one thing, but all three negatives are things that you'd only discover through actual use, and fixing it requires redoing the manicure.
I love sending my boyfriend to my nail polish shelf and having him pick colors for me. This might be the only one I'd have to say, "Okay but the thing about that one is..."
I agree. The only positive is the one coat claim but you can even do that wrong. It’s just not worth it to me when Even the creator has said they are best for a one day special occasion manicure
Yes, the barriers for use are hard to swallow which is why I felt the need to really go over them. Something I forgot to mention in the video is that many of these stipulations exclude people with mobility issues that might need more time to work with the formula.
@@ruby_on_nails they probably think they did a good deed by being up front about the downsides which isn’t untrue; they probably retained more customers that way than if they hadn’t. However nothing was wrong with a delaying the launch in favor of developing a better formula
I can’t figure out why HT makes so many silver and yellow nail polishes. I get that it’s something you think of for a chrome polish, but wouldn’t it have been better to make two more chromes that are way more liked? It just strikes me as odd that these colors are always lowest selling but HT keeps making them. I only have circuit breaker and I wore it once… it just isn’t a very flattering color. And people have noticed the “gold” polishes are not warm as a gold probably should be. I started wearing HT when electric holos and then the remix collection were released, which was an epic era imo. Can’t forget existential crisis.
Honestly the kind of pale gold is surprisingly flattering on many skintones. It’s pretty much the only color I am debating on buying from this chrome collection. I love lemon spritzer so much, kind of a weird cold yellow color that I bought with some scepticism, but in the end it looked so much better than silver on me, surprisingly ”neutral” as a color, seemed to go with all my outfits even though I don’t wear much yellow, linear holo coming through beautifully, and it became a favorite of mine. Similarily frozen benanas is amazing and I have gotten so many complements on it. I feel like sometimes people are just scared to even try them, and they’re left on the shelf :/ I appreaciate that Holo Taco does colors that are not mainstream (namely yellows, greens and blues), and ofc with all the rainbow collections at least you kind of have to have a yellow for nail art people that buy the bundles (I think bundle sales weren’t even included in the yearly sales ranking that she did).
They're metallics. Chrome powders would probably be the way to go for super shiny mirror-like surfaces. Or a metallic holo. That silver you're wearing looks good, but I prefer glitters or something for my shiny moments.
Thanks for the insights! I have the collection but have not played with it yet. Metal and chrome are expected to be popular fashion this spring season so the collection finish and colors are well-timed. I don't mind working with a short-lived fussy polish, it looks like these will be fun for a nail art or blob-mani.
The blob manis I've seen have been fantastic! I think a lot of people will have fun playing around with these formulas and I hope you're one of those people
I feel you on the box for barista, and as collectors we need that 😩. I got this collection and it does bubble once coated. A dark blue would’ve been nice color. Btw I appreciate the different base coats and the difference you can see
I can just see a beautiful brown holographic gradient on the box or something with coffee beans.

I purchased a chrome powder that I learned to apply over a black polish. What's up Nails has powders and videos. It had a really cool effect. It's a lot of work tho and very messy, so polsih seems easier.

I own a Morgan Taylor silver chrome and I think it’s both really cool and finicky at the same time… I don’t mind them highlighting nail imperfections because they make my nails look like swords in rpg worlds that have gone through a lot of battles. However I find foils to be more easygoing application wise.
Oh jeeze, foils are my latest enemy lol. I strive to be more like you!
I really enjoyed this collection its kinda funny to see how divisive chrome is in the nail polish world lol. I really hope we see neons in this finish i want my eyes to buuuurn.

Late to this video! I normally love holo taco but this release was underwhelming. The colors look awesome and surprisingly the "chrome" effect lasts longer than the 1 day. I noticed there were bubbles that created quick and it chipped so so easily (for this price point i was disappointed). Also when I removed the blue shade my fingers all stained blue and it was difficult to remove. I reached out and was offered a return slip. 😶
I love your videos! Although I am a HT fan, I’m not a chrome fan, so I skipped this collection. I’ll prolly skip the upcoming pastel cremes, as I love bling with my polishes. I found your review super interesting, so thank you!

I'm the same I wanted a BOX with the Barista!
I got the chromes and they’re just bubble city for me. I was excited because the photos, but they work terrible for me and its a little disappointing. I cant help but think i like the holo barista collection more and wish that had been the boxed collection. So far im just a lil disappointed with the chromes. Oh well.

At 5:34, but Smoothing Base made Quick Dry Base so weird for me lol. Anyway, (not sure what you'll say yet but) when I first applied with one coat, my nails looked so awful I about died. A few days later I tried again with Quick Dry Base and two coats and yeah. That fixed it. No more dents. My lines were prettier. It looked like the pictures for two days.
Made me seriously wonder what the heck the obsession with a one-coat formula was.
I think her previous videos provide some insight on why the Chrome collection is marketed as one coat, so that could be a place to start :)
Idk if anyone remembers OPI's Push and Shove.. it came with a mini bottle of special base coat. It was this same type of deal. No top coat.. the top coat took away the chrome look. I wore it once or twice.. it lasted maybe a few hours on the nail.

I haven't tried mine yet. I am worried about the longevity. I only to my nails once a week and need to plan if it doesn't last more than a couple of days. What did you find (assuming you had a chance to wear it for longer than just to swatch).
I think that if you apply a topcoat, you'll be okay for a week with minimal chipping.
I feel like I’ve been I am officially done with ht. The last four purchases have included unusable product. Unmixable linear holo from the holoday collection, new duct tape grey was like clay and water, would not combine even with thinner. The early things I have, ocb, tea, unicorn skins, and sparkling water are all great but anything I’ve bought in the past year - year and a half is awful

I do not like chrome as a finish but I am interested in specialty polishes and experimenting. Buying 1 isnt really worth it but the whole collection is so pricy as well 😂 do you see my problem
Totally understand the dilemma! If you have one of the basecoats Kelli Marissa suggested and need to make free shipping on a Holotaco order, it might be worth trying one color that way. Ultimately if you’re not a fan of chromes, skip it! There will always be more unique formulas in the future and you have time to change your mind 😊
Don't like the chrome effect. So I didn't buy those, which is fantastic for my debit card.

@@ruby_on_nails Indeed, because often Holo Taco makes it bleed. I love Holo Taco, but it's pricey, so I try to limit my orders to stuff I really want instead of ordering everything just because it's from Simply. But I'd rather support a young female entrepreneur like Simply than Essie, which is owned by L'Oreal, which is partially owned by Nestlé. I want to avoid Nestlé, so I try to cut back on Essies
Bought the collection exclusively because I love the box; I don't get all the boxes, just the ones I love. Unlikely to ever use the polishes because I have the world's ridgiest nails
